Activision Blizzard is giving a thousand game testers full-time jobs and pay bumps by Sorin61 in technology

[–]HerbHurtHoover 100 points101 points  (0 children)

This is a good time to point out that this is why we NEED unions. The only reason blizzard is doing this is because they have been so swamped in extremely public negative press that it tanked their shares so much that they needed a buy out to keep them from spiraling into insolvency.

Or, we could just give employees bargaining power so employees can get benefits without their company having to face an existential crisis first.

Theres also no guarantee these pay bumps won't get diluted by corporate bullshit like lay offs as soon as the cameras stop rolling or that these benefits are a one time gesture that will not apply to future employees.

We NEED unions. Companies do not have the interests of their employees in mind as long as they keep pumping out their bottom line.

I love how a bunch of redditors are saying this sounds awful. If you don’t see the irony look a bit harder. He isn’t being original with this…

Apple employees threaten to quit because Tim Cook told them to come back to office by [deleted] in technology

[–]redlightsaber 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I think it's because they want to avoid a crash in office real estate values.

I remain unconvinced (Google wasn't going to sell off that office space anyways, even if it rose in price stratospherically), but I like the way you think.

I think the reasons are close to the far more pedestrian reason of wanting to continue controlling employees to a larger degree. I'm also willing to be mistaken, but I think it makes sense that not even the CEOs can articulate very well their reasoning, when it seems their metrics show that WfH doesn't result in lost productivity.

and there's no other obvious reason that I can think of.

Pinterest bans climate change misinformation and conspiracy theories by altmorty in technology

God I hate Pinterest so much. So many useless results in Google search that never, ever help with what you were searching for. And you can't even browse the given page without creating an account and logging in! Why does Google prioritize this walled-off website? And they put that stupid icon on every image in certain websites, as if their service is so central to the functioning of the web, even though it does literally nothing.

I believe him. I believe that he does not know how to do this. Doesn't mean that he's right, and the hubris is what should be the point of the story

If you're spending your time as a supervisor making sure people are actually working, you're a bad supervisor. People want to be productive by and large. Especially when you're talking about someone's career.

Supervisors should be focused on keeping employees happy and able to do their jobs. The idea of servant leaders comes to mind. Management is there to make workers more productive by meeting their needs, handling interpersonal conflicts, procuring resources, whatever. If they're just cracking the whip, there's something fundamentally broken about the work environment.

I had a supervisor at a body shop I worked at for 10 years. He always told us our job is to fix cars, his job is to make sure we can succeed at our jobs. He didn't helicopter or constantly remind us a job needed completion.

Edit: Thanks for the awards folks. Just sharing that occasionally there are managers who don't mangle

'Free Speech Absolutist' Elon Musk Censors Employees, Critics by NeRedditPas in technology

[–]MarcoMaroon 1898 points1899 points 2 (0 children)

That's who Elon Musk is and so many people easily fall in love with him because he's constantly on Twitter or just says dumb shit they relate to.

He's a person, a greedy one, and he is no different from other people aside from having a shit ton of money.

Edit: After seeing some replies, it seems some people are unfortunately lacking in the brains department. Being rich and doing something like donating money doesn't inherently make you a good person the same way that doing something bad doesn't inherently make you a shitty person.

It should not be hard to realize Musk is egocentric and an arrogant man-child. Trying to side with everything he does will NOT make him your friend. He will not like you ANY less than he already does. Grow up and learn to properly measure actions and the things people say.

I hate the "well if you were rich wouldn't you do what he does" argument. Which is stupid. Whoever asks me that is probably about as poor as me, so neither of us have any indication that we would do the same. I can pretend to say I'd be a saint but that's my own measure of myself against what reality will actually be.

Apple sued for not paying New York Apple Store staff weekly by Avieshek in technology

[–]iceph03nix 7815 points7816 points  (0 children)

Throughout that period, Apple only paid wages every other week, and not
weekly — like nearly every other retail establishment in the United
States.

I have never in my life been paid weekly, even when it was a retail job...

Different strokes for different folks I guess lol. But that’s how comedy works.

For example I love Andrew Shultz, Dave Chappelle, Chris rock, the bee, etc. but I don’t really care for Kevin hart, Rogan (as a comedian), etc.

Point is, you don’t have to love all comedy/satire, no one does! But censoring a comedian or satirist for saying something that you don’t like is silly and frankly stupid lol.

Cheers.

I don't think he sold any shares though. He could just take out a new loan collateralized on his Tesla stock now the price of that has gone up... And use that loan to buy the Twitter shares.

Then as the value of those go up, he can take more loans and buy other stuff.

No tax payable at all unless the price of the shares go down substantially and you are forced to wind up the loans.

[–]Cryptolution 32 points33 points  (0 children)

He basically just reallocated his assets so he could gain control over something he wanted.

Yes but this is still a taxable event so it's not without extreme costs involved. You cannot just exchange one asset for another.

So he had to pay quite the hefty realized capital gains tax on the assets he liquidated or traded for that stock.

So I guess the point is he paid up for this ....he must really care about his tweets/ego
