Regional Music Genres

To show our appreciation for the contributors that meticulously tag releases with genres and styles, we studied decades-old forum posts to connect the more than 500 official music styles in the Discogs Database with the region that they originated in. From there, we plotted them on a map, creating a visual representation of the distribution of style tags for the first time ever.

Each circle on the maps links to a Database page that contains information such as the top contributors, most-collected releases, what’s trending, earliest releases, and descriptions of the style. It’s a bonafide treasure trove of music discovery, and we hope you enjoy exploring the genres as much as we loved learning about them.

We were able to connect no less than 300 styles to their country or region of origin. Many are classical or traditional music styles, but there are plenty of modern ones as well.

What is perhaps most surprising is the unequal distribution of the tags. Take, for example, the difference between Cuba (17 styles) with China (1 style.) At Discogs, our mission is to “build the biggest and most comprehensive music database and marketplace,” and the maps are clear – we are falling short in some parts of the world.

If you have been a Discogs contributor for long enough, this shouldn’t be news to you. A major theme of 2018 was filling in the gaps in the Discogs Database. Despite previous efforts, we still have a long way to go.

Found something missing in the Database but have no clue where to start with a submission? If you know of a regional music style that should be in the Discogs Database, review the criteria and submit an official request in this forum thread. Style verification and adding them to the code can take some time, so thank you in advance for your patience.
