Ajit

Ajit, variously spelled Ajith, Agith, Ajay, Aje or Ajeet (Sanskrit: अजित ajita) is a common male given name. It is used in its various forms throughout India and also in Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Etymology

The name is derived from Sanskrit, where its primary meaning is "invincible", "irresistible", "unsurpassed". The literal meaning is "unconquered", from the prefix a- "not", and jita "conquered". It has variously been used to refer to a number of mythological figures, including Shiva and Vishnu in Hinduism, Maitreya in Buddhism and the second of the Arhats in Jainism among others.

Ajit (newspaper)

Ajit (Daily Ajit) is the a Punjabi language daily newspaper, published from Jalandhar, India. The newspaper is run by Sadhu Singh Hamdard trust. The newspaper was founded in 1941 in Urdu language. Veteran journalist and ex-Rajya Sabha member, Dr. Barjinder Singh Hamdard, is the current Editor-in-Chief of this newspaper. In 2007-08, it claimed a circulation of more than 3.33 Lakh.

History

Ajit started its circulation with an Urdu language weekly edition in 1941 from Shaheed Sikh Missionary College Amritsar. Ajit Singh Ambalvi was its first editor. In November 1942, it became daily newspaper and began printing from Lahore. After independence it moved its base to Jalandhar and Sadhu Singh Hamdard became its editor. In 1955, its name was changed to Ajit Patrika and language changed from Urdu to Punjabi. Later in 1957, its name was changed back to Ajit. After Hamdard's death in 1984, its present editor Barjinder Singh Hamdard took the charge. Barjinder Singh Hamdard was earlier editor of Punjabi Tribune. In 1996, it started a Hindi edition titled "Ajit Samachar" and in 2002 started its website www.ajitjalandhar.com.
