We took the Red Jet ferry from Southampton (UK) to Cowes in the Isle of Wight to see what the famous yachting town offered. Cowes is the centre point for the Cowes week yacht regatta which brings thousands of visitors to the small Island. It has many pubs catering to a variety of tastes from traditional to gastro and during the summer people, there is a real party vibe as people spill out onto the streets and beer gardens.
This trip was out of season however during the short period of time spent on the island I was able to explore the shops in West Cowes, the Floating Bridge, East Cowes promenade, Osbourne House and Queen Victoria's church - St. Milfred's in Whippingham as well as several pubs on the route!

Whilst the Extreme Racing series was entertaining the crowds at this years' Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, the supertanker hit a yacht which was then dismasted as its spinnaker sail was snagged by the ship's anchor.
The Marine Knutsen supertanker was being guided by a pilot boat into Southampton docks and was making its presence known by repeatedly sounding its horn. By one yacht didn't seem to give itself enough time to clear the massive boat and was hit before having its mast and rigging ripped off when one of its sail got caught in the supertankers anchor.
The yacht was quickly attended by several vessels offering assistance. It's not know if anyone was hurt.

Cowes
Coordinates: 50°45′34″N 1°18′01″W / 50.7595°N 1.3002°W / 50.7595; -1.3002
Cowes (/kaʊz/;) is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry.
The population was 9,663 in the 2001 census, a figure that doubles during the regatta in early August. The population at the 2011 Census was 10,405.
Leland's 19th century verses described the towns poetically as "The two great Cowes that in loud thunder roar, This on the eastern, that the western shore".
Cowes has been seen as a home for international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. The town gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which occurs annually in the first week of August. Later on in the summer, powerboat races are held.
Much of the town's architecture is still heavily influenced by the style of ornate building which Prince Albert popularised.

Whilst the Extreme Racing series was entertaining the crowds at this years' Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, the supertanker hit a yacht which was then dismasted as its spinnaker sail was snagged by the ship's anchor.
The Marine Knutsen supertanker was being guided by a pilot boat into Southampton docks and was making its presence known by repeatedly sounding its horn. By one yacht didn't seem to give itself enough time to clear the massive boat and was hit before having its mast and rigging ripped off when one of its sail got caught in the supertankers anchor.
The yacht was quickly attended by several vessels offering assistance. It's not know if anyone was hurt.

We took the Red Jet ferry from Southampton (UK) to Cowes in the Isle of Wight to see what the famous yachting town offered. Cowes is the centre point for the Cowes week yacht regatta which brings thousands of visitors to the small Island. It has many pubs catering to a variety of tastes from traditional to gastro and during the summer people, there is a real party vibe as people spill out onto the streets and beer gardens.
This trip was out of season however during the short period of time spent on the island I was able to explore the shops in West Cowes, the Floating Bridge, East Cowes promenade, Osbourne House and Queen Victoria's church - St. Milfred's in Whippingham as well as several pubs on the route!

Coordinates: 50°45′34″N 1°18′01″W / 50.7595°N 1.3002°W / 50.7595; -1.3002
Cowes (/kaʊz/;) is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The two towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferry.
The population was 9,663 in the 2001 census, a figure that doubles during the regatta in early August. The population at the 2011 Census was 10,405.
Leland's 19th century verses described the towns poetically as "The two great Cowes that in loud thunder roar, This on the eastern, that the western shore".
Cowes has been seen as a home for international yacht racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. The town gives its name to the world's oldest regular regatta, Cowes Week, which occurs annually in the first week of August. Later on in the summer, powerboat races are held.
Much of the town's architecture is still heavily influenced by the style of ornate building which Prince Albert popularised.
