Manage messages in Message Center

Message Center is a web-based console that lets you view and manage messages quarantined as spam. Depending on the settings the administrator selects, Message Center can also include a list of messages delivered to your non-Gmail inbox.

Message Center is available only for users who do not use Gmail web or mobile apps. Message Center is for users with non-Gmail apps (for example Microsoft Outlook) that get messages routed from Gmail.

To let your users access Message Center, make sure Gmail is turned on in the user's organization.

Gmail users can mark or unmark Spam in Gmail.

Message Center deprecation: Message Center is a web console where Gmail users view and manage spam email messages. Starting October 2019, Message Center and Quarantine Summary will be deprecated. Until deprecation is complete, these features might be available for some Google Workspace users. At some point after October, Message Center will no longer be available and new Quarantine Summary emails will no longer be delivered. You won’t receive a notice before this happens. We recommend that administrators start using the spam management methods described in Manage Spam Messages.

Answers to common questions are in More about Message Center deprecation.

Overview

Message Center displays list views for the following message types:

  • Spam—Displays messages that were marked as spam by Gmail in the last 30 days and that the user did not deliver or delete. Refer to "Manage spam messages," below.
  • Delivered (if enabled by your administrator)—Displays messages that were delivered by the user from Quarantine Summary or Message Center in the last 30 days. Refer to "Manage delivered messages," below.
  • Trash—Displays messages that were deleted by the user from Message Center in the last 30 days. Refer to "Manage messages in the Trash folder," below.

Message Center - Delivered folder

On the left side of the screen, click the folder name (Spam, Delivered, Trash) to display the list of messages for that folder.

Two items appear at the top of all list views:

  • Check the box to the left of the Delete/Delete forever button to select all messages in the list.
  • Use the arrows in the upper-right corner of the screen to move forward and backward through the list pages.

From the list view, search for messages and customize Message Center settings.

Note: Messages are removed from Message Center after 30 days. Messages that were in the Delivered folder will still be available in the user's non-Gmail inbox, because they were delivered there.
Access Message Center

To access Message Center, sign in at https://email-quarantine.google.com/messagecenter with your Google Workspace account username and password. Your username and password are usually used for opening Message Center. If you don’t have or can’t remember your password, contact your administrator.

Search for messages
  1. At the top of any Message Center screen, enter your search term in the search field.

This searches for messages that have your search term in any part of the message: sender, recipient, subject, or message body. Use advanced search operators to search a particular part of the message only. For example, to search for a term in the message subject only, enter subject:[search term] in the search field.

  2. Click Message Center search icon.
Manage spam messages

Viewing spam messages in Message Center allows you to identify any messages falsely quarantined as spam and have those messages delivered to your non-Gmail inbox. This trains the system to identify similar messages as not spam in the future.

To view messages marked as spam:

  1. On the left side of the Message Center screen, click Spam.
  2. Do any of the following:
    • Check the box for one, several, or all messages, and then click Not spam (deliver) to deliver the selected messages to your non-Gmail inbox. You can now view these messages on the Delivered screen in Message Center.
    • Check the box for one, several, or all messages, and then click Delete forever to delete the messages from your system. This doesn't move them to the Trash folder.
    • Click Delete all Spam messages now to delete all messages in the Spam folder entirely. This doesn't move them to the Trash folder.
    • Click a message to view the message contents. In the message view, you can deliver or delete the message, or return to the list view.

Note: Message view has the name and size of any file attachments but the attachments are removed.

Manage delivered messages

Review delivered messages in Message Center to identify any quarantined spam messages, and move them to the Spam folder. This trains the system to quarantine similar messages as spam in the future.

Note: Delivered messages appear in Message Center only if your administrator enables this option.

To view messages delivered to your non-Gmail inbox:

  1. On the left side of the Message Center screen, click Delivered.
  2. Then do any of the following:
    • Check the box for one, several, or all messages, and then click Report spam to move the messages from your non-Gmail inbox to the Spam folder.
    • Check the box for one, several, or all messages, and then click Delete to move the messages to the Trash folder.
    • Click Move all delivered messages to the Trash to move all delivered messages to the Trash folder.
    • Click a message to view the message contents. In the message view, you can delete the message, return to the list view, send the message again, or report the message as spam.

Manage messages in the Trash folder

Viewing messages in the Trash folder allows you to permanently delete any messages from your system or to mark any delivered messages as spam.

To view messages in the Trash folder:

  1. On the left side of the Message Center screen, click Trash.
  2. Then do any of the following:
    • Check the box for one, several, or all messages, and then click Delete forever to delete the messages from your system.
    • Check the box for one, several, or all messages, and then click Report spam. This trains the system to quarantine similar messages as spam in the future.
    • Click Empty Trash now to delete all messages in the Trash folder.
    • Click a message to view the message contents. In the message view, you can delete the message or mark it as spam, or return to the list view.
Add approved contacts

Adding a sender as an approved contact makes it less likely that the system will quarantine messages from this sender as spam. Messages from an approved contact are more likely to be delivered to your inbox. Add approved senders in the Message Center settings.

To add approved contacts:

  1. In the upper-right corner of the screen, click Message Center settings icon, and then click Settings.

    Message Center - Settings

  2. Click Add approved contacts and do the following:
    • Click Add.
    • Enter the contact name and email address.
    • To enter another email address for the contact, click Add another email.
    • Click Add.
