OKAY OKAY SO: in my headcannon, he's part of this species of mostly upper class, mostly all-powerful entities that inhabit different dimensions!
He was a famous writer before his works lost traction and became more criticized: many suspect that after one too many stuffy dinner parties where he got drunk and rambled about his sorrows and his acquaintances dismissing him as an insufferable snob led him to go mad and lock himself up in his mansion, pouring over another Story, absolutely invested in making it the best Story he could write - a story about a man named Stanley.
