X - Under The Big Black Sun

On this date in 1982, X released their third album, Under The Big Black Sun. It contained the song "The Hungry Wolf" which received some rotation on MTV and brought the band some attention to the mainstream. The Los Angeles band was appreciated much quicker in the U.S. where the album reached the #76 spot on the U.S. albums chart but did not chart in the U.K. The Los Angeles punk band disbanded in 1993 but has performed as a group occasionally since.

Alternative TV - Strange Kicks

On this date in 1981, Alternative TV released their fourth album, Strange Kicks. It contained the singles, "Communicate" and "The Ancient Rebels". The punk/post-punk London band led by Mark Perry, founder of Sniffin' Glue magazine, had originally disbanded in 1979 and has re-formed on and off ever since.

Family Fodder - Film Music

On this date in 1981, Family Fodder released their fifth single, "Film Music. It was backed by "Room". Neither track appeared on an album. The London post punk band was a collective of ever-changing musicians (there were fifteen "band members" on their debut album). They disbanded in 1983 after two albums but have re-formed periodically to record new music.

Virgin Prunes - Moments And Mine (Despite Straight Lines)

In June of 1981, Virgin Prunes released their second single, "Moments And Mine (Despite Straight Lines)". The B sides were "In The Greylight" and "War". None of these three songs made an album, but all were included in the 1993 compilation, Artfuck. Virgin Prunes was a Dublin-based goth band whose members were childhood friends of Bono and The Edge from U2. They disbanded in 1986.

On this date in 1980, The Prefects' first and only single was released. The A side was "Going Through The Motions". The B side was "Things In General". Both were recorded during Peel Sessions in 1979 and 1978 respectively. The Birmingham, England punk band had already disbanded by the time this release and it was their only one until a later compilation. Robert Lloyd, Paul Apperley, Eamonn Duffy and Joe Crow went on to form post punk band The Nightingales.

Sex Pistols - No One Is Innocent

On this date in 1978, Sex Pistols released their sixth single, "No One Is Innocent". It was backed by "My Way". Both songs appeared on the soundtrack to the movie, The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindle. The A side was recorded by Paul Cook and Steve Jones after the breakup of The Sex Pistols with vocals handled by convicted train robber Ronnie Biggs. The B side was sung by Sid Vicious. The single reached the #6 spot on the U.K. singles chart, clearly on the band's name alone. The London punk band really disbanded in 1978 when Johnny Rotten quit. There was still money to be made and Malcolm McLaren was not ready to let it die.

Buzzcocks - Love You More

Neither track appeared on a regular studio album but both appeared on their 1979 compilation, Singles Going Steady. The Manchester, England punk band disbanded in 1981 but re-formed in 1989. Of the original lineup, only Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle remain.

The bonus track appeared on their fifth album, Concrete. The other tracks did not but they were added as bonuses when it is was re-released on CD. The band broke up shortly thereafter only to re-form a few years later. The London punk band is still active and still fronted by Nick Cash.

A version of the A side appeared on their self-titled debut album, but it was a more danceable version on the single. The B side was a non-LP track. The single reached the #22 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The London new wave band disbanded in 1984 after three albums.

In June of 1980, Dome released their debut album, Dome 1. The London post punk band consisted of Graham Lewis and Bruce Gilbert, both of Wire. They released four albums between 1980 and 1984 without releasing a single. The side project ended when Wire re-formed in 1985.

Devo - Duty Now For The Future

On this date in 1979, Devo released their second full length album, Duty Now For The Future. It contained the singles, "Secret Agent Man" and "The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprize". The album reached the #49 spot on the U.K. albums chart and the #73 spot on the U.S. albums chart. The Akron, Ohio punk/new wave band went on hiatus in the early 90's as the band members were involved in separate projects. They renewed recording and performing in 1996.

On this date in 1982, Government Issue released their second EP, Make An Effort. It featured the songs, "Teenager In A Box", "No Way Out", "Twisted Views" and "Sheer Terror". Only the last track made it onto their debut album, Boycott Stab. The Washington, DC hardcore band once had Brian Baker of Minor Threat fame on guitar. He was the guitarist on this EP. Government Issue disbanded in 1989.

The Birthday Party - Mr. Clarinet

On this date in 1981, The Birthday Party re-released their debut single, "Mr. Clarinet". It was backed by "Happy Birthday". The single had been released in Australia in March, 1980. Both tracks appeared on their self-titled debut album. The band used to be known as The Boys Next Door. In fact, The Birthday Party's debut album was originally credited to The Boys Next Door. When re-released on CD, it was combined with the Hee Haw EP and re-titled Hee Haw. The Melbourne, Australia post-punk band, as The Birthday Party, called it quits in 1983 and frontman Nick Cave formed The Bad Seeds.

Discharge - Fight Back

In June of 1980, Discharge released their second EP, Fight Back. In addition to the title track, it contained "War's No Fairytale", "Always Restrictions", "You Take Part In Creating The System" and "Religion Instigates", all on a 7 inch record. They were one of the earlier English punk bands, having started recording demos in 1977, but they didn't distribute anything officially until 1980. The Staffordshire, England punk/hardcore band disbanded in 1987 but have performed since.

Duffo - Tower Of Madness

In March of 1979, Duffo released his second single, "Tower Of Madness". It was backed by "Duffo (I'm A Genius)". Both tracks appeared on his debut punk album, Duffo (he had released two albums in Australia). Originally from Australia, Jeff Duff ("Duffo") relocated to London, put together a band and started releasing punk records in his cross-dressing androgynous persona. The album, Duffo, was also released in March of 1979 and included, aside from "Give Me Back Me Brain", the single "Tower Of Madness". Most recently, he has been making music described as a cross between David Bowie and Frank Sinatra.

Plasmatics - Butcher Baby

On this date in 1980, Plasmatics re-released their debut single, "Butcher Baby". They originally released the single in 1979. This time, the B side was a live version of "Tight Black Pants". They also released a three song EP with "Butcher Baby" as the A side again. The B sides of the EP were live versions of "Living Dead" and "Sometimes I". "Butcher Baby" appeared on their first album, New Hope For The Wretched. All three live tracks issued in June of 1980 appeared as bonus tracks when this album was re-released on CD. The New York punk band turned to metal in the early '80's and disbanded in 1987.

The U.S. release had a different B side, "Let's Make This Precious". All but "Dubious", a non-LP track, made their second album, Too-Rye-Ay. "Dubious" was added as a bonus track when the album was re-released on CD. The single reached the #1 spot on both the U.S. and U.K. singles charts. The Birmingham, England new wave band disbanded in 1986. Lead singer Kevin Rowland and guitarist Al Adams were former members of punk band The Killjoys.

Husker Du - In A Free Land

The all-girl group released one album, The Story So Far, in 1980 but neither of these tracks made the album. The London post-punk band (not mod, which their name might imply) included two members not born in the U.K. Guitarist Kate Korus was born in the U.S. and lead vocalist Ramona Carlier was born in Switzerland. The all-girl band disbanded in 1982.

Liliput - Die Matrosen

The all girl Swiss punk band was formerly known as Kleenex but they changed their name under threat of lawsuit from the makers of Kleenex. They released released two singles and one EP under the name Kleenex before their name change. They called it quits in 1983.

On this date in 1979, Chelsea released their self-titled debut album. It contained the single, "I'm On Fire". The re-release on CD included demos of their third and fourth singles, "Urban Kids" and "No Escape" as bonus tracks. The London punk band was one of the earliest punk bands on the scene but went through some dramatic personnel changes early on that set their recordings back. The original lineup featured Gene October as the lead singer and three bandmates who would leave in a couple of weeks after forming to form another band. Those departing were Billy Idol, Tony James and John Towe. That band would be Generation X. Gene October was left to recruit a new band which he did. That new band included James Stevenson. Predictably, he would later leave to join Generation X too. Chelsea is still performing and Gene October is still there.

Culture Club - I'm Afraid Of Me

On this date in 1982, Culture Club released their second single, "I'm Afraid Of Me". The B side was "Murder Rap Trap". The A side appeared on their debut album, Kissing To Be Clever, though it was a re-mixed version. The B side was left off the vinyl but was added as a bonus track when the album was re-released on CD. The song would reach the #100 spot on the U.K. singles chart but that would be its peak. The next five U.K. releases would all reach at least the #3 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The London, England new wave band lasted until 1986. They re-formed in 1998 and the second union lasted four years.

On this date in 1982, Joe Jackson released his fifth album, Night And Day. It contained three singles, "Steppin' Out " (#6 U.S., #6 U.K.), "Breaking Us In Two" (#18 U.S., #59 U.K.), "A Slow Song" and "Real Men". The album, itself, reached the #3 spot in the U.K. and the #4 spot in the U.S. The Staffordshire, England punk/new wave musician still records.

Pigbag - The Big Bean

On this date in 1982, Pigabag released their fourth single, "The Big Bean". The B side was "Scumda". Both tracks were instrumentals. A 12 inch version of the A side appeared on their fourth album, Favourite Things, which was a compilation released in 1983. The B side was a non-LP track. The single reached the #40 spot on the U.K. singles chart. The Birmingham, England post-punk band disbanded in 1983 after five singles and three albums.
