Pussycat - Mississippi • TopPop
Pussycat was a Dutch pop group from Brunssum in Limburg led by the three Kowalczyk sisters: Toni, Betty and Marianne. Other members of the band were Lou Willé (Toni's then-husband), Theo Wetzels, Theo Coumans, and John Theunissen. The band had four international hits in a row in the mid-seventies: Mississippi (1975), Georgia (1976), Smile (1976) and My broken souvenirs (1977) and then a series of hit singles in the Netherlands and Belgium. Mississippi was number 1 the Netherlands and in another 15 countries. 'Mississippi' achieved 22 gold records. It is estimated that "Mississippi" sold over five million copies worldwide. Most of Pussycat's songs were written by Werner Theunissen.

Mississippi - It's A Long Way There (LRB song) - 1973
Extraordinary archival footage from the Australian national broadcaster (pop/rock show "Get To Know") of the band Mississippi, from which Beeb Birtles, Graham Goble and Derek Pelicci would go on to form the Little River Band, performing what, several years later, would become the debut LRB single. It would also blow out to an 8-minute album epic that remains one of the greatest Australian recordings of all time. This clip appears never to have aired since its initial broadcast in 1973. No internet mention, Mississippi did not record it... were they saving it up? Did they themselves not realise how good it was? Did the broadcaster understand the significance of what they were sitting on? Comments welcome!

This thundering version of Mississippi Queen, Live in the studio at WITF Pennsylvania, USA shows the band at their peak power. They are sufficiently stimulated for the experience and giving it their all (except the keyboard player, wtf). This version is *much* better than the album version and the live version at NY Pop later in 1970, and is undoubtedly the best version of the song anywhere. This is the Holy Grail of MOUNTAIN relics.
All stoner and doom bands are foam in the wake of MOUNTAIN.
Audio remastered by me to remove some tight-q 500hz and 250hz, soft boost 80-120hz and 5-7k. No added compression.
It sounded worse before, believe me. In all likelihood, this performance was tracked and mixed quick and dirty on TV gear, stored for a decade, duped to VHS, improperly stored for more decades, poorly converted Analog to Digital before a cousin of Leslie's (not verified) uploaded the vid to Facebook where the remaining quality was assassinated. I did my best to remove the honk of the 250hz and cupped mids at 500hz-550-ish, where the keys where resonating loudly and totally dominating the mix. This eq move of mine unfortunately thinned the guitar slightly. It must have been monstrous live. The stringed instruments are both fuzzed by band beating the absolute hell out of the front end of the amps, and also by the peaked inputs of the recording gear, which is why the vocals have gained a perfect amount of velvet distortion. It was mixed *VERY* hot. The kick drum is not present anywhere in the spectrum where it can be made more apparent without messing up the bass tone. I have two decades of experience in commercial studios as a tracking and mixing engineer, but this mastering job was done in ten minutes at home through Logitech headphones and a Bose TV bar speaker. A somehow fitting final insult to the engineering aspect of this this god-like performance by MOUNTAIN.
I hope you enjoy it as much and as often as I do. Please comment below if you would like to discuss any of the following...
This video includes many of my personal interests:
- Les Paul Jr.s
- P-90s, especially those late 60s dog-ear output monsters
- Leslie West
- Stacks of Amplifiers that pose multiple fatality risks
- Teenagers that have no idea what they are witnessing
- Bolivian Marching Powder
- Local TV
