The Trashy Lingerie store (online, visit Trashy.com) is a Los Angeles institution specializing in handmade and bespoke lingerie and costumes, and housed inside a fabulous Pink Building. They had already closed for the day when we happened to pass by in mid-December, but I did get a snap of one of the front Christmas-themed window displays!
Trashy Lingerie is Located at 402 N. La Cienega Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90048 (Just One Block from the Famous Canter’s Deli)!

On my recent holiday trip to Southern California, it turns out I was just in time to check out a cool site-specific installation, NASA’s Orbit Pavilion, which ‘set down’ at the Huntington Library and Gardens in 2016 and just closed the public on December 31st so it can move on to its next destination. Talk about perfect timing. Over the years, Orbit Pavilion provided thousands of visitors with an opportunity to ‘hear’ more than 20 earth-orbiting satellites as the move across the sky collecting research data on everything from hurricanes to the effects of drought.

One of my favorite contemporary furniture designers is Chris Schanck, and I always look forward to seeing his latest pieces when I attend The Salon Art + Design show each fall. Schanck’s work embraces the tension between dilapidation and opulence, asking us to find unconventional beauty in the imperfect. His contribution to this year’s fair was the Stuffed Shell Chair in a copper finish. Let’s take a closer look at this beauty.

Kehinde Wiley’s new artwork Portrait of a Young Gentleman (2021) is based on Thomas Gainsborough’s painting of the same name, which is commonly known as The Blue Boy (pictured below) which is an icon of the collection at southern California’s Huntgington Library. Blue Boy (1770) follows a tradition of portraiture often referred to as ‘grand manner,’ whose stylistic formula is designed to announce the wealth and status of those who are portrayed.

FaceBook (now Meta) isn’t good for much, other than swiftly bringing about the decline of Western Civilization, but it does offer a handy reminder of everything you’ve done on any given day for the past however many years of your life. How else would I ever call that eight years ago today, Geoffrey and I were bundled up like Eskimos at an art opening of totem-like sculptures by the absolutely legendary musician Help Alpert? I’ve interviewed a ton of famous Rock Stars, but meeting Herb in person did that little thing to me (you know, that little thing). Swoon.

Just when you think you’ve seen every piece of art by Andy Warhol, you discover that the Brooklyn Museum has an exhibit called Revelation, where I saw a bunch of stuff I had no idea even existed — and for Warhol completist like me, that is saying something. This expansive exhibit (on through June 19th, 2022) examines themes in Warhol’s body of work such as life and death, power and desire, the role and representation of women, Renaissance imagery, family and immigrant traditions and rituals, depictions and duplications of Christ, and the Catholic body and queer desire. It’s a must-see for any Warhol fan, for sure. This painting of Pink Knives shares a gallery with many colorful and (of course) repetitive depictions of Knives, Guns and Crosses. Very fun!
