Been going through Young's discrography lately and he has a ton of awesome material. But After the Gold Rush is the one I keep coming back to constantly. It's an album I've heard many times over the years and it's really grown as something I would consider as some of the best music I've ever heard.
I think it has some of the best songwriting I've ever heard, with Young creating some lovely narratives that feel both epic and intimate at the same time. The music itself is what really makes this feel like a timeless masterpiece. It's a beautiful piece of melancholy folk-pop, creating a warm, cozy ambiance that drifts throughout the album. Really gives me an aching, nostalgic feeling. It's just one of those perfect long-form pieces of music that gives you an intangible feeling you can't quite put your finger on.
My favourite tracks are Tell Me Why, After the Gold Rush, Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Don't Let it Bring You Down but all the songs are very good even at their worst. These 4 though, are perfect and the best encapsulation of their genre.
Highly, highly recommend this album.
For me, most of the best stuff is from Bob Markley but also a fan of Peter Tosh, Sister Nancy and Yellowman, but want a broader catalog to pull from.
Please don't try to give me Red Red Wine by UB40... hate that.
