The Trashmen – Bird Call! The Twin City Stomp Of The Trashmen (4CD Box) 1998

The Trashmen were an American rock band formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, in 1962.

The original line-up of the group featured guitarists Tony Andreason and Dal Winslow, bassist Bob Reed, and drummer Steve Wahrer.

Along with Colorado-based contemporaries the Astronauts, The Trashmen have been described as "the

premier landlocked Midwestern surf group of the '60s." The band took their name from "Trashman's Blues", a song written and recorded in 1961 by Minneapolis musician Kai Ray (Richard Caire, 1935–2017), who later wrote songs for the band.

Don Woody joined the group on bass. After Don's friend showed the group a record called "The Trashmen’s Blues" by guitarist Tony Caire aka Kai Ray, Steve decided to call the band "The

Trashmen". The group was primarily an instrumental group, with occasional lead vocals by Steve. Steve began to sing more and more. Tony has occasionally sung lead. Don left the band and was replaced by Bob Reed, picked from an audition. The group gained an interest in surf rock after listening to Dick Dale. A song called "Surfin' Bird" was conceptualized by Steve and was instantly liked by their audience at shows.

The Trashmen's biggest hit was 1963's "Surfin' Bird", which reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in

the latter part of that year. The song was a combination of two R&B hits by The Rivingtons, "The Bird's the Word" and "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow". Early pressings of the single credit the Trashmen's drummer and vocalist Steve Wahrer as the composer, but following a threat from The Rivingtons' legal counsel, the writing credit was removed from Wahrer and transferred to the members of The Rivingtons.

The song was later covered by The Ramones, The Cramps, Silverchair, The Psychotic Petunias, Pee-

Wee Herman, Equipe 84, and the thrash metal band Sodom. It has also been featured in several films, including Full Metal Jacket, Fred Claus, Pink Flamingos, Back to the Beach, and The Big Year.

"Surfin' Bird" was the subject of the episode "I Dream of Jesus" of the television series Family Guy,

sending the song to No. 8 on the iTunes Top 10 Rock songs chart and No. 50 on the UK Singles Chart in 2009. The episode "Rich Old Stewie" included the song played in slow motion.

Though the group continued to release great follow-up singles and an excellent album, their moment in

the sun had come and gone; they disbanded by late 1967/early 1968. They re-formed in the mid-'80s and continued to play locally until Wahrer's death in 1989. The Trashmen are revered by '60s collectors as one of the great American teen band combos of all time, their lone hit exemplifying wild, unabashed rock & roll at its most demented, bare-bones-basic, lone-E-chord finest.

Beyond "Surfin' Bird", The Trashmen experienced limited success. In 1964, "Bird Dance Beat" reached No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and was a top 10 hit in Canada. The group disbanded in 1967. A four-CD box set of their work was released by Sundazed Records.

(P.F.M) Premiata Forneria Marconi: Storia Di Un Minuto 1972 + Cook (Live In U.S.A) 1974

Italy's leading progressive rock outfit of the early '70s, PFM would have remained a purely Italian phenomenon had they not been signed to Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Manticore label. Their sound

was more distinctly rooted in the pre-classical era than that of their Germanic counterparts. In addition to electric keyboards (synthesizers, etc.), they also relied on violin and flute (recorder, actually) as major components of their music. Their name, by the way, was short for Premiata Forneria Marconi, the name of the bakery that originally sponsored them.

Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) (translation: Award-winning Marconi Bakery) is an Italian progressive rock band founded in 1970 which continues to the present day. They were the first Italian

group to have success internationally. The group recorded five albums with English lyrics between 1973 and 1977. During this period they entered both the British and American charts. They also had several successful European and American tours, playing at the popular Reading Festival in England and on a very popular national television program in the United States.

PFM introduced new sounds, such as the synthesizer, to the Italian musical world. They were also

among the first to combine symphonic classical and traditional Italian musical influences in a rock music context. Such innovations and their longevity have earned PFM a place among the most important bands in the Progressive rock genre.

The original core members of PFM were Franco Mussida (guitars, vocals), Flavio Premoli (keyboards), Luciano Dovesi (bass), who preceded Giorgio Piazza (bass), and Franz Di Cioccio (drums, vocals).

They came together in the mid-1960s while playing together as backup musicians for many different Italian pop, rock and folk singers such as Lucio Battisti, Mina, Adriano Celentano and Fabrizio De André. They appeared on many recordings for other artists during this period and quickly established themselves as top players on the Italian scene before forming the group 'I Quelli' (deliberately ungrammatical, roughly translates to 'The Them', or 'Those Guys') in 1968. I Quelli released one album and some successful Italian singles.

Premiata Forneria Marconi was officially formed in Milan in 1970 when the members of I Quelli met Mauro Pagani from the group Dalton. Pagani helped the group expand their sound to include violin and

flute. By this time they were already highly experienced musicians who could play the kind of complex progressive heavy rock played by the leading English and American groups. Their early live performances included songs by groups such as King Crimson and Jethro Tull. Other early influences included Chicago, Ekseption, and The Flock.

The debut recording from Italy's favorite sons of progressive rock. The band had been appearing as

special guests in support of bands such as Procol Harum, Deep Purple, and Yes, in addition to playing several festivals. Their hard work paid off, and the result is this excellent recording. Recorded live in the studio, PFM proved they were every bit as creative and talented as the U.K. bands of the time. Their symphonic prog rock commingles elements of folk, classical, and jazz in a genuine manner.

This is achieved by their transcendent and pliant level of musicianship. "Impressioni di Settembre" and

the two-part "Dove...Quando" demonstrate the band's ability to create rich harmonies with pop-like melodies. The band can also lay it down pretty heavy, as can be heard on the rocking "È Festa," which turned out to be one of their most requested songs.

Storia di un Minuto stands as one of the best progressive rock debuts in history, and along with Per un Amico and Photos of Ghosts, is essential to any serious collection.

COOK (LIVE IN U.S.A) 1974

On the 1974 U.S. tour PFM played concerts with Little Feat, The Beach Boys, The Allman Brothers

Band, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Peter Frampton and Dave Mason. They were a victim of theft just before the concert with Santana on July 25 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle. The stolen items included a 1969 Gibson Les Paul and a Gibson ES-335 (with three pickups, which had "Altaloma" engraved on them) as well as two bass guitars.

1974 concerts were recorded in Toronto, Canada (Convocation Hall) on 22 August, and the Schaeffer Music Festival show in Central Park NYC on 31 August. Tracks from these shows were released as

PFM's final album for Manticore, titled, Cook. The album spent eight weeks on the Billboard 200 chart, and peaked at #154 in January 1975. The same recordings were used with different artwork for the next European album titled Live in USA. PFM reached their biggest American audience when they appeared on NBC's Midnight Special program on February 21, 1975. Their nationally televised performance included "Celebration" and the instrumental "Alta Loma Nine 'till Five".

The Hydes: Self Preservation Insinct Zero 2019

The Hydes were formed around 1993 in Thessaloniki, Greece, inspired by Robert Lewis Stevenson,

''Shadows'', ''Too Late Blues'', ''Rocky Horror Picture Show'', supervised by Edward Hyde & influenced by the hottest stuff of rock'n'roll and bands like The Spades, The Stooges, MC5, The Real Kids, Radio Birdman, Dead Boys, The Only Ones, The Velvet Underground, The Modern Lovers, Johnny Thunders, The Pretty Things, The Outsiders, Q65, The Music Machine, Droogs, The Lyres, The Chesterfield Kings, The Zakary Thaks, The Liberty Bell etc.

Their 1st rock'n'roll strike was ''Big City'' on a compilation tribute to The Pretty Things called ''Not So

Pretty'', which came out in 1995 (Corduroy Records), followed by the EP ''Hard Lovin''' (1997, Swallow It All Records). Their 2nd 7'' ''Out Tonite''/''Sun Won't Go Down'' released the same year via the cool label of Corduroy Records, as well in 1997 The Hydes featuring with a great cover of The Only Ones ''Flaming Torch'' through The Thing CD-comp vol. 20!!

Once again & via The Thing CD-comp vol. 201 (1998), The Hydes covered Martha & The Vandellas'

'63 anthem ''Heatwave''!! In 2002 saw the light of day a double LP compilation ''Standing In The Shadows (A Tribute To The Golden Days Of The Rolling Stones 1963-1967)'' via Corduroy Records, The Hydes pay tribute to the Stones with an outstanding cover of ''Have You Seen Your Mother...''!!!

The first issue of Rumble Skunk 'zine came out in 2004 & The Hydes offer covers of ''Sour Wine'' (Q65), plus The Masters Apprentices ''Wars Or Hands Of Time''. Over the years the band gigged with cool Greek rock'n'oll bands, as well with Radio Birdman, The Cynics, The Electric Prunes, Terry Lee Hale etc.

From the wrong side of town to the wrong side of time: The Hydes - ''Self Preservation Instinct Zero''

Their debut album including 13 original songs, recorded at their own studio (House Of Kicks), by Ghost between 2002-2006, mixed at Cue Productions by Ghost & Slim Chance & mastered at Cue by Yiannis Mavridis. The Press release reads: “From the wrong side of town to the wrong side of time: The Hydes – ‘Self Preservation Instinct Zero‘ LP, on Rumble Skunk Records!!! Out Now!!! Slim Chance (Bass, Vox)
Ghost (Guitars, Vox)
Marine Boy (Drums, Percussion).

So, what we have here is a testimony of the hot Greek garage-punk-roll scene in the 90s through 13
well-worked and well-performed tunes. At least 8 of them really impressed me in a very good and refreshing way! The starter “2” Of Pain” is a fast over-driven powerful punk n’ roll dynamite, Mc5 meets Stranglers meets Stooges meets Ramones maximum powered tune where the slide guitar is played by The Frantic Five’s Captain Κ!

The guitar-driven “Sad City” is a rhythmic song drenched deeply into the Paisley Underground of the 80s. “Alien Need” is a wonderful garagy-punky tune with a killer Farfisa sound by another Frantic Five

member, Dr. Organ! “Bad Nite” simply is a Cool-As-Fuck tune while “Fool Moon” is a haunted nostalgic Rock n’ Roller. “A Promise Is A Promise” is here to remind us the pleasures of Simple Pure R’N’R while the last track “Fightin’ My Last Stand” can simply be described as how a 60s nostalgic couple of notes can be trapped inside of a maximum punk n’ roll nightmare! “Self Preservation Instinct Zero” is an album Not-To-Be-Missed from any Record Collection!
