Since 1916, the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station has been a leading research center for the U.S. sheep industry and other industry partners like the Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, and University Extension.
Research leader Dr. J. Brett Taylor said there’s a good reason why the USDA ARS Research Center was built near Dubois, Idaho with an emphasis on sheep genetics with a range interface.
“The producers got together, and they were able to work with the U.S. government to get the sheep station established to look at developing breeds that were most suited for these types of ecosystems,” said Taylor. “Mainly the sagebrush ecosystems and sub-alpine that we see in the distance to meet their production goals, to meet their livelihood goals, and to better serve the consumer. That was 100 years ago but not much has changed since.”
Today he said a lot of the focus is still on genetics, but with a more modern approach.
“Instead of looking more at the quantitative component where we’re looking at the visual look of that particular animal, now we have new genetic techniques that actually allow us to dig deeper to be more precise in what we’re developing,” said Taylor. “We’re still into breed development. The U.S. Sheep Experiment Station developed the Columbia, the Targhee and the Polypay breeds. We’re still in the business of developing composite breeds that better serve the producers and consumers.”
Developing grazing strategies that not only benefit livestock like sheep but that also good for wildlife species like sage grouse and their habitat is a top priority at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station.
“This is sage grouse habitat; prime sage grouse habitat. Ever since the mid-60’s, especially up in the 70’s, we began monitoring sage grouse numbers. Basically, through their leks or where they mate each spring. So, we have that long term and rich history of monitoring. That allows us to then go back and look at how grazing affects that,” said Taylor.

República de Colombia ), is a country situated in the northwest of South America, bordered to the northwest by Panama; to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; and it shares maritime limits with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is a unitary, constitutional republic comprising thirty-two departments.
The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization ultimately creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada, with its capital at Bogotá. Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886.Panama seceded in 1903.

Columbia sheep
TheColumbia is one of the first breeds of sheep developed in the United States. The product of USDA and university research, it was intended to be an improved breed specially built for the Western ranges of the country (where the majority of sheep raising takes place). Beginning in 1912 in Laramie, Wyoming, Lincoln rams were crossed with Rambouillet ewes. In 1918, the foundation flock was moved to the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station near Dubois, Idaho, for further refinement. Today's Columbia is a popular breed, with heavy, white fleeces and good growth characteristics. It is one of the larger breeds, and is often used for cross breeding in commercial western flocks.
Characteristics
Adult rams weigh between 275 and 400 lb (125 and 181 kg), while females weigh between 175 and 300 lb (79 and 136 kg). An average fleece from an ewe weighs from 10 to 16 lb (4.5 to 7.3 kg) with a yield of 45 to 55%. The staple length of the wool ranges from 3.5 to 5 in (8.9 to 12.7 cm). The wool is classified as medium wool with a spin count of 50s to 60s. The wool varies from 31.0 to 24.0 microns.

Since 1916, the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station has been a leading research center for the U.S. sheep industry and other industry partners like the Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, and University Extension.
Research leader Dr. J. Brett Taylor said there’s a good reason why the USDA ARS Research Center was built near Dubois, Idaho with an emphasis on sheep genetics with a range interface.
“The producers got together, and they were able to work with the U.S. government to get the sheep station established to look at developing breeds that were most suited for these types of ecosystems,” said Taylor. “Mainly the sagebrush ecosystems and sub-alpine that we see in the distance to meet their production goals, to meet their livelihood goals, and to better serve the consumer. That was 100 years ago but not much has changed since.”
Today he said a lot of the focus is still on genetics, but with a more modern approach.
“Instead of looking more at the quantitative component where we’re looking at the visual look of that particular animal, now we have new genetic techniques that actually allow us to dig deeper to be more precise in what we’re developing,” said Taylor. “We’re still into breed development. The U.S. Sheep Experiment Station developed the Columbia, the Targhee and the Polypay breeds. We’re still in the business of developing composite breeds that better serve the producers and consumers.”
Developing grazing strategies that not only benefit livestock like sheep but that also good for wildlife species like sage grouse and their habitat is a top priority at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station.
“This is sage grouse habitat; prime sage grouse habitat. Ever since the mid-60’s, especially up in the 70’s, we began monitoring sage grouse numbers. Basically, through their leks or where they mate each spring. So, we have that long term and rich history of monitoring. That allows us to then go back and look at how grazing affects that,” said Taylor.

Las obras de metro en la línea 9 empezaron el 1 de agosto y se espera que finalicen el 31 de agosto. Tienen el objetivo de modernizar y mejorar la accesibilidad en la estación de Duque de Pastrana.
El SE726 es un servicio de bus ofrecido por la EMT, que hace el trayecto Colombia - Plaza de Castilla, pasando por las estaciones de Pío XII y Duque de Pastrana en su trayecto. También se pueden usar otras líneas de EMT como:
- De Plaza de Castilla a Duque de Pastrana: líneas 70, 107, 129.
- De Pío XII a Colombia: líneas 16, 29.

Since 1916, the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station has been a leading research center for the U.S. sheep industry and other industry partners like the Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, and University Extension.
Research leader Dr. J. Brett Taylor said there’s a good reason why the USDA ARS Research Center was built near Dubois, Idaho with an emphasis on sheep genetics with a range interface.
“The producers got together, and they were able to work with the U.S. government to get the sheep station established to look at developing breeds that were most suited for these types of ecosystems,” said Taylor. “Mainly the sagebrush ecosystems and sub-alpine that we see in the distance to meet their production goals, to meet their livelihood goals, and to better serve the consumer. That was 100 years ago but not much has changed since.”
Today he said a lot of the focus is still on genetics, but with a more modern approach.
“Instead of looking more at the quantitative component where we’re looking at the visual look of that particular animal, now we have new genetic techniques that actually allow us to dig deeper to be more precise in what we’re developing,” said Taylor. “We’re still into breed development. The U.S. Sheep Experiment Station developed the Columbia, the Targhee and the Polypay breeds. We’re still in the business of developing composite breeds that better serve the producers and consumers.”
Developing grazing strategies that not only benefit livestock like sheep but that also good for wildlife species like sage grouse and their habitat is a top priority at the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station.
“This is sage grouse habitat; prime sage grouse habitat. Ever since the mid-60’s, especially up in the 70’s, we began monitoring sage grouse numbers. Basically, through their leks or where they mate each spring. So, we have that long term and rich history of monitoring. That allows us to then go back and look at how grazing affects that,” said Taylor.

Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886.Panama seceded in 1903.

Hoy visitaremos las estaciones de Colombia y Plaza de Castilla para ver las maniobras de los trenes de línea 9 de metro, debido al corte que afecta a las estaciones de Pío XII y Duque de Pastrana. También viajaremos en el SE726, servicio especial que proporciona la EMT Madrid para cubrir el trayecto en obras.
Las obras de metro en la línea 9 empezaron el 1 de agosto y se espera que finalicen el 31 de agosto. Tienen el objetivo de modernizar y mejorar la accesibilidad en la estación de Duque de Pastrana.
El SE726 es un servicio de bus ofrecido por la EMT, que hace el trayecto Colombia - Plaza de Castilla, pasando por las estaciones de Pío XII y Duque de Pastrana en su trayecto. También se pueden usar otras líneas de EMT como:
- De Plaza de Castilla a Duque de Pastrana: líneas 70, 107, 129.
- De Pío XII a Colombia: líneas 16, 29.
