Athens v.s. Sparta: Ancient Greece's Most Famous Rivalry | The Spartans | Timeline
The Spartans chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most extreme civilisations the world has ever witnessed. A civilization that was founded on discipline, sacrifice and frugality where the onus was on the collective and the goal was to create the perfect state, and the perfect warrior. Classical historian Bettany Hughes reveals the secrets and complexities of everyday Spartan life: homosexuality was compulsory, money was outlawed, equality was enforced, weak boys were put to death and women enjoyed a level of social and sexual freedom that was unheard of in the ancient world. It was a nation of fearsome fighters where a glorious death was treasured. This can be aptly demonstrated by the kamikaze last stand at Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his warriors fought with swords, hands...

Why You Wouldn't Survive Life In Ancient Greece
Today, when we think about Ancient Greece we think about great philosophers like Socrates and Plato and the birthplace of democracy. We also think about great city-states like Athens and Sparta.
Hollywood has also made movies about ancient Greece and its city-states with films like "300" and "300: Rise of An Empire" that fictionalizes the Greco-Persian Wars. The films highlight the heroic deeds of the 300-strong Spartan army against the giant force of the Persian Empire. But ancient Greece was more than just great philosophers and brave soldiers -- it was actually a harsher time when the majority of us modern folks wouldn’t survive. Here are the details.

Immediately following this period was the beginning of the Early Middle Ages and the Byzantine era.[1] Included in ancient Greece is the period of Classical Greece, which flourished during the 5th to 4th centuries BC. Classical Greece began with the repelling of a Persian invasion by Athenian leadership. Because of conquests by Alexander the Great of Macedonia, Hellenistic civilization flourished from Central Asia to the western end of the Mediterranean Sea.

This can be aptly demonstrated by the kamikaze last stand at Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his warriors fought with swords, hands and teeth to fend off the Persian invaders and show the rest of the world what it meant to be Spartan. Programme two explores the bitter rivalry between Sparta and Athens and their startlingly different views of women. They were two cities with totally opposed views of the 'good life'. For Athens, Sparta was a frightening place that turned its children into fighting machines. But worse still were Sparta's women: liberated, independent, opinionated, they took an active part in sport, raced horses and chariots, celebrated nudity and wielded power in the absence of their men. They were an affront to Athenian notions of femininity. When war between Sparta and Athens finally came, it raged for decades and split the Greek world. Until, on the island of Sphacteria, the reputation of Sparta's famed warriors for fearlessness was shockingly undermined. It cannot lay claim to the philosophers or artists of Athens but Sparta contributed as much to western civilisation as Athens did. Indeed it was Sparta, not Athens that was the first city to offer citizenship to its inhabitants. To many, the ideals formed 2500 years ago in Sparta can be seen as a fore-runner of modern-day totalitarianism. By setting out to create a perfect society protected by perfect warriors, Sparta made an enemy of change. A collapsing birth-rate, too few warriors, rebellious slaves, and outdated attitudes to weaponry and warfare combined to sow the seeds of Sparta's destruction. Eventually the once great warrior state was reduced to a stop for Roman tourists who came to view the bizarre sado-masochistic rituals. Documentary first broadcast in 2003.

In this video, you'll see everything you need to know about how Greeks lived during the golden age.
We start with a brief overview of how Greece came to be and some of the misconceptions about its formation. Following this, we get to know the people of ancient Greece, through their love of leisure. This favorite pastime is heavily reliant upon a busy open air market called the Agora.
Moving away from the agora briefly, we explore the theatre experience. The theatre was a popular hobby of thousands of Greeks. Moving back to the Agora, we bump into Socrates.
Socrates is an excellent vessel for knowledge in more than one way. Through his unusual mannerisms and fashion sense, we learn how Greeks dressed at the time. His wife emerges and models some women's clothing. This bores Socrates, so he suggests an adventure to the Olympic Games.
Getting to the Olympics is easier said than done. We'll really need to figure out how to get there as Olympia is on the other side of Greece, a 6 day walk. This leads to the few transportation options we have: horses, donkeys and boats.
Whilst walking is the easiest option, it's slow and incredibly dangerous for a number of reasons. Greek pirates are a huge one.
Spending the day on the farm is far more relaxing. Most Greeks were attached to farms in one way or another, so this is an important segment. It leads nicely into foods and beverages that were consumed in Ancient Greece.
Next up is houses. How they were designed: interior and exterior. Another important thing to note is how the household was structured. It encompassed everyone, including domestic helpers (sIaves).
There were a few groups that had a hard time in Greece. Women were one of them. It wasn't just social expectations that made life challenging for Greek women. Death was also something they had to deal with far too frequently.
Premature death was prominent in all of the ancient world. Religious beliefs (mythology) helped guide Greeks through the process. There will be separate videos on mythology as it's far to broad of a subject to address in this video. Enjoy the documentary!

Best Documentary 2016 The Most Amazing Lost Places On Earth Ever
Ancient Greece was a civilization belonging to a period of Greek history that lasted from the Archaic period of the 8th to c. 5th centuries BC to the end of antiquity (c. 600 AD). Immediately following this period was the beginning of the Early Middle Ages and the Byzantine era.
Included in ancient Greece is the period of Classical Greece, which flourished during the 5th to 4th centuries BC. Classical Greece began with the era of the Persian Wars. Because of conquests by
Alexander the Great of Macedonia, Hellenistic civilization flourished from Central Asia to the western end of the Mediterranean Sea.
Classical Greek culture, especially philosophy, had a powerful influence on the Roman Empire, which carried a version of it to many parts of the Mediterranean Basin and Europe. For this reason Classical Greece is generally considered to be the seminal culture which provided the foundation of modern Western culture and is considered the cradle of Western civilization
In the 8th century BC, Greece began to emerge from the Dark Ages which followed the fall of the Mycenaean civilization. Literacy had been lost and Mycenaean script forgotten, but the Greeks adopted the Phoenician alphabet, modifying it to create the Greek alphabet. From about the 9th century BC written records begin to appear.
Greece was divided into many small self-governing communities, a pattern largely dictated by Greek geography: every island, valley and plain is cut off from its neighbors by the sea or mountain ranges.
The Lelantine War (c. 710 – c. 650 BC) is the earliest documented war of the ancient Greek period. It was fought between the important poleis (city-states) of Chalcis and Eretria over the fertile Lelantine plain of Euboea. Both cities seem to have suffered a decline as result of the long war, though Chalcis was the nominal victor.
A mercantile class arose in the first half of the 7th century, shown by the introduction of coinage in about 680 BC. This seems to have introduced tension to many city-states.
The aristocratic regimes which generally governed the poleis were threatened by the new-found wealth of merchants, who in turn desired political power. From 650 BC onwards, the aristocracies had to fight not to be overthrown and replaced by populist tyrants. This word derives from the non-pejorative Greek τύραννος tyrannos, meaning 'illegitimate ruler', and was applicable to both good and bad leaders alike
