Warrensville Heights students receive bicycle helmets from Amazon
On Thursday, students at Warrensville Heights Elementary School were rewarded with hundreds of bicycle helmets from Amazon.
"They have 900 kids in this school and they're all getting one today," says Jennifer Walker from University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital injury prevention. "And we don't want to just give them a helmet so we measure them, we fit them, we adjust the straps, we show the kids how to wear them properly."
You see helmets are a passion project, one that's top of mind for the Safe Kids Greater Cleveland Coalition and University Hospitals (UH).
"It's not always easy to get kids to wear their helmet," adds Walker. "They either don't want to or they don't like it, so getting them excited is half the battle."

Warrensville Heights man charged with OVI after hitting Cleveland firefighter on his motorcycle
A Warrensville Heights man has been charged with OVI and aggravated vehicular assault after allegedly striking a Cleveland firefighter on his motorcycle on Friday night.
According to the Oakwood Village Police Department, officers were informed of a motor vehicle accident between an SUV and a motorcycle at the intersection of 270 North and Forbes Rd. at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, officers found what appeared to be a serious accident and a man laying in the road face down in blood.
A man, later identified as Ali Akram of Warrensville Heights, was standing over the man and told officers that he was the driver of the vehicle that collided with the motorcycle. Officers observed a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech from Akram.

On Thursday, students at Warrensville Heights Elementary School were rewarded with hundreds of bicycle helmets from Amazon.
"They have 900 kids in this school and they're all getting one today," says Jennifer Walker from University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital injury prevention. "And we don't want to just give them a helmet so we measure them, we fit them, we adjust the straps, we show the kids how to wear them properly."
You see helmets are a passion project, one that's top of mind for the Safe Kids Greater Cleveland Coalition and University Hospitals (UH).
"It's not always easy to get kids to wear their helmet," adds Walker. "They either don't want to or they don't like it, so getting them excited is half the battle."
UH says one of the leading causes of child injuries they often see in their trauma center are falls and head injuries. There are more than 2,500 students in Cuyahoga County, with 80% from underserved communities.

A Warrensville Heights man has been charged with OVI and aggravated vehicular assault after allegedly striking a Cleveland firefighter on his motorcycle on Friday night.
According to the Oakwood Village Police Department, officers were informed of a motor vehicle accident between an SUV and a motorcycle at the intersection of 270 North and Forbes Rd. at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival, officers found what appeared to be a serious accident and a man laying in the road face down in blood.
A man, later identified as Ali Akram of Warrensville Heights, was standing over the man and told officers that he was the driver of the vehicle that collided with the motorcycle. Officers observed a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech from Akram.
The man on the ground, later identified as Ghadi Cole, an Oakwood and Cleveland Firefighter of Macedonia, was transported to Metro Hospital for his injuries. He suffered a skull fracture and currently has no feeling in his legs.
Akram admitted to officers that he had "a couple of drinks" approximately five hours earlier. Officers proceeded to put Akram through three field sobriety tests, which he had difficulty with.
