This is truly a historic day for human rights. Today, the Supreme Court issued an opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges, the case determining whether LGBT folks have a constitutional right to marry. In a 5-4 decision, authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy, the Court ruled that same-sex marriage is a right, and that states must recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other states.

Today’s news is almost too amazing for words. I have many gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender friends, some of whom reside in states that previously barred them from the institution of marriage. Now, they have the exact same rights as their heterosexual peers. Our nation has been transformed, from one in which homosexuality was thought of as an “illness” and gays and lesbians were targeted by police and politicians and religious leaders to one which recognizes their dignity and worth.

I will certainly write more about this soon, but for now we should all celebrate this momentous occasion. Congratulations to the LGBTQ community; and to all same-sex partners who can now marry, I wish you all the best of luck.
