Conserving one of the oldest photographs in MoMA's collection | CONSERVATION STORIES
Tarnish is slowly engulfing one of the oldest objects in MoMA's collection, a daguerreotype from 1842 capturing two separate images—the Arch of Septimius Severus and Capitoline Lion in the Roman Forum. Within two years of the invention of photography, Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, a French aristocrat, assembled a team to travel the Mediterranean and make over a thousand images of the region’s cities, people, and ruins. These early daguerreotypes projected images directly onto silver plates, like a mirror imprinting a reflection onto its polished surface. Akin to Polaroids, they were unique photographic objects that offered no convenient method of replication.
In our second episode of Conservation Stories, Lee Ann Daffner, MoMA’s Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Conservator, explores th...

Nick Bubb gives us an overview of the state of wildlife conservation in the world today. He explains why there is still a lot to be done and how governments, companies and citizens need to work together to protect our environment and critically endangered species. Wildlife conservation provides jobs, improves livelihoods and helps to address the effects of environmental and social changes.
Nick Bubb heads up Global Development at Fauna & Flora International (FFI), the world's oldest international wildlife conservation charity. FFI supports a great number of conservation programs in 47 countries, which integrate scientific expertise and local community engagement.
Nick's varied background includes significant time spent as an: engineer, professional ocean racer, sports sponsorship expert and wealth manager. After an expedition to Antarctica in 2012 and seeing the first-hand effects of climate change, Nick decided to leave the world of financial management behind and combine all his skills, experiences & networks, and dedicate himself to environmental causes. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Mellon Foundation Conservator, explores the sensitive chemistry of removing tarnish from early photographic images. “There’s a real art and science to the cleaning,” Daffner explains. “Not only do you have to know the systems and materials and types of deterioration, but you need to know when to stop.”

Saving Earth's Resources | How to Conserve Natural Resources: Water, Air, and Land
Yes, there’s no doubt in the fact that you are supposed to teach your little one everything about maths and science and geography, etc but what’s more important is to educate your child about saving the Earth’s resources because this is something that will come in handy to them once they start growing up.
You see, conservation of natural resources should be more of a part of ethics. Like, your kid is supposed to know that he shouldn’t run the tap while he is brushing his teeth because that way he will be wasting water. On the other hand, your little one should be educated about how he can make the Earth a cleaner place to live in by throwing the garbage in the bins instead of on the roads and streets.
Your child must also be educated on keeping the air clean by preventing air pollution and the causes of air pollution. Long story short, your little one must know about saving Earth’s resources once you start teaching him the other basics of maths, English and other subjects. The best part is that you can make it fun for your child to learn about how to conserve natural resources. For starters, you can make him watch online Youtube tutorials, you can opt for online courses and you can even play different games and read stories to fit the concept in your little one’s brain that he/she is supposed to be a good citizen and add to the Earth’s development.
One of the best ways to teach your child about conserving the natural resources is to buy him a bike and then show him the benefits of opting for a bike instead of a car. You see, these small things and these small practical examples will add a lot to his brain and he will hence understand how the conservation occurs in the first place.

As we lose wild species at an unprecedented rate, we must take action to preserve our critically important wildlife. My career as a wildlife biologist has led me everywhere from the high arctic of
Alaska to the deserts of Africa, and I have seen firsthand many of the threats facing wildlife. There are many challenges to wildlife conservation, but the incredible efforts of biologists to conserve threatened species can give us hope. As a wildlife biologist, his focus has been on bear species and he has primarily worked with polar and black bears for the past 8 years. During that time Wes also has been able to assist on a number of other wildlife conservation efforts for species such as African wild dogs, American alligators, golden eagles, spotted eagle rays, northern elephant seals, American kestrels, etc. His work has taken him everywhere from the Arctic to Africa, and he believes that wildlife conservation is not only essential for the preservation of the world's animals, but also for the continuation of the human spirit. Obscured by a darkened varnish and mounted to a wood panel the artwork is cleaned and the panel removed using both modern and traditional techniques. Using routers, hand planes and scalpels the wood is painstakingly removed form the thin paper in order to facilitate the preservation of the paper via archival mounting to acid-free board.
Employing archival and reversible materials and techniques, Baumgartner ensures that the piece is preserved and stable for generations to come.
**** Note: I mistakenly refer to the painting as "The Assassination of
Aristotle" when in fact the poor chap about to part with his head is Archimedes. ****
