Heartbeat

On this date in 1981, Dalek I Love You released the single "Heartbeat" backed by "Astronauts (Have Landed On The Moon)". The single did not appear on either of their albums, primarily because the band members kept changing so rapidly. The one constant was Alan Gill. David Balfe (future Big In Japan and Teardrop Explodes), Merrick (future Adam and The Ants), Andy McCluskey (future OMD) and Martin Cooper (future OMD) were once members of the group. Merrick was the drummer for this single.

An Adjustment To Society

On this date in 1982, New York hardcore band, Kraut, released its debut LP, An Adjustment To Society. It contained the previously released singles "Kill For Cash" and "Unemployed". While this was a true hardcore album, the band gravitated towards hard rock/metal by their sophomore effort.

Plimsouls

On this date in 1981, The Plimsouls released their self-titled debut LP. They had released an EP titled Zero Hour in 1980. The album had an underground "hit" in "Zero Hour". The band's lead singer was Peter Case who had formerly fronted another Los Angeles band, The Nerves. The Nerves' biggest claim to fame is that they released a single in 1976 called "Hangin' On The Telephone". Yes, this was the same song Blondie later made famous. The Plimsouls would gain some fame in 1983 with the minor hit "A Million Miles Away".

Stray Cats On The Prowl

On this date in 1981, The Stray Cats released their self-titled debut album in England. Three of the tracks, "Runaway Boys", "Stray Cat Strut" and "Rock This Town", were released as singles. Little known fact--Depeche Mode never had a #1 single in the UK or the US.

Dils No More

On this date in 1980, The Dils broke up after performing at the Roosevelt Bar in San Francisco. They were hugely popular in the early days of the California punk scene and released three singles. They also appeared in Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke as the second band in the Battle Of The Bands. The founding brothers, Chip and Tony Kinman later formed the band Rank And File. As far as drummers go, they employed as many as did Spinal Tap. John Silvers, Rand McNally, Zippy The Pinhead and Endre Algover all had stints as Dils' drummers.

Singer Nick Heyward left the band to pursue a solo career and the second Haircut 100 album did not do nearly as well. The rest of the band called it quits after its sophomore effort.

You Can't Hide Your Love Forever

On this date in 1981, Orange Juice released their debut album, You Can't Hide Your Love Forever. It would contain four singles, "Falling And Laughing", "Wan Light", "L.O.V.E. Love" and "Felicity". The album, on the strength of its four singles, would reach the #21 spot on the album charts. The group would make some noise in the UK but never became well known in the US (though "Rip It Up" from the second album received strong college radio airplay in 1983). It was the lead singer who would make the most noise in the United States when he had a hit with "A Girl Like You" in 1994. His name was Edwyn Collins.
