I'm very pleased that Basic is publishing this, my first political book. I've tried to articulate some principles as calmly as I'm able, in the obvious light of the ongoing national emergency.

We just got the heart-breaking news that our dear friend and hero Richard Rogers has died. No one lived a life of more meaning than Richard, in his work, his family, his friends. He will be missed, of course -- but he will remain a model of humanism.

Pure doctrinaire Marxism, applied , as often these days, to an academic setting. Enjoy it -- I did.

Today at two thirty, I'll start a series of talks for the 92Y about the greatest of all comic writers, Moliere , his inspired translator Richard Wilbur, with side views on Stephen Sondheim and the revival of rhyme in mid-century America. Join us.

On Winston Churchill’s birthday, revisit Adam Gopnik on the politician, a romantic visionary who “had the self-confidence to let the slightly loony inner man shine through the public mask.”

Despite having written a book spurred by the shared birthday of Lincoln and Darwin, I was not aware that Churchill and Twain shared one too. (In their case, many years apart)until the magazine posted these old-- well, vintage -- pieces of mine.

Raul Esparza and Melissa Errico made this a memorable inquiry into Sondheimiana. I kibitzed, but their 'readings' , as male and female "Georges", are sublime.

Thanks Hidge, if I may!! You recall all of us listening to that album, over and over? I'm sure. Still have it. xxx

When I saw the London revue "Side By Side By Sondheim" in 1977, it changed my life. His art goes on changing it. Herewith, some memories, a few criticky scruples, a curtain call of gratitude for his existence.

Some thoughts on the limits of logic in the face of brute contempt for law.

Why open expression matters, as JS Mill argued: “A counterargument should first be summarized in its strongest form. Then, and only then, should a critique begin. This is charitable by name, selfishly constructive in intent.” Via ⁦

I NEVER do this, but just back from a spectacular meal at the astonishingly beautiful Bieberbau restaurant. A one-star Michelin , as good as any two star, and all German wines, ingredients and approaches. If you love food and charm and are in Berlin, go.

Adam Gopnik speaks with Betty Buckley, the actress who played Grizabella in the original New York production of “Cats,” who famously sang the song that became Donald Trump’s improbable sedative.

Another event, this one more conversational than critical , on S. J. Perelman and the new anthology. "Writers’ interest us first as stylists, or they don’t interest us."

And , to make a delightful trifecta, hadn't been aware that I shared a birthday with the other Incomparable, Max, nor had I recalled that I discussed at length here his relation to Sid. So, a good birthday, triangulated between the two.

This makes me happy. On my birthday (!) a chance to offer a few words in praise (and analysis) of one of the most original stylists the New Yorker -- or American writing -- has ever produced, the Incomparable Sid.

This Turkish translation, from an unknown reader, is of something I wrote about the ever-missed Kirk Varnedoe, still my closest friend and teacher. Died on this morning,8/15, in 2003. He lives on everywhere, it seems.
