  • Flight costs soar as Canadian travellers head back on planes

Although more Canadians are taking to the skies as travel measures ease, airfare prices are also soaring with them, with prices reaching new highs not seen even before the pandemic. The aviation data supplier, Cirium, says between July of 2019 and July of 2021, the average price of a round-trip ticket within Canada went up by almost $100, to $532 plus taxes. Cirium says there's pent-up demand, but only half as many seats available, because Canadian airlines are still offering fewer flights and using smaller planes. Ross Lord explains why the cost of flying is getting more expensive, and when there might be some relief. • Global air travel expected to not recover before 2024 | IATA

Global air travel is recovering more slowly than expected and will take until 2024 to return to pre-pandemic levels, the trade association for the airline industry said Tuesday. The International Air Transport Association pushed back its prediction by one year due to the slow containment of the outbreak in the US and developing countries. The industry is seeing a rebound from the depths of the shutdowns in April, but the bad new is that any increase "is barely visible," IATA chief economist Brian Pearce said Tuesday during an online briefing for journalists. Air travel is not rebounding along with rising levels of business confidence in Europe, the U.S., and China. #IATA #GlobalAirTravel #airlinesnews #airlinesupdates #airlinestopnews #airlinesfacts Traffic was down 86.5 percent in June ...

  • La Palma volcano: Drone video captures stunning lava flow as volcanic dust disrupts air travel

Drone footage released by Spain’s Geological and Mining Institute on Sunday showed red-hot lava streams flowing from La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano. The video was released as the country’s airport authority, Aena, announced that volcanic dust was disrupting air travel to and from the island, which is part of Spain’s Canary Islands. Aena said the airport remains open, but local airline Binter has been forced to cancel all of its flights. Nearly half of all flights into the island have also been cancelled, it said. The president of the Canary Islands said Sunday that there is no immediate end in sight to the eruption that has caused chaos on La Palma since it began about a month ago. #IATA #GlobalAirTravel #airlinesnews #airlinesupdates #airlinestopnews #airlinesfacts Traffic was down 86.5 percent in June from the same month a year ago, compared with a drop of 94.1 percent in April, measured as revenue passenger kilometers, or the distance traveled by all revenue-generating passengers. That improvement is nowhere near the increase in business confidence. China is bouncing back more than some other places, while an upturn in the US has been knocked back by the recent upsurge in COVID-19 cases in a number of states. Besides renewed outbreaks, travel is also being held back by weak consumer confidence and constrained travel budgets at companies that are struggling. Despite parking many of their planes, airlines are struggling to fill seats with enough people to make money. Planes were only 62.9 percent full-on domestic flights around the world, well below levels at which airlines make money, and an abysmal 38.9 percent for international travel. The U.S. is seeing more coronavirus cases after some states moved to lift restrictions on public life and business. The summer vacation season in Europe has seen more people move around and a rise in cases in Germany, which had earlier done better than many other countries in mitigating the outbreak. The head of the Robert Koch Institute there expressed concern over the rise in cases. Germany issued a travel warning for three regions in Spain and the U.K. has imposed a 14-day quarantine for travelers returning from Spain, a popular holiday destination. Meanwhile, India is all set to resume international flight operations as the country established individual bilateral bubbles with France, Germany, and the US that will allow airlines of each country in the pact to operate international flights. A similar arrangement with the UK will soon be permitted. Air France will be operating 28 flights between Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Paris from July 18 to August 1. American carrier United Airlines will be flying 18 flights between India and the US from July 17 to 31. United Airlines is flying a daily flight between Delhi and Newark and a thrice-a-week flight between Delhi and San Francisco. India is planning to establish a bubble with the UK soon under which there would be two flights per day between Delhi and London. A request has come from Germans and arrangement with Lufthansa has been sealed. An air bubble is a bilateral arrangement with a set of regulations and restrictions in which the carriers of the two countries can operate international flights. #IATAchiefEconomistBrianPearce
