Welcome to our series of Indian States and Union Territories.
Today we will explore the little france of India - Puducherry.
Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry, is one of the 8 union territories of India. #Puducherry was formed out of four territories of former French India, namely Pondichéry, Karikal, Mahé and Yanaon, excluding Chandernagore. It is named after the largest district, Puducherry.
French used to call it Pondicherry which means a new city or a new colony. It was known as #Pondicherry and renamed as Puducherry in September, 2006.
The Union Territory of Puducherry consists of four small unconnected districts: Puducherry district (293 km2), Karaikal district (161 km2) and Yanam district (20 km2) on the Bay of Bengal and Mahé district (9 km2) on the Laccadive Sea, covering a total area of 492 km2. Puducherry and Karaikal have the largest areas and population, and are both enclaves of Tamil Nadu. Yanam and Mahé are enclaves of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, respectively. Its population, as per the 2011 Census is approximately 13Lakhs.
We can reach Puducherry via flight or by train. It has an airport called Puducherry airport (Code - PNY). If there is no flight to Puducherry from your location then second nearest airport it Chennai airport which is 135km from Puducherry. If you want to come via train then it has Puducherry railway staion (Code - PDY).
Best time to visit Puducherry is between October to March when temperature in low otherwise in summer season temperature crosses to 40 degree.

Pondicherry, officially known as Puducherry, and commonly referred to as just Pondy, is a beautiful Union Territory of India. This former French colony is a perfect amalgamation of the traditional Indian sensibilities and French architecture, making it a dreamy escape that offers the best of both worlds. It is a heaven for beach lovers.
How to reach,
By Bus
There are several buses that ply frequently from Chennai, Thanjaur, Trichy, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Hyderabad to Pondicherry. Both private and state-owned buses are available. The bus fare will depend upon the distance covered.
By Train
The nearest rail station is Pondicherry . The rail head is well-connected to cities like New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Trivandrum.
By Air
The airport at Pondicherry can accommodate landing of a small aircraft only and has flights coming in from Bangalore and Hyderabad. However, you can get a connecting flight if you are coming from Delhi, Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Chennai is the second nearest domestic as well as international airport which is approximately 135 kilometres away from Pondicherry.

Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry (/ˌpɒndᵻˈtʃɛri/;literally New Town in Tamil) is a Union Territory of India. It was formed out of four exclaves of former French India namely Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe. It is named after the largest district Puducherry. Historically known as Pondicherry (Pāṇṭiccēri), the territory changed its official name to Puducherry (Putuccēri) on 20 September 2006.
Puducherry lies in the southern part of the Indian Peninsula. The areas of Puducherry and Karaikal are bound by the state of Tamil Nadu, Yanam and Mahe are enclosed by the states of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala respectively. Puducherry is the 29th most populous and the third most densely populated state/UT in India. It has a GDP of ₹0.21 lakh crore (US$3.1 billion) and ranks 27th in India.
History
The earliest recorded history of Puducherry can be traced to the 2nd century CE. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea mentions a marketplace named Poduke (ch 60). G. W. B. Huntingford identified suggested this might be a site about 2 miles from the modern Puducherry, which was possibly the location of Arikamedu (now part of Ariyankuppam). Huntingford noted that Roman pottery was found at Arikamedu in 1937. In addition, archaeological excavations between 1944 and 1949 showed that it was "a trading station to which goods of Roman manufacture were imported during the first half of the 1st century CE".

Pondicherry
Pondicherry (/pɒndᵻˈtʃɛri/ or /pɒndᵻˈʃɛri/) or Puducherry is a city, an urban agglomeration and a municipality in Puducherry district in the Indian union territory of Puducherry. It is affectionately known as Pondy, and has been officially known by the alternative name Puducherry since 2006. Pondicherry is the regional capital and largest city in the territory.
History
The history of the City of Pondicherry is recorded only after the arrival of Dutch, Portuguese, British and French colonialists. By contrast, nearby places such as Arikamedu, Ariyankuppam, Kakayanthoppe, Villianur and Bahur, which were annexed by the French East India Company over a period of time and which became the Union Territory of Pondicherry after Independence, have recorded history predating the colonial period.
A marketplace named Poduke or Poduca is recorded as a Roman trading destination from the mid 1st century. The area was part of the Pallava Kingdom of Kanchipuram in the 4th century. The Cholas of Thanjavur held it from the 10th to 13th centuries, only to be replaced by the Pandya Kingdom in the 13th century. The Vijayanagar Empire took control of almost all the South of India in the 14th century and maintained control until 1638 when they were supplanted by the Sultan of Bijapur. The French acquired Puducherry in 1674 and held it, with an occasional interruption by the British or Dutch, until 1954 (de jure 1956), when it was incorporated into the Indian Union along with the rest of French India.

Welcome to our series of Indian States and Union Territories.
Today we will explore the little france of India - Puducherry.
Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry, is one of the 8 union territories of India. #Puducherry was formed out of four territories of former French India, namely Pondichéry, Karikal, Mahé and Yanaon, excluding Chandernagore. It is named after the largest district, Puducherry.
French used to call it Pondicherry which means a new city or a new colony. It was known as #Pondicherry and renamed as Puducherry in September, 2006.
The Union Territory of Puducherry consists of four small unconnected districts: Puducherry district (293 km2), Karaikal district (161 km2) and Yanam district (20 km2) on the Bay of Bengal and Mahé district (9 km2) on the Laccadive Sea, covering a total area of 492 km2. Puducherry and Karaikal have the largest areas and population, and are both enclaves of Tamil Nadu. Yanam and Mahé are enclaves of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, respectively. Its population, as per the 2011 Census is approximately 13Lakhs.
We can reach Puducherry via flight or by train. It has an airport called Puducherry airport (Code - PNY). If there is no flight to Puducherry from your location then second nearest airport it Chennai airport which is 135km from Puducherry. If you want to come via train then it has Puducherry railway staion (Code - PDY).
Best time to visit Puducherry is between October to March when temperature in low otherwise in summer season temperature crosses to 40 degree.

Pondicherry, officially known as Puducherry, and commonly referred to as just Pondy, is a beautiful Union Territory of India. This former French colony is a perfect amalgamation of the traditional Indian sensibilities and French architecture, making it a dreamy escape that offers the best of both worlds. It is a heaven for beach lovers.
How to reach,
By Bus
There are several buses that ply frequently from Chennai, Thanjaur, Trichy, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Hyderabad to Pondicherry. Both private and state-owned buses are available. The bus fare will depend upon the distance covered.
By Train
The nearest rail station is Pondicherry . The rail head is well-connected to cities like New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Trivandrum.
By Air
The airport at Pondicherry can accommodate landing of a small aircraft only and has flights coming in from Bangalore and Hyderabad. However, you can get a connecting flight if you are coming from Delhi, Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Chennai is the second nearest domestic as well as international airport which is approximately 135 kilometres away from Pondicherry.

Welcome to our series of Indian States and Union Territories.
Today we will explore the little france of India - Puducherry.
Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry, is one of the 8 union territories of India. #Puducherry was formed out of four territories of former French India, namely Pondichéry, Karikal, Mahé and Yanaon, excluding Chandernagore. It is named after the largest district, Puducherry.
French used to call it Pondicherry which means a new city or a new colony. It was known as #Pondicherry and renamed as Puducherry in September, 2006.
The Union Territory of Puducherry consists of four small unconnected districts: Puducherry district (293 km2), Karaikal district (161 km2) and Yanam district (20 km2) on the Bay of Bengal and Mahé district (9 km2) on the Laccadive Sea, covering a total area of 492 km2. Puducherry and Karaikal have the largest areas and population, and are both enclaves of Tamil Nadu. Yanam and Mahé are enclaves of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, respectively. Its population, as per the 2011 Census is approximately 13Lakhs.
We can reach Puducherry via flight or by train. It has an airport called Puducherry airport (Code - PNY). If there is no flight to Puducherry from your location then second nearest airport it Chennai airport which is 135km from Puducherry. If you want to come via train then it has Puducherry railway staion (Code - PDY).
Best time to visit Puducherry is between October to March when temperature in low otherwise in summer season temperature crosses to 40 degree.

Pondicherry, officially known as Puducherry, and commonly referred to as just Pondy, is a beautiful Union Territory of India. This former French colony is a perfect amalgamation of the traditional Indian sensibilities and French architecture, making it a dreamy escape that offers the best of both worlds. How to reach,
By Bus
There are several buses that ply frequently from Chennai, Thanjaur, Trichy, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Hyderabad to Pondicherry. Both private and state-owned buses are available. The bus fare will depend upon the distance covered.
By Train
The nearest rail station is Pondicherry . The rail head is well-connected to cities like New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Trivandrum.
By Air
The airport at Pondicherry can accommodate landing of a small aircraft only and has flights coming in from Bangalore and Hyderabad. However, you can get a connecting flight if you are coming from Delhi, Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Chennai is the second nearest domestic as well as international airport which is approximately 135 kilometres away from Pondicherry.

Puducherry
Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry (/ˌpɒndᵻˈtʃɛri/;literally New Town in Tamil) is a Union Territory of India. It was formed out of four exclaves of former French India namely Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam and Mahe. It is named after the largest district Puducherry. Historically known as Pondicherry (Pāṇṭiccēri), the territory changed its official name to Puducherry (Putuccēri) on 20 September 2006.
Puducherry lies in the southern part of the Indian Peninsula. The areas of Puducherry and Karaikal are bound by the state of Tamil Nadu, Yanam and Mahe are enclosed by the states of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala respectively. Puducherry is the 29th most populous and the third most densely populated state/UT in India. It has a GDP of ₹0.21 lakh crore (US$3.1 billion) and ranks 27th in India.
History
The earliest recorded history of Puducherry can be traced to the 2nd century CE. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea mentions a marketplace named Poduke (ch 60). G. W. B. Huntingford identified suggested this might be a site about 2 miles from the modern Puducherry, which was possibly the location of Arikamedu (now part of Ariyankuppam). Huntingford noted that Roman pottery was found at Arikamedu in 1937. In addition, archaeological excavations between 1944 and 1949 showed that it was "a trading station to which goods of Roman manufacture were imported during the first half of the 1st century CE".
