On the Jan. 9, 2021 episode of her Newsmax show, Sovereign Nation, far-right pundit Michelle Malkin interviewed white nationalist Scott Greer about the insurrection at the Capitol last Wednesday. In 2018 Greer stepped down as deputy-editor of The Daily Caller when it was revealed that he had written for Richard Spencer’s white supremacist publication Radix Journal.

Both Greer and Malkin are key figureheads in the racist and antisemitic “groyper” movement, and last year both gave speeches to the America First Political Action Conference — a gathering of right-wing extremists.

In response to a video clip of Rep. Cori Bush, who said that the response of law enforcement would have been harsher had the Capitol Hill rioters been Black, Greer cited the nationwide protests against police brutality last summer. Greer characterized those protests as “Black Lives Matter rioters and antifa invad[ing] federal buildings,” and said “nothing happened to them.”

In actuality, as reported by The Washington Post, in the first two weeks of protests over the murder of George Floyd, police “arrested more than 17,000 people in the 50 largest cities that had organized protests.” On June 1, 2020, peaceful protesters were forcibly cleared out of D.C.’s Lafayette Square. 326 people in total were arrested June 1, compared to 61 on Jan. 6.

Greer also claimed that people are “celebrat[ing]” the death of Ashli Babbitt — a QAnon supporter was shot while trying to break into the Speaker’s Lobby alongside an angry mob — “because of her political beliefs.”

“The bloodthirst they have over this young woman’s death is just appalling,” Greer said. “You would’ve never seen anything like this for an armed criminal who is shot by police and then they turn him into a martyr. A latter-day saint even. And yet we all have to pretend that what happened there is the most horrifying thing we’ve ever seen.”

Michelle Malkin asked Greer about comparisons between the 9/11 attacks and the terrorist attack on the Capitol. Greer called such comparisons “ridiculous,” but then compared what occurred at the Capitol to peaceful protests against the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh in 2018 and against Scott Walker’s anti-union policies in 2011.

These comparisons fall flat, however.

Police made hundreds of arrests during both the anti-Walker and anti-Kavanaugh protests, there was no significant property damage, and no deaths either. Angry mobs weren’t looking to kidnap or murder lawmakers, unlike the participants in the Capitol Hill insurrection. And the goal of the pro-Trump mob was to overturn a free and fair election.
