Hand bones are easier to break than those in the face but in terms of physics, if you protect one you also protect the other as the force being dissipated is applied to both equally, just in opposite directions. The difference is the max tensile strength of both ends. You can punch a wall harder with gloves and tape, but the damage on it will be reduced.

It’s literally impossible in this reality to throw a punch that is easier on your hands than it is on someone’s face at the same time. lol

Mike wouldn’t have as many KO’s without gloves because what makes a KO isn’t the puncturing, it’s the brain rattling and for that goal where you hit matters much more than with what you hit. Coincidentally, wearing a glove helps you hit the “bonier” ends of the face that can cause the most rattling.

A Sledgehammer to the dome will most certainly cave in your head and smoosh your brain but it most likely won’t knock you out immediately in the way a padded cross to the chin does.

Bare knucle boxing, or at least just taped can definitely cause more damage because there’s no dissipation on padding, but more damage means more damage in both ends, and the hands tend to break easier.

The reason hitting with a hand/sledge isn’t intuitively comparable is because a sledgehammer is infinitely harder so it has no issue absorbing all the counter reaction from hitting someone’s face.

The most apt comparison should be a bone sledgehammer but even then, if it’s 15lbs and has the design of a hammer, it’ll still probably hit harder than a punch but it’ll also break in the process.
