So many books, so little time
r/books
Recently, I was sitting in one of my literature classes and I heard a classmate make an off hand remark regarding her opinions on authors that churn out several novels within a year with them all landing on the New York Times bestseller list regardless of quality. This prompted my professor to go on a long and winded response on how authors such as Nora Roberts and (mostly) James Patterson write for a profit and turning book sales into a monopoly. Iโve only read one book by Nora Roberts and I canโt say I enjoyed it much, but Iโm also a very nit picky person when it comes to books, so I have no strong connection to either author. What do you guys think? No hate to anyone who loves these authors, read whatever suits your literary fancy!
Edit: I feel I should clarify that the opening thoughts are not my own, but just what I've heard from my British Lit class at about 9:45 in the morning!
Im 16 and we just read Catcher In the Rye for the first time. I really like how schools push this book for such young students, its a jaded, traumatic, bleak and often depressing look on society (endearing at times i must admit)...all coming from a teen in the late 40's...
all my classmates though Holden was a self-entitled, self-absorbed, immature, privelleged kid. No clue where this notion comes from, Holden clearly has experienced great trauma - what with coming to terms with social ostricization, losing his brother and extreme symptoms of depression and PTSD.
He's just a kid with trauma and a different personality who's trying to fit in at the end of the day, and its honestly quite ironic how society in the book looks upon him the same way many readers do; immature, privelleged brat.
Anyhow, I really enjoyed the book. Its extremely unique and suprisingly relateable for the increasing number of depressed adolescents in todays age.
So, what are your guys' thoughts on The Catcher in The Rye?
As the title says. I have had an audible account for years with no problems but now suddenly whenever I try and buy a book I get met with a "this title is not available in your geographical location" message. It's from authors that I have purchased before even some older title that there should be no licensing issues with, I have tried multiple books but I get hit with the message for every single on of them. I reached out to customer service and they were less than helpful saying I was probably was selecting books that weren't available but then why are they even showing up on audible Canada if that is the case? Is anyone else having this problem or is it just me? If so it's probably an issue with my account and I need to try getting ahold of them again.
