Walking through one of Oregon's major college towns in late October on a Saturday beginning at around 2pm. Eugene is home to University of Oregon known for their college football team the "Ducks". Eugene is about 100 miles south from Portland, or a 1 hour and 30 minute drive depending on traffic. The population was 171,245 in 2018.

This documentary investigates the high hate crime rates in the city of Eugene, Oregon. The progressive college town has been reported by the FBI to have the highest number of hate crimes in the state, and some of the highest numbers of hate crimes per capita of any city in the United States. Are these numbers truly reflective of the atmosphere in Eugene, or could there be more to these statistics than meets the eye?
This project was created entirely by Karli Olson in partial fulfillment of the thesis requirements of the MA Journalism program at the University of Limerick.

Eugene is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest. It is at the southern end of the verdant Willamette Valley, near the confluence of the McKenzie and Willamette rivers, about 50 miles (80 km) east of the Oregon Coast.
As of the 2010 census, Eugene had a population of 156,185; it is the county seat of Lane County and the state's third most populous city after Portland and Salem, though recent state estimates suggest its population may have surpassed Salem's. The Eugene-Springfield, Oregon metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is the 146th largest metropolitan statistical area in the US and the third-largest in the state, behind the Portland Metropolitan Area and the Salem Metropolitan Area. The city's population for 2019 was estimated to be 172,622 by the U.S. Census.
Eugene is home to the University of Oregon, Bushnell University, and Lane Community College. Several spots within Eugene are believed to be inspiration for locations in The Simpsons. This includes Max's Tavern and the Oregon Pioneer statue on campus. The city is noted for its natural environment, recreational opportunities (especially bicycling, running/jogging, rafting, and kayaking), and focus on the arts, along with its history of civil unrest, protests, and green activism. Eugene's official slogan is "A Great City for the Arts and Outdoors". It is also referred to as the "Emerald City" and as "Track Town, USA". The Nike corporation had its beginnings in Eugene. In 2022, the city will host the 18th Track and Field World Championships.

First we stopped for some tea at Townshend’s Eugene Teahouse. They have 100 different types of tea, as well as kombucha. They have a large menu with green, black, chai and other kinds of tea! We walked along the Willamette river, stopping at many parks including the Skinner Butte Park and the Owen Rose Garden. These parks are all connected by a path along the Willamette River. We went to the Cascades Raptor Center which is a wildlife center with raptors, a group of birds, including hawks, eagles, falcons, owls etc. This is a wildlife hospital and refuge for these injured birds from the Oregon area. We also went to the 5th Street Public Market which a cool thing to do in Eugene, it has many shops, restaurants, cafes in Eugene.

The progressive college town has been reported by the FBI to have the highest number of hate crimes in the state, and some of the highest numbers of hate crimes per capita of any city in the United States. Are these numbers truly reflective of the atmosphere in Eugene, or could there be more to these statistics than meets the eye?

The city is noted for its natural environment, recreational opportunities (especially bicycling, running/jogging, rafting, and kayaking), and focus on the arts, along with its history of civil unrest, protests, and green activism. Eugene's official slogan is "A Great City for the Arts and Outdoors". It is also referred to as the "Emerald City" and as "Track Town, USA". The Nike corporation had its beginnings in Eugene. In 2022, the city will host the 18th Track and Field World Championships.

First we stopped for some tea at Townshend’s Eugene Teahouse. They have 100 different types of tea, as well as kombucha. They have a large menu with green, black, chai and other kinds of tea! First we stopped for some tea at Townshend’s Eugene Teahouse. They have 100 different types of tea, as well as kombucha. They have a large menu with green, black, chai and other kinds of tea! The progressive college town has been reported by the FBI to have the highest number of hate crimes in the state, and some of the highest numbers of hate crimes per capita of any city in the United States. Are these numbers truly reflective of the atmosphere in Eugene, or could there be more to these statistics than meets the eye?

Eugene is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest. It is at the southern end of the verdant Willamette Valley, near the confluence of the McKenzie and Willamette rivers, about 50 miles (80 km) east of the Oregon Coast.
As of the 2010 census, Eugene had a population of 156,185; it is the county seat of Lane County and the state's third most populous city after Portland and Salem, though recent state estimates suggest its population may have surpassed Salem's. The Eugene-Springfield, Oregon metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is the 146th largest metropolitan statistical area in the US and the third-largest in the state, behind the Portland Metropolitan Area and the Salem Metropolitan Area. The city's population for 2019 was estimated to be 172,622 by the U.S. Census.
Eugene is home to the University of Oregon, Bushnell University, and Lane Community College. Several spots within Eugene are believed to be inspiration for locations in The Simpsons. This includes Max's Tavern and the Oregon Pioneer statue on campus. The city is noted for its natural environment, recreational opportunities (especially bicycling, running/jogging, rafting, and kayaking), and focus on the arts, along with its history of civil unrest, protests, and green activism. Eugene's official slogan is "A Great City for the Arts and Outdoors". It is also referred to as the "Emerald City" and as "Track Town, USA". The Nike corporation had its beginnings in Eugene. In 2022, the city will host the 18th Track and Field World Championships.

Eugene (/juːˈdʒiːn/ ew-JEEN) is a city of the Pacific Northwest located in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is located at the south end of the Willamette Valley, near the confluence of the McKenzie and Willamette rivers, about 50 miles (80 km) east of the Oregon Coast.
As of the 2010 census, Eugene had a population of 156,185; It is the second most populous city in the state (after Portland and before Salem) and the county seat of Lane County. The Eugene-Springfield, Oregon metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is the 146th largest metropolitan statistical area in the U.S., and the third-largest in the state, behind the Portland Metropolitan Area and the Salem Metropolitan Area. The city's population for 2014 was estimated to be 160,561 by the U.S. Census.
Eugene is home to the University of Oregon and Lane Community College. The city is also noted for its natural beauty, recreational opportunities (especially bicycling, running/jogging, rafting, kayaking), and focus on the arts. Eugene's official slogan is "A Great City for the Arts and Outdoors". It is also referred to as the "Emerald City", and as "Track Town, USA". The Nike corporation had its beginnings in Eugene. In 2021, the city will host the 18th Track and Field World Championships.
