MinneCulture | The Art Of Defying Gravity

The craft of glassblowing can be extremely demanding. Al Honn has been practicing the art of blowing glass for over forty years. He says artists are often ruled by small windows of time, maybe only thirty seconds, before temperature and gravity start to take over.

“Gravity can take over real fast, and if you’re not blowing things out evenly, it doesn’t have the ability to maintain the form, and defying gravity is kinda what glass is about”

A stout man, with a ponytail halfway down his back, a gray-blond beard, and a light blue t-shirt tucked into his blue jeans, he’s making a glass top hat. Honn’s studio is a shared workspace in a big open room with large furnaces and ovens, all glowing with hot orange, the ambient heat of which, Al says has crackled the coating on his glasses.

Honn works and teaches out of FOCI – the Minnesota Center for Glass Arts in south Minneapolis. KFAI’s Drew Temperante shared this audio profile.

MinneCulture | From Dance to Downhill Skiing, Divya Maiya Goes Viral Across Social Media

Divya Maiya’s viral videos took off in January of 2021 when her partner took a video of Maiya downhill skiing in her teal and gold Sari at a Minnesota ski resort.

“We go skiing a lot here. I ski at Welsh, and I ski at Afton. Most of the weekends and winters we do that. One such day when we already had plans for skiing, I just packed my Sari along with me and then we just shot it.”

Maiya says creating videos for social media has brought together her love for dance and creating content.

“I have been doing a lot of, you know, dance videos, and I love creating for Tik Tok and Instagram. And I’ve been teaching dance for so long in Twin Cities. So this is like, just a passion of mine just to create content.”

24 Hours of Blackness: KFAI’s Annual Black History Month Observance

KFAI has a tradition of celebrating Black History Month each February with a full 24-hour day of programming by KFAI hosts who identify as Black and members of the Twin Cities Black and African Diasporic community. With your help, we also hope to expand the event to include additional community programming scheduled throughout the entire month. This event is to provide a platform for displaying the multitudes of real Black experiences and histories.

Program proposals are reserved for Black people/members of the African Diaspora. If you encompass one of the identities listed and are interested in participating, you can choose to get involved in a number of ways.

Jumondeh Tweh Retires ‘Afrique Nomad’ on Jan. 27

On January, 27, 2022, KFAI’s Thursday 10am music program, Afrique Nomad, hosted by Jumondeh Tweh, will air its last episode.

Jumondeh has been an active volunteer with KFAI since 2014, began Afrique Nomad featuring Jumondeh’s particular blend of Afro-Diasporic styles of music, as an overnight program in 2015, and then gradually sliding into the Thursday morning timeslot.

“It’s time for me to explore this maze of life for new cheese and give space for someone fresh to experience the joys of community radio. Thanks to all of you beautiful wonderful souls who traveled with me through this journey of exploring black music from around the globe. To the homies I enjoyed random convos with in the halls of KFAI, you will be dearly missed. I’ll also miss the free food at pledge drive. Enjoying the conversations that took place on the other side of that thin music library wall. Popp’n in on shows and sharing laughs with some of the dopest hosts/guests. Wishing y’all a fantastic 2022!!!!”
