Some my favorites are: "The Red Baron" - Manfred von Richthofen "The Desert Fox" - Erwin Rommel "The Sun King" - Louis XIV "The Lady with the Lamp" - Florence Nightingale "The Scourge of God" - Attila the Hun "The Lion Heart" - Richard I "The White Death" - Simo Häyhä "The sword of Allah" - Khalid ibn al-Walid "Lion of the North" - Gustav Adolf "The Ghost of Kiev" - Unknown
The vikings had a proud tradition of giving such nicknames (think "Eric Bloodaxe" or "Ivar the Boneless", but personally I don't find them clever or interesting.
In my own language (Hebrew) I can think of very some famous nicknames, they are: "The Elder" () - David Ben Gurion "The First Soldier of Judea" () - Ze'ev Jabotinsky "The Sledgehammer" () - Judah Ben Matityahu, "Maccabi"
