Bees outlast Lakers in double overtime thriller
Bonneville outscored Box Elder 19-12 in the second quarter, but the Bees were able to make up the seven points in the other three periods to force overtime. After a 10-10 extra period, Box Elder was able to escape with a 13-7 advantage in the second overtime to wrap up an 80-74 final.
The Bees were led by Kamryn Peterson, who finished the game with 29 points and five three-pointers. Ashlyn Wight finished the game with 24 points and four three-pointers, one of which was late in the fourth quarter to force overtime. The Lakers were led by Courtnie Porter’s 27 points.
“It was a fun game to be a part of. I was proud of our girls and how they kept responding every time a little more was needed. It was a great team effort.” said Box Elder coach Aaron Dooley.
Vikings take down Knights in tight defensive battle
Viewmont scored 21 of their 39 points from behind the arc as they beat Northridge. The Vikings jumped out to a 26-17 halftime lead, but a poor third quarter had the Knights tie things up. Viewmont battled their way to 39-36 victory with great defense down the stretch.
The Vikings used a balanced attack offensively as five different players hit a three-point shot. Northridge was led by Madison Hosino’s 14 points. Viewmont moves to 1-0 in region play and will look to continue their good start when they travel to Bonneville on Friday.
Viewmont coach Roger Farnsworth commented: “We are figuring out how to play as a team and that playing good defense pays off. We were out of control through the preseason and we’ve made some big changes. We’re looking forward to growing up as a team.”
Grantsville grabs road win over Ogden with late defensive stand.
The Cowgirls outscored Ogden 32-18 in the first period of each half, but the Tigers were able to rally in both the second and fourth quarters. In the end Grantsville was able to knock down five of six free throws in the final minutes while getting key plays from Avery Allred on both sides of the floor to escape with a 50-48 victory.
Kenzie Allen and Ashley Christensen battled, each finishing the game with 21 points although Allen’s came from mostly inside while Christensen knocked down five three-pointers.
“It wasn’t pretty but we made the plays when they mattered most and ended up with a hard fought W. Ogden is a well coached team and they gave us all we could handle.” commented Grantsville coach Megan Vera. She continued, “They are a much better team than their record shows. This will be a good learning experience for our young team and we will look to take those lessons and opportunities and improve on them Thursday.”
North Summit upsets Duchesne in dominating fashion
The Braves entered the game sitting just one spot behind the fourth ranked Duchesne Eagles, but left a tough road battle with a 60-37 victory. North Summit dominated to begin the game, immediately jumping out to a 22-11 lead. They then finished with a similar run to put the game away. Hartlyn Richins, Chezlie Langston, and Hayzlyn Murdock dominated for the Braves inside. The trio finished with a combined 46 points while knocking down only a single three-pointer.
American Fork amazes in win over Pleasant Grove
American Fork edged out a 49-46 despite the Vikings scoring 34 second half points. The Cavemen built a big lead in the second quarter as they took a 13-point lead into the half behind hot shooting performances from Calli Condie and Emily Evans. Their offense struggled in the third period and Pleasant Grove was able to get back into the game. The Vikings offense continued to roll in the final period behind Brooklyn Fely and Chloe Rutter—who combined to finish with 35 points. After a Pleasant Grove three-pointer tied the game with 11 seconds to go, American Fork rallied against a tough defense press to score the game-winning basket. Condie passed a dime to Evans who made an acrobatic left handed layup with a foul to secure the victory.
“We haven’t had a lot of success in close games the past few seasons, so for the girls to give up a lead and still hold on was monumental. The three keys on our board before the game tonight were Effort, Execution, and Energy. We had spurts of all three but when it mattered most we executed just right.” said American Fork coach Jason Herrud on the close victory. “After going 1-21 last season and really having the same group this year, a lot of people didn’t expect too much from us as the preseason started. This group has been resilient and as coachable as you could hope for, they’ve really responded to the ups and downs well.”
American Fork improves to 10-5 on the year and 1-1 in Region 4 play. They will travel to take on Lone Peak on Friday before returning for a three game homestand.
