You don’t need to cover whole energy demand with nuclear, only what is essential for the country to survive until renewables are available again.

That’s what we are doing in Finland, also what most of the other countries are doing.

I am not convinced that sufficient storage solutions will be available by 2030, thus it would be pretty damn important to start doing something now.

True big reactors take time, so maybe Germany should become the leader in SMR reactors. First commercial ones are only years away and the technology is well known.

Doh, you just pointed out why electricity in Germany is more expensive, subsidies.

If you look at spot prices in Nordpool they are about the same. But due to German grid being what is is, Germans pay super high base prices and transfer fees.

Except that this approach has Germany even more dependent on Russian gas, thus making it an eunuch in international politics.

Other countries are maintaining their nuclear reactors and even starting to build more. Thus they have the base and emergency power. And thus are not dependent on solutions that no not exist.

If you have not yet figured out, Germany does not have grid scale storage solutions to speak of. Germany does not have storage to last even bloody 30 minutes, much less output capacity to actually use that storage.

Sure there is Norwegian hydro, but the thing is also many other countries are making assumptions based on it’s availability.

Edit: Germany is already net energy exporter, but still deathly dependent on fossil energy. Why? Because Germany has not invested enough into storage. Only doing the easy part.

So, is Germany ok with blackouts on those days? Either you have energy capacity or you don’t.

Also what would have happened on past winter when windless days were more common than the average, is it ok that people start freezing to death. After all gas is not supposed to be used either.

It’s also straight up stupid to look at current situation.

Shift to green energy is coming want it or not. Thus both the volume and price of fossil energy exports will collapse.

While at the same time as climate change is destroying increasing amounts of arable land, food will become an existential issue, and thus value of food exports will increase.

And remember, Russia was expecting to take over Ukraine in 3 days with toothless response from the west.

Still not getting it I see.

Fossil fuel exports will taper out, and since Russia cannot compete with technology they will need a new simple export. Food.

So just Russias current output will not be enough, they want more.

Ehh, read up a bit of history. Ukraine was the breadbasket of Soviet Union.

And now Ukraine is a strategic exporter to many countries, to level that there are fears of famines caused by collapse of Ukrainian exports.

Getting to control that is a really major geopolitical weapon.

And as what comes to arrogance.

Germans are paying twice the cost of electricity than we do in the Nordic countries, and with a lot bigger carbon footprint than we do. And you have the arrogance to say that your grid engineers would know something that we don’t.

It is baffling kind of naivety that energy companies would care. Variable costs are energy company’s best friend. It allows to pad the electricity contracts with very nice profit margins.

The problem however is that without storage the extra renewables capacity does not really help.

And right now the investments into storage are pitiful. Due to fact that it easily gets even more expensive than nuclear.

Cute, but what about when the wind does not blow and it’s nighttime?

What we need is either storage infrastructure and plants to burn hydrogen/ammonia. Or we need more nuclear.

We can literally add 10x more wind and are still fossil dependent during still nights. Hell probably 50x would not do it. As we would need massive overcapacity everywhere, due to few windy locations having to supply very large areas during still weather pattern.

It’s all about farmland and food production. As farming gets increasingly more difficult, the more valuable bountiful fields of Ukraine will become.

You might want to read about GreenPeace energy, a fossil gas co-op started by GreenPeace, and German Greens being obviously involved due to have same people as active members.

Ehh, said bureaucrats want everyone being dependent on them, but yes anyone who "breaks the mold" is getting extra attention.

[–]4745454B 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Why on earth anyone would declare illegal income?

This is a case of a bureaucrat with a caretaker complex, which means that all foreigners, or actually preferably everyone should be dependent and subservient to the bureaucrats.

Not uncommon attitude unfortunately.

And we don’t want any thus I am overjoyed that we are finally about to join NATO. But a national character is built on traumas of previous generations.

When we once learned that only way for a small country to survive with a neighbor like ours. Constant readiness and knowing what has to be done became a part of what we are.

[–]4745454B 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nope in Finland the soldiers are not disposable, in fact most of the male population have military training, so are soldiers when needed.

Basically we exist in order to kill invaders until invaders stop coming. It is what we are, our national identity is defined by killing invaders.

All I am seeing is excuses.

And "Germany bad" is such a lame copout, very typical way to try to avoid any blame. There is no excuse for closing nuclear and keep using coal.

Also nuclear not replacing coal is pure ideological bullshit. Only place where it can't do it directly is heat, and even that would be totally feasible to retrofit, just like we did in Finland. The secondary circulation cooling water is totally radiation free anyways.

In other words Germany put money above environment. What else is new?

Same as with Russia appeasement, almost anything for cheap energy.

It’s not about being net exporter that’s easy when renewables are available. It’s about what the country uses when renewables are out. And in that Germany is super dirty.

And if he would have hi-vis jacket or vest, he would be effectively invisible.

We call them invisibility cloaks when on read team engagement, we wealthier or higher up the person is, the more invisible a person in working clothes will be.

CO2 is CO2.

And do you really claim that the 10GW nuclear that has been closed so far would not be able to supplant most of the equivalent coal even without dual use? I have really hard time to believe that.
