During the Jan. 21, 2021 episode of The American Journal, Infowars host Harrison Smith gave full-throated support to the racist “white genocide” conspiracy theory. Smith took far-right talking points about demographics, abortion, and public education and weaved them into an absurd argument that white people face persecution on par with that of Uyghurs in China.

In a July 2020 appearance on War Room, Smith promoted the white nationalist “great replacement” conspiracy, which posits that white people in majority-white nations are being deliberately “replaced” by immigrants of color. Harrison claimed that, as a result, the solidly Republican state of Texas is slowly going blue.

The “white genocide” conspiracy functions in much the same way as the “great replacement” — the latter of which originated in Europe. According to proponents of the “white genocide” conspiracy, white people in the U.S. and Europe are being reduced to minority status as a result of nonwhite immigration, declining white birthrates, and racial intermarriage.

(A subset of this conspiracy alleges that white farmers in South Africa are being murdered as part of an ongoing “white genocide.” Infowars has been sympathetic to this false claim as well.)

“I have this weird consistency where I think the genocide of the Uyghur people in China is bad, and I think the genocide of European people in Europe is also bad,” Smith exclaimed. The Chinese government has been accused of holding Uyghur people in concentration camps, and subjecting them to indoctrination, forced labor, and sterilization.

Needless to say no such campaign is being waged against white people in the U.S. or Europe, but that didn’t stop Smith from trying to force the analogy.

For example, Smith read from an article describing the attempts to suppress the birthrate within the Uyghur population including forced sterilization. “We went over that, China, you can’t force the sterilization, you have to convince the children they’re trans. That’s how you sterilize ’em,” Smith said. “It’s way easier. It’s good in that case.”

He also likened “boarding schools” that are “designed to assimilate and indoctrinate” Uyghur children to U.S. public schools that “only push a progressive agenda” and use “lesson plans” based on The 1619 Project which, Smith falsely claimed, tells white children “their very DNA is evil.”

The 1619 Project is a Pulitzer Prize-winning long-form journalism project published by The New York Times which “aims to reframe the country’s history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of our national narrative.”

It has unsurprisingly been attacked by conservatives, and the Trump administration released a rebuttal called the 1776 Report which historians criticized as inaccurate.

Smith also suggested that the “quickly falling birthrate” among white people coupled with “bringing in millions upon millions upon millions of foreigners every single year” would qualify as “conditions calculated to cause the group’s physical destruction.”

There is no plan “calculated” to cause the “physical destruction” of white people by lowering their birthrate. Moreover, immigration is also not part of a plan to destroy white people in Europe or the U.S. And Harrison Smith offers no evidence in his monologue that it is.

After noting that “forcibly transferring children of the group to another group” is a genocidal policy, Smith responded by saying, “[A]ll you have to do is just use television, you use cartoons, use talking, and then maybe [former CIA Director] John Brennan and the lawyer for PBS will get their desire and … the Department of Homeland Security will forcibly remove Trump supporters’ children.”

“Of course, that’s already happening, so, I don’t really need to go much further into that,” he added. Again, this is very clearly not happening.

The Trump administration, however, did institute a policy of separating migrant children from their families with no plans to reunite them. Some of those migrant children were later adopted by American parents. Immigrant women were also subjected to forced sterilizations at ICE facilities, and some were later deported.

“But, here’s the deal,” Smith declared, “I don’t like what’s happening to the Uyghurs. I’m against it. I’m anti-genocide. I’m a radical like that. But I’m not too worried about them because after all there are 12 million of them in China alone. China’s doing everything they can to decrease that, but, 12 million.”

Smith pivoted to a country he thinks is definitely facing the threat of genocide, however: Ireland. Yes, Ireland, which he called the “perfect example of what’s going on.” Ireland had a population of over 6 million as of 2016, but a government-appointed Pensions Commission recommended an additional 4 million people to sustain the pension system.

“Solution: genocide!” said Smith, referring to the proposed influx of migrants. “Far, far greater genocidal activity there in the nation of Ireland than has ever been put forward by the Uyghurs.”

Again, mass migration of Han Chinese to Xinjiang is mentioned as part of a campaign of genocide against the Uyghurs because it was coupled with other steps. This includes forced sterilizations and abortions, and the use of re-education camps to destroy their cultural identity. Immigration is not a de facto genocidal policy.

Smith ended with a rant about how “genocidal programs” have been “couched in this belief that’s now been spread everywhere [that] white people are evil, white people are colonizers, colonizers deserve to die, they are evil because of their DNA.”

He said that Ireland has “never colonized” any nation but is “now getting the full force and brunt of the anti-white agenda that is seeking to literally genocide the entire people of that population.” He went on to say that “white people are a global minority” that is “being genocided.”

Smith concluded by telling viewers: “And that’s the headline. Stop white genocide.”
