It has been reported previously that Screeching Weasel have been working on new material for a potential 2020 release. With less than one-week warning, Ben Weasel went live on Facebook to report that the new album thought to still being recorded would be released digitally on March 24. This news was extremely well-received by punk fans worldwide who are certainly looking for good news during this time of uncertainty. This is certainly a unique approach for a band of their stature. Ben Weasel and his band comprising of this most recent live lineup has churned out a rather enjoyable collection of tracks to please fans both old and new. The album’s opener “She Ain’t Your Baby” immediately showcases Ben’s signature sneer. This steady straight forward rocker has all the elements of classic Weasel down to the catchy backup vocals. The rest of the album can be broken down by the variety of tempos and rhythms throughout that are synonymous with everything Screeching Weasel. “Back Of Your Head” follows with the classic guitar leads which have defined the band for many years. Tracks like “To Hell With You” takes the listener back to the BoogadaX3 era, both lyrically and pace. Hints of Anthem For A New Tomorrow are present in “Settle In” which would fit on any 90s Lookout Records album. This very accessible standout track could have easily been a radio hit in the 90s. Ben takes a darker approach on various tracks as well. “God Help Us” boasts a very metallic intro complete with palm muting over the verse. The song eventually kicks into standard Weasel gear. The verse is reminiscent of 80s Ramones with soaring vocals over a sharp guitar lead. “Crying Shame” is a dark steady rocker as well. “Dead By Dawn” is one of the album’s heaviest and most ambitious tracks. “Turn It Around” is easily the most fun track on the album and comes through in the performance. This new wave rocker features backing vocals by the legendary Josie Cotton, who Weasel has previously covered on How To Make Enemies and Irritate People. Finally, the band tackles classic Americana on tracks such as “Losing My Mind” and “Problematic.” The former track hints at the Riverdales approach to the 50s golden era of Rock N Roll, with a solid guitar solo in the bridge. “Problematic” has a bouncier feel that is accompanied by strategically placed keys in the verses (review by Jasonic ).

1978 was a fruitful year for punk-rock. Despite the association with the UK, punk also made an impression in Spain. Most of the groups insisted they weren't punks, as did English groups, even The Clash. It is the problem of putting labels on things. Whatever you call it, things happened at the end of the 70s. In the Aliança festival I organised, all the groups played their own music, which was simppe and direct rock, but faster. Yet for the society they were punks. There was no interest in instrumental prowess, but rather the need to play hard, to connect with people, criticise society and establishment a complicity in existing on the margins. At the end of 1977 and through 1978 there were a series of punk festivals in Madrid and Barcelona. On December 4 1977 was the "Festival Punk Rock at the Aliança of Poble Nou", organised by Cuc Sonat, with La Banda Trapera del Río, Marxa, Mortimer, Peligro and Ramoncín & WC?. It was the first punk festival in Spain and the 1,500 tickets sold out. That was followed on January 15 1978 by the "Festival Punk Rock at the Pavelló Municipal d'Esports" in Girona, also organised by Cuc Sonat. Ramoncin had a huge impact due to his appariton in a TV show, but in his next albums he evolued to more hard rock or classic rock oriented albums until 1990 (by Xavi Cot).

In 1990 we put together a group called "Los Dalton". We recorded a demo and an LP at the Norte studios in Portugalete, Bizkaia. Recorded and mastered by Roland Loizaga and Goyo Ruiz, distributed by Basati Diskak. In 1993, as often happens with so many groups, we disbanded. In the year 2012 we met with a new singer and did a small tour, through the north of Spain, reaching Barcelona. We also decided to end that story and start from scratch with another name. We contacted Eneko Arco, drums from Sistema criminal and Zortzen, Jorge Anguita until then drums, he started playing rhythm guitar supporting David Garcia in the choirs who dares with the lead voice and lead guitar, Jose Luis Allende follows on the four strings , and doing backing vocals. "The Barrenos" was the chosen name, it comes from "auger" which is the hole that is made in the rock to put the dynamite and make it explode to remove the mineral, we live, we are and we have grown up on the left bank of the estuary of the Nervión in Bizkaia next to the mines and quarries of our ancestors worked hard.

EL SONIDO DE LA METRALLA

A committed and anti-commercial punk / rock / hardcore sound project that not only looks at the aforementioned EL TRONO DE JUDAS or EL CORAZÓN DE SAPO as influences, but also LA POLLA or TRIGGER are two of its references, especially in many voices. Well, like Evaristo, more than singing Diego angrily spits every word that comes out of his mouth, and where you can notice it the most is in songs like “Kilometers” or “A burst”.

The most current punk rock is based on a constant double bass drum and melodic picks and thus throws the roll of EL SONIDO DE LA METRALLA (you can hear that striking “Double or nothing”, even if rappers and scratchtes are included in the different “Gasolina”) that gives us songs in Spanish and Basque. Among the songs in Spanish we have “Molotov Generación´97” which is an adaptation of the great THE CLASH, with melodic guitars; the version “Malditos Vecinos” by KOJÓN PRIETO Y LOS HUAJOLOTES, which they accelerate and take to their land, and in the rabid “Otra Cruzada” they leave room for a solo by Iker Piedrafita, who also recorded the album in El Sótano (over there have passed BARRICADA or LA FUGA), so you can imagine that "Nothing closer to reality" has a more than decent sound.

In songs in Basque, there are “Free”, very fast-paced, with very present choirs and full of punting, the aggressive and partying “Punk-Rocka” with echoes of NEGU GORRIAK or “Beste bat”, where Diego berrera with that anger so their own in it, and they leave for the end a hidden track, which is nothing other than “Malditos Vecinos” in acoustic version, thus ending the thirty-five minutes of the second album of EL SONIDO DE LA METRALLA, which is when the song ends. rolling in the chain leaves you wanting to listen to it again, always a good sign that things have been done well.

Agh! A fresh chop from the large dusty burning murder island: Cold is the Meat to beat. Perth’s finest flesh purveyors have upped their naughty game here across ten tracks of gleefully haughty punk. Hot and Flustered is somehow at once extremely camp and deadly serious. Ashley’s vengeful, elastic rasp smears menses down the screwfaces of vacuous tastemakers, climate change deniers, perennial street perverts, and of course, ZZ top fans. There’s some surprisingly poignant forays into melody (Beach Photography) and a good grip of sudden tempo fuckery to keep us well and truly hooked. Their signature chubby and defiant riffs under snarky bouncing toms formula extends well to the album form, creating a timely reminder that hate and fear are more than reasonable responses to our hell predicament. Let’s take comfort in collective ridicule. When it’s too hot to pogo because the sky is on fire, Cold Meat will let us writhe around in the dirt like the little piggies we are. (Bryony Beynon)

Kultur Shock is a Seattle-based gypsy punk band which specializes in mixing music like rock, metal and punk with traditional Balkan music. Active since 1996, Kultur Shock combines Balkan folk music with punk, metal and rock. Its members hail from Bosnia, Bulgaria, and the United States. The band has issued as many as 11 albums and had performed over 1,500 shows throughout the United States and Europe. Kultur Shock was signed to Bill Gould's KoolArrow record label from 2001 to 2006 and released three albums for the label: FUCC the INS, Kultura-Diktatura and We Came to Take Your Jobs Away. In 2006 the band formed its own label Kultur Shock Records and publishing company, Kultur Shock Music. In 2011, the band had attended Motovun Film Festival along with Pips, Chips & Videoclips band and performer Nick Cave. In 2014, Kultur Shock released IX their ninth album and sixth collaboration with engineer/producer Jack Endino. The band defines itself as "a live band of blue-collar immigrants".
