Today we signed the Australian Government's new target to cut emissions by 43% by 2030. Our target has the support of big business, unions, and environmental groups who came together in Parliament House for the signing.

Our first Cabinet meeting in regional Australia took place today in Gladstone, Queensland. We spoke with hundreds of locals about their concerns and hopes for the future. We will govern for the whole country.

We can be a renewable energy superpower, and here at the Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone, they’re investing in renewables to power their operations. This will lower costs and make them more efficient.

In an Australian first, it will have a childcare centre and kindergarten right next door when it opens in August. This will create inter-generational connections that benefit both our oldest and our youngest Australians.

What does that mean for Australian households and businesses? Short term, our plan will allow the energy market operator to maintain a gas reserve for times of severe shortages. That means we can smooth out the drops in energy supply that can often contribute to higher prices.
