The Leeds, England post punk band originally started out as a three piece, all girl band, but they went through numerous lineup changes that were not limited to the female gender. Due to the changes in lineup and the weak album sales, the band called it quits by the time 1981 ended with five singles and one album to their credit. In July of 1981, Devo released their first live offering. It was a six song EP called DEV-O Live which was recorded live in August of 1980. The tracks were "Freedom Of Choice Theme Song", "Whip It", "Girl U Want", "Gates Of Steel", "Be Stiff" and "Planet Earth". When re-released on CD, it became a full-length, 22 song offering, which includes the original six songs and then the same six songs repeated again plus 10 added songs. The Akron, Ohio punk/new wave band went on hiatus in the early 90's as the band members were involved in separate projects. They resumed recording and performing in 1996.

The B side also appeared on their self-titled debut album. Both tracks also appeared on their U.S. album debut, No Escape. The London punk band was one of the earliest punk bands on the scene but went through some dramatic personnel changes early on that set their recordings back. The original lineup featured Gene October as the lead singer and three bandmates who would leave in a couple of weeks after forming to form another band. Those departing were Billy Idol, Tony James and John Towe. That band would be Generation X. Gene October was left to recruit a new band which he did. That new band included James Stevenson. Predictably, he would later leave to join Generation X too. Chelsea is still performing and Gene October is still there.

On this date in 1982, Felt released their third single, "My Face Is On Fire". It was backed by "Trails Of Color Dissolve". Neither track appeared on a full length album but both were included on the 1984 EP, My Face Is On Fire. The Birmingham, England post-punk band split in 1989 but not before producing ten albums.

On this date in 1981, R.E.M. released their debut single, "Radio Free Europe". It was backed by "Sitting Still". Both songs appeared on their album debut, Murmur, in 1983, but "Radio Free Europe" was a re-recorded version. The single did not chart the first time around but reached the #78 spot in the U.S. when re-released in 1983. The Athens, Georgia power pop band became a huge mainstream rock act in the mid-80's. On this date in 1981, U2 released their sixth single, "Fire". It was backed by "J. Swallow". The A side appeared on their second album, October. The B side was a non-LP track that was added as a bonus to a later CD re-release. The single reached the #35 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Dublin, Ireland new wave band, of course, became a hugely successful mainstream rock act by the mid-'80's.
