Brazil is the largest country in South America (8.515.759 km²).
The regions are: North, Northeast, Center-West, Southeast, South.
This division uses criteria, such as: geographic, economic, cultural and social aspects.
Most of the Amazon rainforest is located in this region.
It’s marked by constant conflicts between landowners and indigenous tribes.
Its economy is based on iron, energy production, electronic manufacturing, latex and tourism.
Northeast
It’s very hot all year long and its beautiful beaches make the region very appealing to foreign and Brazilian tourists.
The region has the lowest levels in many social indicators and it was the first place colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century.
Its economy is based on tourism, cocoa, machinery manufacturing and textiles.
Center-West
The Center-West is the second largest region of Brazil, but in terms of population, it's the least populated one.
The country's capital, Brasília, is located in this region.
Its territory also covers the Complexo do Pantanal, a great venue for ecotourism.
The Center-West is the least industrialized region in the country and its economy is based on livestock, soybeans and tourism.
Southeast
The Southeast is the vital center of the country, where the largest cities, the highest population density and the best ports are concentrated.
The Southeast population is composed of all kinds of nationalities.
This region received immigrants from different parts of the world, mainly from Italy, Japan and Germany.
The Southeast region is the major powerhouse of the Brazilian economy.
South
The South is the smallest region of the Brazilian territory.
Along with the state of São Paulo, the region has a strong immigrant presence.
The majority of immigrants came from Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Japan.
Its economy is based on machinery and automobile industries, textiles, tourism, energy production and information technology.

The Federative Republic of Brazil is a union of twenty-seven Federative Units (Portuguese: Unidades Federativas, UF): twenty-six states (estados) and one federal district (distrito federal), where the federal capital, Brasília, is located. The states are generally based on historical, conventional borders which have developed over time. The Federal District is not formally a state, but shares some characteristics of a state as well as some of a municipality. The codes given below are defined in ISO 3166-2:BR.
History
The present states of Brazil trace their history directly to the captaincies established by Portugal following the Treaty of Tordesillas which divided part of South America between Portugal and Spain.
The first administrative divisions of Brazil were the hereditary captaincies (capitanias hereditárias), stretches of land granted by the Portuguese Crown to noblemen or merchants with a charter to colonize the land. As the map shows, these divisions generally followed lines of latitude. Each of the holders of these captaincies was referred to as a captain donatary (capitão donatário). These captaincies were to be passed from father to son, but the Crown retained the power to revoke them, which the King indeed did in the 16th century.

Aquarela do Brasil
"Aquarela do Brasil" (Portuguese: [akwaˈɾɛlɐ du bɾaˈziw], Watercolor of Brazil), known in the English-speaking world simply as "Brazil", is one of the most famous Brazilian songs, written by Ary Barroso in 1939.
Background and composition
Ary Barroso wrote "Aquarela do Brasil" in early 1939, when he was prevented from leaving his home one rainy night due to a heavy storm. Its title, a reference to watercolor painting, is a clear reference to the rain. He also wrote "Três Lágrimas" (Three teardrops) on that same night, before the rain ended.
Describing the song in an interview to Marisa Lira, of the newspaper Diário de Notícias, Barroso said that he wanted to "free the samba away from the tragedies of life, of the sensual scenario already so explored". According to the composer, he "felt all the greatness, the value and the wealth of our land", reliving "the tradition of the national panels".
Initially, he wrote the first chords, which he defined as "vibrant", and a "plangent of emotions". The original beat "sang on [his] imagination, highlighting the sound of the rain, on syncope beats of fantastic tambourins". According to him, "the rest came naturally, music and lyrics at once". He declared to have felt like another person after writing the song.

Brasil (mythical island)
Brasil, also known as Hy-Brasil or several other variants, is a phantom island said to lie in the Atlantic Ocean west of Ireland. Irish myths described it as cloaked in mist except for one day every seven years, when it became visible but still could not be reached.
Etymology of the name
The etymology of the names Brasil and Hy-Brasil is unknown, but in Irish tradition it is thought to come from the Irish Uí Breasail (meaning "descendants (i.e., clan) of Breasal"), one of the ancient clans of northeastern Ireland. cf. Old Irish: Í: island; bres: beauty, worth, great, mighty.
Despite the similarity, the name of the country Brazil has no connection to the mythical islands. The South American country was at first named Ilha de Vera Cruz (Island of the True Cross) and later Terra de Santa Cruz (Land of the Holy Cross) by the Portuguese navigators who discovered the land. After some decades, it started to be called "Brazil" (Brasil, in Portuguese) due to the exploitation of native Brazilwood, at that time the only export of the land. In Portuguese, brazilwood is called pau-brasil, with the word brasil commonly given the etymology "red like an ember", formed from Latin brasa ("ember") and the suffix -il (from -iculum or -ilium).

Brazil is the largest country in South America (8.515.759 km²).
The regions are: North, Northeast, Center-West, Southeast, South.
This division uses criteria, such as: geographic, economic, cultural and social aspects.
Most of the Amazon rainforest is located in this region.
It’s marked by constant conflicts between landowners and indigenous tribes.
Its economy is based on iron, energy production, electronic manufacturing, latex and tourism.
Northeast
It’s very hot all year long and its beautiful beaches make the region very appealing to foreign and Brazilian tourists.
The region has the lowest levels in many social indicators and it was the first place colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century.
Its economy is based on tourism, cocoa, machinery manufacturing and textiles.
Center-West
The Center-West is the second largest region of Brazil, but in terms of population, it's the least populated one.
The country's capital, Brasília, is located in this region.
Its territory also covers the Complexo do Pantanal, a great venue for ecotourism.
The Center-West is the least industrialized region in the country and its economy is based on livestock, soybeans and tourism.
Southeast
The Southeast is the vital center of the country, where the largest cities, the highest population density and the best ports are concentrated.
The Southeast population is composed of all kinds of nationalities.
This region received immigrants from different parts of the world, mainly from Italy, Japan and Germany.
The Southeast region is the major powerhouse of the Brazilian economy.
South
The South is the smallest region of the Brazilian territory.
Along with the state of São Paulo, the region has a strong immigrant presence.
The majority of immigrants came from Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Japan.
Its economy is based on machinery and automobile industries, textiles, tourism, energy production and information technology.

Brazil is the largest country in South America (8.515.759 km²).
The regions are: North, Northeast, Center-West, Southeast, South.
This division uses criteria, such as: geographic, economic, cultural and social aspects.
Most of the Amazon rainforest is located in this region.
It’s marked by constant conflicts between landowners and indigenous tribes.
Its economy is based on iron, energy production, electronic manufacturing, latex and tourism.
Northeast
It’s very hot all year long and its beautiful beaches make the region very appealing to foreign and Brazilian tourists.
The region has the lowest levels in many social indicators and it was the first place colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century.
Its economy is based on tourism, cocoa, machinery manufacturing and textiles.
Center-West
The Center-West is the second largest region of Brazil, but in terms of population, it's the least populated one.
The country's capital, Brasília, is located in this region.
Its territory also covers the Complexo do Pantanal, a great venue for ecotourism.
The Center-West is the least industrialized region in the country and its economy is based on livestock, soybeans and tourism.
Southeast
The Southeast is the vital center of the country, where the largest cities, the highest population density and the best ports are concentrated.
The Southeast population is composed of all kinds of nationalities.
This region received immigrants from different parts of the world, mainly from Italy, Japan and Germany.
The Southeast region is the major powerhouse of the Brazilian economy.
South
The South is the smallest region of the Brazilian territory.
Along with the state of São Paulo, the region has a strong immigrant presence.
The majority of immigrants came from Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Japan.
Its economy is based on machinery and automobile industries, textiles, tourism, energy production and information technology.

States of Brazil
The Federative Republic of Brazil is a union of twenty-seven Federative Units (Portuguese: Unidades Federativas, UF): twenty-six states (estados) and one federal district (distrito federal), where the federal capital, Brasília, is located. The states are generally based on historical, conventional borders which have developed over time. The Federal District is not formally a state, but shares some characteristics of a state as well as some of a municipality. The codes given below are defined in ISO 3166-2:BR.
History
The present states of Brazil trace their history directly to the captaincies established by Portugal following the Treaty of Tordesillas which divided part of South America between Portugal and Spain.
The first administrative divisions of Brazil were the hereditary captaincies (capitanias hereditárias), stretches of land granted by the Portuguese Crown to noblemen or merchants with a charter to colonize the land. As the map shows, these divisions generally followed lines of latitude. Each of the holders of these captaincies was referred to as a captain donatary (capitão donatário). These captaincies were to be passed from father to son, but the Crown retained the power to revoke them, which the King indeed did in the 16th century.
