This is a normal post Pardon my ignorance, I know jack shit about music, but
aren't all those instrumental breaks rather than solos?
(, Thu 13 Jan 2022, 10:23, Reply)
This is a normal post OOooooh, you could be starting a bar brawl with that question
as a musician (not necessarily a particularly good one, but I have played a lot of music)

I'd say an instrumental break was a section of a piece where the vocals are absent. It's about a space being made, it's an arrangement tool. A solo is where another instrument fills the space a vocal may normally occupy, the soloist is in the musical spotlight. Is that fair? A great musician can play few notes, play quietly and leave space but totally occupy the musical attention.

I'm quite wary of bass solos, but an instrumemntal break where the focus is on the bass and drums can be devestatingly effective.
(, Thu 13 Jan 2022, 12:04, Reply)
This is a normal post Ah.
In my simple mind, a solo would be just the one instrument or voice.
(, Thu 13 Jan 2022, 15:41, Reply)
This is a normal post You're right, but then solo just means alone or single so it's all about context
so piece for solo voice is that - unaccompanied vocal and then you'd be right.

If a piano or guitar plays backing it'd be accompanied solo voice, not duet for guitar and voice. It's all about where the focus lies. In a big choral work you'll have a soloist who will sing with the rest of the choir providing the backing. If all the voices drop out for a section you can call that an instrumental section, but if a violin were to start playing the melody it'll be a solo violin.

Forgive me going on but honestly your question made me think and I wanted to see if I could make sense of what I've always kind of known but never really thought about properly.

A theory on this one episode.

(, Wed 12 Jan 2022, 21:54, Reply)
This is a normal post Adventure Time is an absolute masterpiece.
I feel it gets overlooked by so many older individuals due to it being passed off as "Just another kid's show" or something that trendy Gen-Z's are into, but it's so much more than that.
The best way of describing it is as a child-friendly show for adults. There's plenty of visual humour and slapstick for everyone to enjoy, but there are so many thematically deep subplots going on throughout the seasons touching on things like morality, loss, narcissism.
It's profound when they start to develop characters like the Ice King and turn him from some wacky baddy in a mountain Fort into one of the most tragic characters you could possibly imagine encountering in a 'Kid's Show'.
It can be a bit of a pain in the arse sourcing all the seasons, but if anyone hasn't given it a go yet, I seriously recommend it.
