Hi! As you can see, my video is absent of me except for my voice (whoopsie-I was the one behind the camera), so let me introduce myself: My name is Maddie Goldberg. I am a Junior attending school in Connecticut. I am an active head of the community service and film clubs at my school, as both activities have been my personal passions throughout my 18 years of life.
In this project, I focus on how one may define 'community service', through footage of several projects I have participated in through the 'Hands on Hartford' organization, and brief footage from past service initiatives. I hope to not only display my own efforts towards service, but also to convey that by taking advantage of service opportunities in their local communities, anyone can 'lose themselves' and end up influencing the lives of others in ways they never thought they could.

Instead, she urges people to find a volunteer job that makes them excited and to use their passion to brighten the life of another person.
Jaime Parker is Manager of Programs at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK). TASK is a nonprofit that feeds those who are hungry in the Mercer County area and offers programs to encourage self-sufficiency and improve the quality of life of its patrons. TASK co-ordinates the work of some 3500 volunteers in the Mercer County region, and brings a new dimension to community service in New Jersey.

How can we come together to help our communities? This week on NowThis Kids, we're talking to Emma Macdonald about how she gives back to her community with a revolving fridge.

It takes a group effort to create a nice place to live for an entire community. Everybody has to do their part. Emma Macdonald volunteers at the Fort Greene Community Fridge, a revolving refrigerator that's filled with healthy, free food for families in need. It's maintained by the same community it serves. 'The group who organized it is creating a community amongst ourselves,' Emma says. 'It's a really powerful way of making a little effort.' We're all a part of so many communities that we might not even realize we're in them. That means we have numerous opportunities to chip in and make them fun, accepting, and encouraging places to live. We can each take a look at the issues affecting our communities and identify ways to make things better.
The idea of community service brings to mind some sort of punishment, but giving back means finding innovating community service ideas, especially community service for kids, in recognition of the greater good it will do. Whether it's community organizing, creating community fridge in Fort Greene Brooklyn, NYC, or even coming up with community service projects and community service ideas at home, giving back to people and giving back to the community is one small way we can make our whole world better.

Through my work with hundreds of nonprofits, I’ve helped thousands of people of ALL ages find volunteer opportunities. There really are some amazing ways to give back for people in high school, middle school, college, and more. I’ve heard from so many folks how hard it can be to find community service opportunities for kids. But when you find the perfect volunteer opportunity for you, you can build up your leadership and other skills, make new friends, and have fun - ALL while making a social impact. The volunteer opportunities I share vary from ongoing to one-time projects, and might even be great for a summer program for high school students or other grade levels.

Our society often focuses the benefits of community service on those who receive, more than those who give. Through contributing countless of hours improving the lives of others, Nae Nae has discovered the benefits of doing community service that are often overlooked. Her talk emphasizes how making community service a graduation requirement has enabled students to discover their passions. She aims to convey the message that successfully implementing a service action plan has the power to change everyone’s life for the better—both those who give, and those who receive. Montawan (Nae Nae) Chairatchaneeboon is a 16-year-old junior at International School Bangkok. She is actively engaged in leading many service clubs and activities in the community, including English Service Project, Habitat For Humanity, and Prosthetics Project. She is also involved in the ISB Service Fund, Technology Council, and Choir. She strongly believes in the importance of enriching her local community and aims to encourage others to see the benefits of community service. Community service
Community service is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the public or its institutions. Performing community service is not the same as volunteering, since it is not always performed on a voluntary basis. It may be performed for a variety of reasons:
High school graduation and community work
Many educational jurisdictions in the United States require students to perform community service hours to graduate from high school. In some high schools in Washington, for example, students must finish 200 hours of community service to get a diploma. Some school districts in Washington, including Seattle Public Schools, differentiate between community service and "service learning," requiring students to demonstrate that their work has contributed to their education. If a student in high school is taking an AVID course, community service is needed. Whether American public schools could require volunteer hours was challenged in Immediato v. Rye Neck School District, but the court found no violation.

TASK is a nonprofit that feeds those who are hungry in the Mercer County area and offers programs to encourage self-sufficiency and improve the quality of life of its patrons. TASK co-ordinates the work of some 3500 volunteers in the Mercer County region, and brings a new dimension to community service in New Jersey.

How can we come together to help our communities? This week on NowThis Kids, we're talking to Emma Macdonald about how she gives back to her community with a revolving fridge.

It takes a group effort to create a nice place to live for an entire community. Everybody has to do their part. Emma Macdonald volunteers at the Fort Greene Community Fridge, a revolving refrigerator that's filled with healthy, free food for families in need. It's maintained by the same community it serves. 'The group who organized it is creating a community amongst ourselves,' Emma says. 'It's a really powerful way of making a little effort.' We're all a part of so many communities that we might not even realize we're in them. That means we have numerous opportunities to chip in and make them fun, accepting, and encouraging places to live. We can each take a look at the issues affecting our communities and identify ways to make things better.
The idea of community service brings to mind some sort of punishment, but giving back means finding innovating community service ideas, especially community service for kids, in recognition of the greater good it will do. Whether it's community organizing, creating community fridge in Fort Greene Brooklyn, NYC, or even coming up with community service projects and community service ideas at home, giving back to people and giving back to the community is one small way we can make our whole world better.

Through my work with hundreds of nonprofits, I’ve helped thousands of people of ALL ages find volunteer opportunities. There really are some amazing ways to give back for people in high school, middle school, college, and more. I’ve heard from so many folks how hard it can be to find community service opportunities for kids. But when you find the perfect volunteer opportunity for you, you can build up your leadership and other skills, make new friends, and have fun - ALL while making a social impact. The volunteer opportunities I share vary from ongoing to one-time projects, and might even be great for a summer program for high school students or other grade levels.

Through contributing countless of hours improving the lives of others, Nae Nae has discovered the benefits of doing community service that are often overlooked. Her talk emphasizes how making community service a graduation requirement has enabled students to discover their passions. She aims to convey the message that successfully implementing a service action plan has the power to change everyone’s life for the better—both those who give, and those who receive. Montawan (Nae Nae) Chairatchaneeboon is a 16-year-old junior at International School Bangkok. She is actively engaged in leading many service clubs and activities in the community, including English Service Project, Habitat For Humanity, and Prosthetics Project. She is also involved in the ISB Service Fund, Technology Council, and Choir. She strongly believes in the importance of enriching her local community and aims to encourage others to see the benefits of community service. Hi! As you can see, my video is absent of me except for my voice (whoopsie-I was the one behind the camera), so let me introduce myself: My name is Maddie Goldberg. I am a Junior attending school in Connecticut. I am an active head of the community service and film clubs at my school, as both activities have been my personal passions throughout my 18 years of life.
In this project, I focus on how one may define 'community service', through footage of several projects I have participated in through the 'Hands on Hartford' organization, and brief footage from past service initiatives. I hope to not only display my own efforts towards service, but also to convey that by taking advantage of service opportunities in their local communities, anyone can 'lose themselves' and end up influencing the lives of others in ways they never thought they could.

How can we come together to help our communities? This week on NowThis Kids, we're talking to Emma Macdonald about how she gives back to her community with a revolving fridge.

It takes a group effort to create a nice place to live for an entire community. Everybody has to do their part. Emma Macdonald volunteers at the Fort Greene Community Fridge, a revolving refrigerator that's filled with healthy, free food for families in need. It's maintained by the same community it serves. 'The group who organized it is creating a community amongst ourselves,' Emma says. 'It's a really powerful way of making a little effort.' We're all a part of so many communities that we might not even realize we're in them. That means we have numerous opportunities to chip in and make them fun, accepting, and encouraging places to live. We can each take a look at the issues affecting our communities and identify ways to make things better.
The idea of community service brings to mind some sort of punishment, but giving back means finding innovating community service ideas, especially community service for kids, in recognition of the greater good it will do. Whether it's community organizing, creating community fridge in Fort Greene Brooklyn, NYC, or even coming up with community service projects and community service ideas at home, giving back to people and giving back to the community is one small way we can make our whole world better.

Through my work with hundreds of nonprofits, I’ve helped thousands of people of ALL ages find volunteer opportunities. There really are some amazing ways to give back for people in high school, middle school, college, and more. I’ve heard from so many folks how hard it can be to find community service opportunities for kids. But when you find the perfect volunteer opportunity for you, you can build up your leadership and other skills, make new friends, and have fun - ALL while making a social impact. The volunteer opportunities I share vary from ongoing to one-time projects, and might even be great for a summer program for high school students or other grade levels.

Our society often focuses the benefits of community service on those who receive, more than those who give. Through contributing countless of hours improving the lives of others, Nae Nae has discovered the benefits of doing community service that are often overlooked. Her talk emphasizes how making community service a graduation requirement has enabled students to discover their passions. She aims to convey the message that successfully implementing a service action plan has the power to change everyone’s life for the better—both those who give, and those who receive. Montawan (Nae Nae) Chairatchaneeboon is a 16-year-old junior at International School Bangkok. She is actively engaged in leading many service clubs and activities in the community, including English Service Project, Habitat For Humanity, and Prosthetics Project. She is also involved in the ISB Service Fund, Technology Council, and Choir. She strongly believes in the importance of enriching her local community and aims to encourage others to see the benefits of community service. Community service
Community service is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the public or its institutions. Performing community service is not the same as volunteering, since it is not always performed on a voluntary basis. It may be performed for a variety of reasons:
High school graduation and community work
Many educational jurisdictions in the United States require students to perform community service hours to graduate from high school. In some high schools in Washington, for example, students must finish 200 hours of community service to get a diploma. Some school districts in Washington, including Seattle Public Schools, differentiate between community service and "service learning," requiring students to demonstrate that their work has contributed to their education. If a student in high school is taking an AVID course, community service is needed. Whether American public schools could require volunteer hours was challenged in Immediato v. Rye Neck School District, but the court found no violation.
