Federal Bureau of Investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States, which simultaneously serves as the nation's prime Federal law enforcement organization. Operating under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Justice, FBI is concurrently a member of the U.S. Intelligence Community and reports to both the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence. A leading U.S. counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and criminal investigative organization, FBI has jurisdiction over violations of more than 200 categories of federal crimes.

Although many of FBI's functions are unique, its activities in support of national security are comparable to those of the British MI5 and the Russian FSB. Unlike the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which has no law enforcement authority and is focused on intelligence collection overseas, FBI is primarily a domestic agency, maintaining 56 field offices in major cities throughout the United States, and more than 400 resident agencies in lesser cities and areas across the nation. At an FBI field office, a senior-level FBI officer concurrently serves as the representative of the Director of National Intelligence.

Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau

The Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau (MJIB; Chinese: 法務部調查局; pinyin: Fǎwù Bù Diàochá Jú) is a criminal-investigation and counter-intelligence agency reporting under the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of China. The agency is run by the Director-General which is accountable to the cabinet level minister, Minister of Justice.

History

The Bureau of Investigation was established in 1927. Initially, it was called Bureau of Investigation and Statistics subordinated to the Central Executive Committee of Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT). During that time, it was nicknamed "Zhong-Tong" (zh:中統), meaning Central-Statistics. In 1930s and 1940s, it carried the responsibilities of intelligence-gathering and counter-intelligence. By 1949 the bureau was formally established into a government agency and assigned to the Ministry of Interior(內政部). In 1956, the agency was transferred to the Ministry of Judicial Administration(zh:司法行政部) and took over most of the counter-intelligence duty in Taiwan. In 1980 the agency was re-designated to the current Ministry of Justice(法務部).

California Bureau of Investigation

The Bureau of Investigation (BI) is a law enforcement bureau of California's Office of the Attorney General that provides expert investigative services to assist local, state, and federal agencies in major criminal investigations ranging across the state.

The BI was formerly named the "California Bureau of Investigation" as an agency of the California Department of Justice. The official name was changed to the Bureau of Investigation and Intelligence (BII) in 2009. It was later merged with parts of the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement to create the Bureau of Investigation on February 17, 2012. The BI commonly works on a variety of cases, including murder and narcotics trafficking.

The BI can be assigned at the discretion of the State Attorney General; performs investigations on public land for incidents that occur outside of local jurisdictions or can be requested by local authority for various reasons (e.g. areas that are too small to have local detectives or cross-jurisdiction coordination of major crimes).
