Telltale signs you're in a rough/deprived area? by Throwaway_Tenderloin in AskUK

[–]gintokireddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At night: shops with just a small window to serve customers (excluding petrol stations) and maybe rats running around.

Women that look like prozzies following you or asking weird shit.

Guys or women randomly shouting/arguing or screaming outside, stuff like "fuck you!" or "touch my car again and I'll shank you"

Day:

Cars with smashed in windows or film over their windows

Homeless/pretend homeless people who are actually crackheads who go to the supermarket toilets in the morning, get changed into scraggy clothes and then sit outside.

You see the same local people walking around talking to themselves, everyone knows who they are, but if you're knew to the area you might mistakenly think they're talking to you and try to respond to them, only for them to awkwardly stare at you.

Trash on the street, boarded up houses, leftover signage from shops that closed down 20+ years ago.

A lot of black Audis or BMWs

Maybe dirtbikes?

Cost of living crisis: More people are worried about their finances than about catching COVID-19 by esprit-de-lescalier in unitedkingdom

[–]gintokireddit [score hidden]  (0 children)

In the real world (ie off reddit), seems hardly anyone has been bothered about covid since around mid 2021 or maybe earlier. Bit of survivor bias I guess, since outdoors or working manual jobs, you're more likely to run into people who don't care that much, because the ones who are still super into covid are at home.

Colby Covington opens as early favorite in potential match up against Khamzat Chimaev by KingJohnTX in MMA

[–]gintokireddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to know how much less tired Khamzat would be if he stuck to his team's gameplan more, instead of chasing the firefight so much. If he fights like against Burns and Colby is able to fight as he did with Usman, then Colby probably is just too much for him, unless Colby's chin is close to going.

Khamzat said in the post-fight conference that when he's fought BJJ blackbelts, he has to think about whether they might submit him, which probably won't be in his mind against Colby, so if he manages to take Colby down he might commit to GnP or getting a submission more than against Burns and who knows if Colby can handle that or not.

Personally, I like Khamzat, but I'm rooting a bit for Colby because I think Dana probably really wants him to lose, so it's a underdog/"fuck you, boss!" moment. And I don't want Colby to have sold his soul for nothing.

Add Aljo cumming on that ass vs TJ Cumishaw or Cuminic Cruz to the card too.

Does Alexander Volkanovski have champ-champ potential after 21 straight wins? by -alc in MMA

[–]gintokireddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't disagree with him at all.

I'd like Cejudo to get a chance (because it's rare to have someone who feasibly get three belts and I just want to see him if he somehow do it against the odds, just like his medal, beating DJ and beating Moraes after the bad start), but Volk has nothing to gain and everything to lose doing that. Unless he gets the belt at LW and then gives Cejudo a shot at FW.

Charles is a fucking dog. I mean, who the fuck gets to the UFC when they have an eye problem causing them to have triple vision? Actually, Oliveira vs Gaethje must be the first title bout between two guys who came up not being able to see their opponent from across the octagon. BMF 2.0.

His style and lankiness also almost makes up for Tony never winning the undisputed belt :(

[–]gintokireddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree he has, in this day and age so cool for him if he gets it, as much as I want to see Max or at least Cejudo. Still got dropped by Max twice in the 2nd fight, no way he gets more than a draw under Pride scoring. Not his fault the Max fight fell through, but hard to see him as undisputed champ until Max loses at FW or Volk beats him in a way where most fans and commentators think he actually won.

Como dizemos a equivalente da frase "by the way" na língua lusófona? by gintokireddit in Portuguese

American wanting to learn conversational Brazilian Portuguese. Best programs for this? by Revenant221 in Portuguese

[–]gintokireddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pimsleur level 2 is also probably on archive.org, via its search function.

Speakingbrazilian.com has a free mini-course on Brazilian pronunciation, which goes through different vowels and consonants, you could go through it within a few hours.

Linguno.com for is a (free, for now) good desktop/mobile friendly site for learning lots of vocab, it has the words grouped into levels of commonality.

This video could give you an idea of vocab specific to yourself to focus on and put into an anki and/or linguno deck (eg where you live, what you eat, what you do or are interested in), starts 2 min in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJci3uVlg4E

Como dizemos a equivalente da frase "by the way" na língua lusófona? by gintokireddit in Portuguese

[–]gintokireddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. "Falando nisso, ele é esperto"

  2. "Falando nisso, você sabe esta música?"

  3. "Falando nisso, queria perguntar...."

  4. "Falando nisso, vou cozinhar as ervilhas"

  5. "eu fiz aquilo, a propósito"

E "chique" só significa como "posh", "fancy", "high class" em inglês? Ou também significa de moda, de bom gosto?

Huge crowds protesting against the newly selected corrupt government all over Pakistan happening now! by alimehdi242 in ThatsInsane

[–]gintokireddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give people an idea how much was lost to corruption, Transparency International estimated that Pakistan lost over 94 billion USD to corruption in 5 years, from 2008 to 2013. The total GDP over those years was $960 billion Pakistan's GDP, so that's about 10% of GDP. That money has several times more spending power in Pakistan than in say, Northern Europe.

He's actually not popular with casuals? It's hard to know what casuals think when you're too deep into being a hardcore fan (of anything). Isn't he on non-MMA podcasts and has been on mainstream TV news?

Chimaev had some decent head movement at times tbf, sometimes a bit predictable though. Not like he kept his head still. It was a good sign that when he had Burns hurt against the fence and was teeing off on him, he still was moving his head defensively and evading Burn's swings.

Young adults have dramatic loss of faith in UK democracy, survey reveals by JayR_97 in unitedkingdom

[–]gintokireddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Brexit referendum result itself only happened because the poor continued to lose out for multiple elections in a row (between the Tories and New Labour) and the marginalised working classes continued to feel marginalised. Otherwise it would only have been a group of elderly people voting for Brexit.

I think my gen (20s) had little faith and were starting to understand the importance of scrapping FPTP and now the new youth will add to that.
