Just a reminder that we aren't gatekeeping Pride.

I know it's only April, but I just saw such a rancid take on Tiktok (and the person blocked me, woo!) That I need to vent somewhere.

The argument went "bi/pan/queer people with cishet partners shouldn't bring those partners into queer spaces/Pride because it makes those spaces unsafe for lgbt folks."

Which is a frankly awful take for many reasons.

First of all "makes a space unsafe" is not an identity. It is a behavior. And ANYONE who is making those spaces unsafe, regardless of their identity, *shouldn't be there.* Whether they are a cishet man or a lesbian, if you are making people unsafe, you shouldn't be there.

Secondly, it's blatantly unenforceable. You can't clock someone's identity at the door. You don't know if they are bi or trans or nonbinary. And no one should have to out themselves to a bouncer.

As a caveat to this, you also don't ever know *why* someone might bring their cishet partner to pride. Whether that's because this is an important part of their life they want to share with their partner, or they are disabled and need help managing their meds or mobility aides, or the partner is a designated driver. You just don't know. So even if you did know they were cishet, maybe they have a "good reason" for being there.

So between it not solving an actual problem to not being enforceable, all this discourse does is create an EXTREMELY hostile environment for, well, bi/pan/queer folks especially. Always. We always get targeted for this kind of stuff.

But also anyone who might worry that *they* aren't queer enough or not look queer enough. Trans folks who haven't socially transitioned, non-binary folks who aren't androgynous enough, ace and aro folks, people who are newly out- they see this rhetoric and think "Oh no. What is someone sees me and thinks I'm cishet? What if someone tells me I can't be there? What if I don't really belong?"

So we aren't doing it. It's shitty snd hostile and biphobic and exclusionary.

Everyone can come to pride.

Except cops.

Fuck cops.

like 99% of "men and women are soooo different!!!" comedy is literally just describing the experience of not understanding other people. like it's not that women never say what they mean talking to other people is just like that. it can be hard to understand what other people are thinking. bioessentialism really rots the brain

genderkoolaid

"women will say I'm fine and then not mean it" yeah that's something literally everybody does. is this your first time interacting with another human being my guy

So, I’ve been writing again. I’ve decided that I want to finish Blood in the Breeze. It won’t get the same “professional” style editing as my last two books, but it’ll be finished and that’s more important to me right now. So, have a peek at some of the 1700 words I wrote tonight for chapter 15.

“Everyone looks like shit.” Theron noted the bags under multiple sets of eyes, frayed or greasy hair, not to mention the overall mood of the room.

“Is that your professional opinion?” Zolah saw the same thing, but she was too polite to say it. Theron reconsidered. Maybe polite wasn’t the right word, but he knew it had something to do with Imperial breeding. They tended to cut with backhanded compliments instead of just calling it for what it was.

Theron nodded. “Yeah, I think it is.” The meeting had gone as expected, with arguments over tactics and whether to let Vaylin leave the safety of her lair or hit her before she could start her pilgrimage. They knew where she was going, but not where she was coming from, not exactly, at least.

In the end, a strike team had been assembled to camp out around the moon Vaylin was rumored to be hiding on. Hirani would fly the mission, and Fynta, Torian, Felix, Rusk, and Verin, of all people, would be accompanying Lana to Nathama. After that, Fynta said they would figure it out. Theron sighed at the memory. He really hated that woman sometimes.

I am a Gen Xer, and I've been having some conversations about photography and selfies lately, and I want to share a little bit, because I think younger queer people don't quite understand what things used to be like.

I have no snapshots of the era of my life in which I was smootching girls behind the tilt-a-whirl at a shitty traveling carnival in a dusty empty lot. In fact, I have no pictures of any of my friends from that era aside from yearbook pictures of the friends who were in my school. I was a little goth teenager and many of my friends were also punk queers. We could not take pictures of each other.

Why? Because pictures were taken on film. And film needed to go somewhere to be developed. And if there were pictures of people "being gay" then sometimes your whole roll would disappear at the photo processor. Or your 36 exposure roll would return only 32 pictures to you. Because the processor would censor it. And aside from that, you had to be cautious about whether a photograph would somehow be seen by parents, who could kick your friend out of their house. Just because someone was holding hands in the background of a photo.

Snapshots were for kids who did sports and wholesome activities.

A little later, I had a friend who took photography and had access to the school photo lab (the art teacher didn't care as long as no one was developing nudity), and there were some photographers who hung out with the skater kids. But prior to that, there was a whole era of my life, people who were super important to me for a time, that I just don't have pictures of. At all. Because it wasn't safe.

I found myself recently explaining this to a younger coworker and another colleague in the meeting, a gay man about my age, was nodding along. This was an important facet of life if you were a queer teen in the 80s. You didn't have pictures of your people until you knew someone with use of a darkroom.

let’s make a list of tumblr writers whose books we should be supporting

biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

off the top of my head there’s @thebibliosphere @jenniferrpovey @seananmcguire who else

throws-a-peace-sign

@gallusrostromegalus has their Family Lore book available for Pre-Order on their Patreon.

biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

I did not know that!!! their family lore posts are incredibly funny and remarkably written, this is a book we absolutely must order!

biggest-gaudiest-patronuses

thank you everyone who mentioned @wodneswynn’s post-apocalyptic lesbian romance adventure novel!

dea-certe

Also @katy-l-wood and her book, Glory and Poison!

katy-l-wood

Awww. Thanks!

thebibliosphere

Thank you for the rec, Gaud!

natalieironside

Due to Tumblr fuckery it is now @natalieironside ’s post-apocalyptic lesbian romance adventure novel

:3 thanks y'all 😊

earlgraytay

@shiraglassman ’s Jewish fantasy romances are the most adorable shit I think I’ve ever seen

also @fierceawakening (wlw romance/kink) and @tyrantisterror (fun queer kaiju fiction)

sakon76

@copperbadge ‘s original novels are always delightful.

marisolinspades

Everything @ekjohnston writes stops my heart and then starts it again, but this time filled with more joy than before. Aetherbound was one of those books I would have turned over and immediately started back at page 1 as soon as I finished it except I realized it was 3 am and no one in the house had eaten dinner yet.

unforth

@duckprintspress (which I own) and @oficmag both work with fanfiction authors to publish their original work, and nearly all the authors are on tumblr (tho some don’t openly connect “fandom them” to “author them.”)

so mad that our takeaway from the mask thing hasn't been "wait, so we could have been getting like 80% fewer colds and viruses this entire time?"

headspace-hotel

We really just accepted that "yeah, every several months we just feel like shit and do nothing but lay in bed for a week while so much snot pours out of our face holes that we have to keep 27 wads of tissue within arm's reach" even though the solution was not only simple and easy but also offered infinite possibilities for fashionable accessorizing. I hate it here

headspace-hotel

i'm never going to stop wearing a mask in the winter time because 1) colds and flu, obviously 2) my lips don't get chapped and bleed in the winter anymore. This is revolutionary. 3) it's actually just common sense to wear a badass goth wolf skull mask in your day to day life??

now I can wear whatever clothes I want and people will still know I'm cool and goth

bemusedlybespectacled

"oh no everyone not getting the flu for two years is going to make people's immune systems weak and flu season will be worse!"

1) that's not how the immune system works. 2) masking killed some strains of the flu because there was no one to pass it on to. we have the ability to MAKE VIRUSES EXTINCT with masks but oh noooo we have to worry about a piece of fabric on our faces. spare me.

So About Tumblr Blaze

nonsenseplayercharacter

As the new Tumblr feature has rolled out, everyone’s been having a lot of fun seeing ad pvp, gay hobbits, random people’s pets, and even the limited time weed discount. But uh. I’ve discovered something potentially really bad about Blaze.

Blaze does not filter blocked tags.

Luckily I don’t have any tags blocked for serious reasons–I block the furry tag because blocking nsfw wasn’t enough to keep sketch art off what the algorithm wanted for my dash, and I block homestuck because. Well I don’t even know why; I click every post with it but like. it’s there as a warning or something I don’t know.

ANYWAYS I’ve gotten ads for both of these tags, one a furry artist with open commissions (their art was great, good on them for advertising an actual product /gen) and the other an ad for the Homestuck Discord server. Neither of them were blocked on my dashboard.

This is an important issue because of the way Tumblr is filtering Blaze posts. While Blaze posts are put through a screening process, it’s not very vigorous. One post tagged ‘sex’ and another containing the entire Bee Movie script were allowed past the filters. As with the previous ads, these ads in particular are fine. However, Tumblr’s leniency with this can cause issues to people blocking tags for serious reasons. For example, a post tagged unreality and boosted using Blaze would still show up on somebody’s dash who needs it filtered.

So, what do we do? Let me be clear, I am escatic for Blaze to roll out for all users. I think it’s a fantastic idea. In addition, I don’t want the solution to be “better” screening for Blaze posts. Tumblr has always been the website that lets you say die. I want to keep it as such. However, I think it’s very important that @staff try to please implement a feature within Blaze that allows ads to be filtered by blocked tags. Either by checking if a user is blocking a tag before selecting them to see it, or by blocking it on their dash. Clearly the first is ideal but I’m not a web developer (I’m barely a developer at all), so whatever can be done to make sure this feature can be implemented safely is important to me.

Thanks for reading this if you did, I’m not sure how to get the word out but I want people to be informed before anything bad potentially happens.

boosting this could be a serious problem and while I'm find with getting blaze stuff in general I will find a way to block it if my blocked tags don't work with it

Etsy raising fees for shopowners after record profits over pandemic.

naniiebimworks

Hey- there’s a feedback survey on the bottom of this newsflash about raising costs on storekeepers by etsy. LET THEM HEAR.

Pls reblog and spread- most of us use etsy because we need the platform for the tax sorting and VAT sending codes- and also because the pandemic pushed a lot of us online. This rise after cost of living rises for storeowners- is BAD. If you have a store- do the survey and LET THEM KNOW.

THEY MADE PROFIT THEN WANT TO MAKE US PAY MORE FEES.

naniiebimworks

BTW - basically if i want to sell overseas and not register for tax in every single country that requires tax to be sent to them- i have to use an online marketplace that sorts the tax out for me- namely- etsy. there arent a whole lot more that will- and selling off my own website means i have to cut off most of non-uk.

Also- anything I sell to the EU- needs a posting code to state the tax is paid and the customer will not get taxed again so their item is withheld until they pay up.

This is why I’m doing the survey rather than just jumping ship- I CAN’T.

We Belong to the Light: Interlude

image

Unconscious, barely alive, one incident from his past passes before Malavai Quinn's eyes.

Chapter 14 of We Belong to the Light is here -- after this, we get back to the present where Quinn and his wife, Xhareen, are stuck in quarantine and they finally have to face the train wreck they've made of their relationship.

Now they were all on a dangerous path. Yes, Baras – Darth Baras of the Dark Council – had tried to kill her, his carefully groomed, deadly apprentice, not caring that he, Malavai Quinn, Baras’s faithful agent, would be collateral damage. Yes, they were justified in trying to thwart Baras’s continued attempts to take her down.

But life on the run from a powerful Sith, and his former master, had taken its toll on Quinn’s nerves and his sense of what duty truly was, and what loyalty he owed to his calling as an Imperial officer. His whole life, his whole identity, was wrapped up in that carefully tailored uniform and what it, and all he had suffered for, meant.

He could have taken a plea deal after his humiliation at Druckenwell. He could have left the service, slipped back into a comfortable, wealthy civilian life, backed by enough family credits that no one would ever challenge his tainted service record.

That wasn’t who he was. The only question he struggled with currently was: Who am I now?

He was the man who could help her, that’s who.

He was the man who loved her.

He had to accept that, too.

swtor fanfic malavai quinn sw oooo! Dammit I need to get caught up on this lol
