[OT] Talking Tuesday (Tasks): World Building & Creativity

Yes. It is Tuesday. Honest. 100% Tuesday. Definitely.

Okay. First off, quick note on the timeline for this month, because it's slightly different to previous months.

There is a fifth Tuesday this March, and there won't be a Talking Tuesday post this week. That means, the Tasks week lasts two weeks.

So you all have a choice.

You're next month of tasks begins as soon as you update your scores below.

That means if you want an extra week to complete this month's tasks, you have until the fifth April to post your tasks for next month and you can wrap up March until then. If you're all done, or wanna get a head start on April you can post your update and your new tasks below and get kicking on April.

How to join in with the tasks

Each month you have four tasks. Two of these are based on that month's Talking Tuesday posts, the other two, you set yourself based on your own writing aims.

You wanna just write 500 words and get some writing done, great. You want get a movie deal converting your writing prompts into a blockbuster? Great. You want to just read a book about writing? Cool. Whatever you want. That's the idea. They're your tasks to improve your writing. You know what you need. It's a race against yourself, not others.

We're just here for the accountability and support.

This Month's Tasks

Tutoring this month covered the art of world building. There was one quick moment that this guy /u/ArhipelagoMind said...

IPs on the sub are great too for shorter pieces to practice world building. Like, IPs can be wonderful for giving you an easy way to transport to a new place.

This is true. IPs are great for practice your world building. So, your first mod task for this month is to...

  • write a story from an Image Prompt on r/WritingPrompts set in a different world (doesn't have to be alien, just not an reality fiction story).

During our Thinking week we discussed the art of creativity.

There was an oddly specific piece of advice from /u/sevenseassaurus

One of my favorites is to draw a whole bunch of circles–twenty or thirty at least–and then add details to each one to make it a recognizable object. Doesn’t matter how good of an artist you are, just that your pen can get the ideas on the paper. Some people say to give yourself a time limit–”see how many circles you can make into drawings in ten minutes”, or what have you–but I think it works best if you screw the time and focus on filling out every circle instead.

I was trying to think if there was a writing equivalent to this. So I came up with the following. Members on our Discord unknowingly voted for a location and item.

The location and item was: An old tower and a fountain pen.

Your second mod task this week is to:

  • Come up with five different stories that involve a an old tower and fountain pen.

You do not have to have written these stories. But you should be able to describe a rough plot. You have to create five story ideas, not write five stories. If you want to write a bunch of microfics and post them to your personal subs, then I would absolutely love to see that. But, you only have to jot down the ideas by yourself. We work on an honor system here.

Then you have your own two set tasks.

Let us know in the comments below what your tasks are for the month.
