The conspiracy-peddling website Infowars is no stranger to promoting white nationalism. Hosts have given a platform to racists and antisemites including Simon Roche, Nick Fuentes, E. Michael Jones, Henrik Palmgren and Lana Lokteff. And now, one of their hosts directly cited a white nationalist conspiracy that has inspired several acts of terrorism.

During the July 20, 2020 episode of War Room, substitute host Harrison Smith regurgitated white nationalist talking points about the impact that demographic changes will have on Texas, which leans Republican. Smith warned viewers about so-called “demographic replacement” and fearmongered over non-white birthrates.

“We’re already in major, major danger of losing Texas,” Smith said before putting up a map of Texas which showed how each county voted during the 2016 presidential election.

“Essentially every county along the Mexican border is blue, or is rapidly turning blue” he noted. “And this blue wave, if you will, coming up from Mexico is increasing year over year. You see the counties along the Mexican border become a darker shade of blue, and you see that shade of blue extending out more towards the center of Texas.”

Smith claimed that “immigration control,” constructing a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and “deporting the millions and millions of Mexican citizens that are now in our country” is imperative to keeping Texas red. He added that these “Mexican citizens” are “having kids at a rate four to five times the rate of the native Anglo descendants of Texas.”

Hispanic immigrants weren’t the only target of Smith’s ire, however. He also singled out U.S. citizens who moved from blue states like California and New York to Texas, calling them “locusts” and a “plague.”

Smith pulled up a video depicting armed members of Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which he dubbed the “unofficial” military of Mexico. Smith claimed, without evidence, that they were “making inroads into small Texas towns” and that local Texas officials have cartel connections. Smith complained that “this isn’t even reported on the news.”

He then said that the “invasion is not just one of demographic replacement, it’s one of total domination by criminal elements from Mexico.”

This claim echoes the white nationalist “great replacement” conspiracy theory, which alleges that white people in majority-white nations are being deliberately “replaced” by immigrants of color. The supposed goal of this conspiracy is to reduce white people to a minority and inexorably change solidly red states to blue states.

This conspiracy theory has motivated a number of terrorist attacks in the past two years, including a shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, TX in 2019 which left 23 people dead. The gunman wrote in an online manifesto that he was trying to stop the “Hispanic invasion of Texas,” and claimed that demographic replacement would turn Texas into a Democratic stronghold.
