    And we thought that it was unbelievable and shocking when figure reached 3,000. It’s seems we’re not shocked anymore. Try to imagine 4,000 children in front of you now, at least a third of whom are under the age of four.

    Wrap up of by chair highlighting the importance of striving for equality & social justice. Need to take a lifecycle approach to inequality. Rightly makes the point that more needs to b done for lone parents who live in persistent poverty.

    He points to the fact that we know that lone parents and the children of lone parents (as evidenced in research) are less likely to move out of poverty. Poverty is feminised and this needs to be addressed

    Alan Barrett highlights the discussion at around equality and social justice linking the economic with the social. While tax and social welfare systems do well in terms of redistribution, this is a short-term view. We need to think about equality in a life-cycle way

    Afternoon session at discussing how childcare can deliver quality environments for children, affordability for parents and good pay and conditions for staff. A long term view of the economic and social benefits of a pubically funded sustainable model of childcare needed.
