In January, I wrote that my piece on the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation was one of the hardest I'd done. This one has been heartbreaking. As organizers have fallen homeless, I uncovered a $6 million property purchased with BLMGNF funds. 1/

In the past, I didn’t think much about what the word “income” meant when I did my taxes. After all, for most people, this is not a mysterious concept. It’s what you made. It says it right there on your W-2. But the past year has been a mind-expanding journey. A tax acid trip.

And some of them (Joy and Jemele) didn't address the findings much at all but instead defended Alicia Garza to change the topic. But I guess that can be expected when the journalists and the activists are besties.

🧵Ok, I am about to go off on rich donors who fund media and how they kinda hide it and why you should know. For four years, I have been a lone voice in my circles asking if all the big tech money and politically motivated donors are really a good thing for journalism.

I learned on Monday night, just as I was preparing myself to promote my first book, that my father had died. It's hard to know how to feel about it. I hadn't seen him in 18 years, for good reason, and I can't say I respected the man. But it put me in a strange head space ...

"The lack of transparency is a serious betrayal. [...] we can’t defend a BLM national leadership that arrogantly refuses to be accountable to Black victims and communities." (Paywall flag)

Glad I got to speak with today and give some insights from my reporting. I hope anyone who gives it a listen takes to heart that the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation is not the modern civil rights movement for Black lives.

As an activist in the BLM movement this article just breaks my heart..but sometimes the truth hurts.

I said it with my last story: Black Lives Matter is a statement of fact that is larger than any one organization. Thank you to my editors and folks w/ for letting me cover this. end/

"With the little people down here," Russell told me, "we was doing something, and our everyday people saw it and wanted to be a part of it, $5 at a time. More than the corporations, I wish we could have a movement full of that." 11/

Russell: "I'm talking about a lady. It's the first time I ever got something, an old Black woman in Orlando, Florida. She wrote me in Ferguson to tell me she saw me in the Ebony." The grandmother then figured out the internet just to donate. 10/

He had stronger words for the organization, but his main thought was: "I hope it wake people up, but I just don't want people to quit. I don't want the funders to quit." And he's not talking about corporations. 9/

The Ferguson center would cost a fraction of the nearly $6 million property. Russell said, local activists, "all these Black people and Black women–Black folks who struggling and die penniless–I don't think they would do something like that." 8/

Russell has been working with Mike Brown Sr–father of the slain Brown Jr whose death at the hands of police sparked national outrage in 2014. This property is on the books but Russell can't pull together enough money for a community center in Ferguson. 7/

This isn't necessarily fraudulent but it’s probably a waste of resources. Tory Russell, activist in Ferguson, thinks so. More than angry he became depressed when I told him about the property, thinking about what could've been done with the money. 6/

When I spoke with nonprofit experts, they told me that the luxury home and pooling of resources with interrelated entities raises red flags for nonprofit operations. Some said a formal investigation might be needed to sort everything out. 5/

Through reporting, I learned that the BLMGNF has pooled resources with consulting firms run by Patrisse Cullors, the former exec director, and Shalomyah Bowers, the dep exec director, to monitor social media and investigate journalists including myself. 4/

When I asked, my questions were called defamatory and the BLMGNF jumped into a mode where they sought to kill my story or detract from its findings. I know this because I later acquired a memo of their plans. They looked to bury the truth. 3/

The property is more than 6,500 square feet, has half a dozen bedrooms and bathrooms, a pool and bungalow, soundstage, and an outdoor fireplace made of Italian marble, among numerous other luxuries. 2/
