It's 1559. King Henry II of France dies in a tragic accident. His 15 year old son, Francis II follows him on the throne, but he quickly falls under the influence of the Guise. The Guise were one of the most powerful families in france with a bunch of soldiers and they, were heavily, and militantly catholic, The Bourbons were also one of the most powerful families in france, with a bunch of soldiers, and the Valois were the ruling family led by Catherine de Medici that tried to keep the kingdom stable and balance themselves between these two warring families, but when that proved impossible, turned to violence like the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre.

It's 1562. After the Massacre at Vassy, war seems inevitable. Mobilization of the army is slow, as the French have to wait for the Swiss mercenaries, Landsknechts and Reiter cavalry to arrive. The Royalists finally begin their assault in July, quickly surrounding Orleans and capturing Rouen. By December they have the upper hand, until the Prince of Conde sallies out to attack Paris. The Duke of Guise and Montmorency rally their soldiers and later defeat the Protestants at the Battle of Dreux. But when the Catholics have almost won, Catherine of Medici ends the Firs...

It's 1576. In spite of the peace, France is still in the grips of violence. Two small wars break out when the King wants to grant the governorship of Picardy to Conde.
Major hostilities start when the Duke of Anjou dies. This leaves Henry of Navarre as the only legitimate heir, but the Catholic League, headed by Henry of Guise cannot allow this. The War of the Three Henrys breaks out in 1584. Navarre scores a victory over Joyouse at the Battle of Coutras, However Guise defeats his German allies at the Battles of Vimory and Auneau.
This leaves the Guise all powerful and the monarchy at its weakest point since the start of the war.

But when the Catholics have almost won, Catherine of Medici ends the First French War of Religion with the Edict of Amboise.

It's 1563. After the Edict of Amboise France settles into an uneasy peace. But after the conference of Bayonne the idea of a Catholic conspiracy starts gaining ground. The Second War of Religion begins with the Surprise of Meux. After blockading Paris and the Battle of Saint-Denis, the Huguenots are forced to retreat. But John Casimir comes to their aid from Germany, forcing Charles IX to conclude the Peace of Longjumeau.
The Third War of Religion starts with Alba's march along the Spanish Road and the execution of Egmont and Hoorn. The Catholics gain the upper hand after the battles at Jarnac and Moncontour, but after reinforcements from Wolfgang of Zweibrucken and the Army of Viscounts, the Protestants turn the table. The war concludes with the Treaty of Saint-Germaine.
