María Elena
María Elena is a Chilean city and commune in Tocopilla Province, Antofagasta Region. According to the 2012 census, the commune population was 4,593 and has an area of 12,197.2 km2 (4,709 sq mi).
History
Maria Elena is named after Mary Ellen Comdon, wife of the first saltpeter refinery office (oficina salitre) manager, Elias Cappelens. Originally, the name of the office was "Coya Norte". Situated on land purchased from the Treasury in 1924, the plant was inaugurated in 1926 with the sodium nitrate extraction system patented by the Guggenheim Brothers, which replaced the Shanks system. Its layout was made on the basis of the flag of the United Kingdom. Together with the former refinery at Pedro de Valdivia built in 1931, they were the largest saltpeter refineries with a combined output of over one million tons per year.
In 1965 both were taken over by the state, through Sociedad Química y Minera (SQM or "Chemistry and Mining Society", which was privatized in 1980. This privatization explains why most people's land and buildings are owned by SQM and not the Chilean state.

The Azores (Portugal) | GoPro HERO 4 | Elena and Max's travel vlog
I did not expect this, but the Azores has won my heart as one of my favourite destinations. It was beautiful and peaceful and I loved every minute of being there! We flew into Ponta Delgada and made a home base at Sete Cidades for 3 days. We visited Furnas and all the hot springs, the Gorreana tea factory and explored multiple trails around Sete Cidades. Next stop was Pico with the intention of climbing the tallest volcano in the Azores. Unfortunately due to weather conditions, it didn't work out (we will be back for you, Pico!). We then took a ferry to Sao Jorge and spent our remaining few days on that beautiful island. Wine, cheese, hiking, canyoning, wine, cheese etc... Aventour Azores canyoning is a must do by the way - we had a blast!! And shoutout to Don Amelia pizza - the pizza is...

I did not expect this, but the Azores has won my heart as one of my favourite destinations. It was beautiful and peaceful and I loved every minute of being there!
We flew into Ponta Delgada and made a home base at Sete Cidades for 3 days. We visited Furnas and all the hot springs, the Gorreana tea factory and explored multiple trails around Sete Cidades.
Next stop was Pico with the intention of climbing the tallest volcano in the Azores. Unfortunately due to weather conditions, it didn't work out (we will be back for you, Pico!). We then took a ferry to Sao Jorge and spent our remaining few days on that beautiful island. Wine, cheese, hiking, canyoning, wine, cheese etc... Aventour Azores canyoning is a must do by the way - we had a blast!! And shoutout to Don Amelia pizza - the pizza is out of this world and so is her incredible hospitality.
The Azores now has a very special place in my heart and I cannot wait to be back!!!

As you can see at the end of the video, we had time to spare. So if you want to go up the Torre dei Lamberti or go into the Arena, you can. Just make sure you watch your times, since ALL THE CHURCHES CLOSE AT 5pm, with a siesta break from 1-1:30.
You can easily see the entire city in one day. We started at the bottom (San Zeno and Castelvecchio) and zig-zagged our way up to the top, ending at the viewpoint (at Piazzale Castel San Pietro) for sunset. A little better planning would reduce the amount of walking we did (we covered more than 30,000 steps), but the town is so small that you can get across the entire thing in about 15 minutes.

Maria Elena Malpezzi-Price
Maria Elena Price is co-owner of ExperiencePlus! bicycle touring company together with her sister, Monica Malpezzi-Price. In 2008 the sisters teamed up to follow their own passion for travel, bicycles and people by purchasing the business founded by their parents in 1972. Today Maria Elena is likely one of the most experienced bicycle tour guides and managers out there (for her age!). She started her bicycle tour leading role as a 5-year-old translator of ice cream flavors for clients on their early Venice to Pisa tours. Since then, she has led tours in more than 10 countries and together with Monica was honored in 2011 as one of the Top 10 Guides in the world by National Geographic Traveler. With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and International Affairs and an MBA from the Leeds School of Business at University of Colorado, Boulder Maria Elena currently manages the business and its development at the Fort Collins office in Colorado.
