Cliff-side vineyards, gallons of wine aged underwater, and family traditions, we hit the road to discover what makes Croatian wine unique.
The seaside region of Peljesac is home to many unique, indigenous grape varieties, producing some world-renowned and accredited wines!
This area is ideal for grape production as it receives a unique amount of sunlight that reflects off the sea, land, and clouds. The cool breeze coming off the sea contributes to a cool, dry climate, helping the grapes grow in stony, hard soil.
Famous Croatian varieties grown along the Peljesac Penninsula include:
- Dingac
- Plavac Mali
- Posip
With many local wineries in the area, this region is well worth a visit!

Welcome to Pelješac Peninsula and Dubrovnik, in Dalmatia! In the third part of our Cracking Croatian Wine's Dalmatia series, we visit the old guards of Plavac Mali: Miloš Winery, Bura-Mrgudic Winery, and Kiridžija Winery, plus a strong newcomer Korta Katarina Winery. It was hard to cherry-pick the Croatian wine producers to feature in this episode, and we've selected these four because they make four distinctly different styles of Plavac Mali wines. If you would like to understand the sensory merits of Plavac Mali, these producers should not be missed.
As we travel along the Dalmatian coast, we also highlight other points of interest that you can add to your Dalmatia travel's itinerary, including the first two Croatian wine appellations, Dingač and Postup; the villages of Ston and Mali Ston, and Unesco World Heritage Site, Dubrovnik Old Town. Parts of the popular HBO series "Game of Thrones" was filmed in Dubrovnik.
After soaking up the Dalmatia sun-powered juice of Pelješac, we head to Proto Fish Restaurant, one of the best seafood restaurants in the country, and spotlight the seafood delights around the "Pearl of the Adriatic".

Visiting the winery built underwater, we travel to one of the most breathtaking wineries I’ve been to this year.
➡️ Zlatan Otok was established in the beginning of 1986, and started selling wine in 1989.
Their primary vineyards are located on the southern slopes of the island Hvar, Croatia and on Makarska vineyards below Mt Biokovo, as well as the vineyard in Šibenik which is owned by their family business Vinoline.
Zlatan Otok has achieved success in various national, international competitions and exhibitions to include: Vinovita Zagreb, Split GAST, WINE Ljubljana, Zurich, Bordeaux, Decanter, Sabatine, Nürnberg, Paris, and many, many more.

Croatia (
i/kroʊˈeɪʃə/ kroh-AY-shə; Croatian: Hrvatska [xř̩ʋaːtskaː]), officially the Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska, 
listen ), is a sovereign state at the crossroads of Central Europe, Southeast Europe, and the Mediterranean. Its capital city is Zagreb, which forms one of the country's primary subdivisions, along with its twenty counties. Croatia covers 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) and has diverse, mostly continental and Mediterranean climates. Croatia's Adriatic Sea coast contains more than a thousand islands. The country's population is 4.28 million, most of whom are Croats, with the most common religious denomination being Roman Catholicism.
The Croats arrived in the area of present-day Croatia during the early part of the 7th century AD. They organised the state into two duchies by the 9th century. Tomislav became the first king by 925, elevating Croatia to the status of a kingdom. The Kingdom of Croatia retained its sovereignty for nearly two centuries, reaching its peak during the rule of Kings Peter Krešimir IV and Dmitar Zvonimir. Croatia entered a personal union with Hungary in 1102. In 1527, faced with Ottoman conquest, the Croatian Parliament elected Ferdinand I of the House of Habsburg to the Croatian throne. In 1918, after World War I, Croatia was included in the unrecognised State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs which seceded from Austria-Hungary and merged into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. A fascist Croatian puppet state existed during World War II. After the war, Croatia became a founding member and a federal constituent of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a constitutionally socialist state. In June 1991, Croatia declared independence, which came into effect on 8 October of the same year. The Croatian War of Independence was fought successfully during the four years following the declaration.

Croatian wine
Croatian wine (vino, pl. vina) has a history dating back to the Ancient Greek settlers, and their wine production on the southern Dalmatian islands of Vis, Hvar and Korčula some 2,500 years ago. Like other old world wine producers, many traditional grape varieties still survive in Croatia, perfectly suited to their local wine hills. Modern wine-production methods have taken over in the larger wineries, and EU-style wine regulations have been adopted, guaranteeing the quality of the wine.
There are currently over 300 geographically defined wine regions, and a strict classification system to ensure quality and origin. The majority of Croatian wine is white, with most of the remainder being red, and only a small percentage is rosé wines. In 2010, Croatia ranked 30th in wine producing countries with an estimated 50,000 tonnes.
Wine is a popular drink in Croatia, and locals traditionally like to drink wine with their meals. Quite often, the wine is diluted with either still or sparkling water - producing a drink known as gemišt (a combination of white wine and carbonated water), and bevanda (a combination of red wine and still water).

In the third part of our Cracking Croatian Wine's Dalmatia series, we visit the old guards of Plavac Mali: Miloš Winery, Bura-Mrgudic Winery, and Kiridžija Winery, plus a strong newcomer Korta Katarina Winery. It was hard to cherry-pick the Croatian wine producers to feature in this episode, and we've selected these four because they make four distinctly different styles of Plavac Mali wines. If you would like to understand the sensory merits of Plavac Mali, these producers should not be missed.
As we travel along the Dalmatian coast, we also highlight other points of interest that you can add to your Dalmatia travel's itinerary, including the first two Croatian wine appellations, Dingač and Postup; the villages of Ston and Mali Ston, and Unesco World Heritage Site, Dubrovnik Old Town. Parts of the popular HBO series "Game of Thrones" was filmed in Dubrovnik.

➡️ Zlatan Otok was established in the beginning of 1986, and started selling wine in 1989.
Their primary vineyards are located on the southern slopes of the island Hvar, Croatia and on Makarska vineyards below Mt Biokovo, as well as the vineyard in Šibenik which is owned by their family business Vinoline.
Zlatan Otok has achieved success in various national, international competitions and exhibitions to include: Vinovita Zagreb, Split GAST, WINE Ljubljana, Zurich, Bordeaux, Decanter, Sabatine, Nürnberg, Paris, and many, many more.
➡️ More than one hundred awards, medals and recognitions have been given to this amazing winery. This is validation of their passion, hard work, and tradition of wine making on this beautiful island.

➡️ Good vintage (Dobra berba in Croatian) was established in 2013 by Saša Štula who has always been driven by enthusiasm and desire to offer something new and different to the market. I knew he was the right guy to teach me all about fermentation of wine.
➡️ Besides making quality wines in Croatia, His first breakthrough product was a winter cooked wine presented at Advent in Zagreb where it was recognized as an innovative and high quality product. Through the years this product has become a staple for all winter events all across Croatian cities and even now to surrounding countries.
➡️ In 2017, Šasa has his mind set on another innovative product. A sparkling wine known as Piena. Through the technological and enological guidelines, Charmat method and production from the local varieties of the region proved to be an excellent choice for this new Croatian sparkling wine. Since then, Piena became a hit as soon as it was placed on the market.

(29 Oct 1995) Serbo Croat/Eng/French Croatians have gone to the polls in parliamentary elections widely expected to strengthen the hand of incumbent President Franjo Tudjman. Tudjman fought the campaign with promises of reintegrating Eastern Slavonia, the last swathe of Croatian land held by rebel Serbs. (21 Nov 2019) Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic met Thursday to discuss Brexit issues and the upcoming UK elections in December. A report by the European Court of Auditors has fuelled debate on the conflict of interests of some of the EU's 31 agencies.
In times of austerity we ask two MEPs, Bart Staes from the Green Party and Marina Yannakoudakis from European Conservatives and Reformists, what reform should take place.
Are there any examples of conflicts of interests?
In EFSA, the agency for food safety, the chair of the management board was linked with some industries. We've also seen that some people who worked at EFSA have left EFSA and found jobs with major pharmaceutical companies.
There's also problems in the European Medicines Agency: the revolving door culture.
The former director left to take a job in the pharma industry, and then you have former pharma industries coming into the agency, so it's not clear if there is a crossover in that area.
What reform of EU agencies should take place?
I think we should tighten the rules inside this agency. That's one point. But the Court of Auditors also says the Commission must propose legislation on the conflicts of interests of all those who work in the European institutions.
We will need to shut down some of these agencies. In times of austerity we have to be
sensible where we spend money and make sure we get the value added. These agencies can actually be more carefully managed. If they were private companies they wouldn't be running that way. And a lot of them can merge together and do the same thing for less money.

Croatians have gone to the polls in parliamentary elections widely expected to strengthen the hand of incumbent President Franjo Tudjman.
Tudjman fought the campaign with promises of reintegrating Eastern Slavonia, the last swathe of Croatian land held by rebel Serbs.
U-S and U-N envoys are frantically trying to head off renewed Serb-Croat fighting in the area on the eve of Bosnian peace negotiations in the U-S.
Croatia's early parliamentary poll has all the trappings of a vigorous democratic election.
But it is widely-believed here that President Franjo Tudjman called the election a year early to capitalise on his army's recent military successes.
Tudjman himself voted on Sunday for his ruling Democratic Union party.
Even though the increasingly nationalistic leader is not running for election -- it is his party which is being voted on -- he has dominated the campaign.
A recent poll suggested 27-point-five per cent of Croatians believe they are voting for Tudjman as president.
Tudjman has not been shy of playing the nationalist card to secure his party's re-election.
He repeatedly promised to reclaim the one last remaining piece of Serb-held land -- Eastern Slavonia.
And he seemed confident that his party would win.

The leader of the biggest opposition party, Drazen Budisa, appeared equally confident when he cast his vote an hour later.
But there is little doubt here that Tudjman's party will romp to victory. The opposition has failed to present a united front -- fielding joint candidates in 28 constituencies.
And in towns like Glina in Krajina the nationalistic card is likely to win Tudjman's party votes.
The debris of fighting is still littered in the streets and many of the Croats voting here have only just reclaimed their houses from the ousted Serbs.
For the Serbs who failed to escape in August, democracy was less in evidence.
This woman was turned away from the polling station because she didn't have the correct Croatian document.
The nationalistic line appears to have played well at home. It has also over-shadowed another issue in the election.
With a two-thirds majority in parliament, Tudjman will have the power to amend the Constitution to strengthen his power.
Osijek -- a town only a few miles from Serb-held Eastern Slavonia -- is likely to be one of the first places to be affected by Tudjman's increasingly nationalistic approach.
If he stands by his pre-election word, Croatia could soon launch a fresh military offensive to retake Eastern Slavonia.
But western diplomats were playing down the significance of the election with regard to talks on Eastern Slavonia.

(21 Nov 2019) Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic met Thursday to discuss Brexit issues and the upcoming UK elections in December.
Croatia is to take European Union presidency from January 2020, following on from Finland.
During a news conference following their talks, Varadkar said if the current UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not win the election in December, Ireland would be willing to work with the newly elected leader.
"In a hypothetical scenario that a new UK government wants to talk about a customs union with the European Union or a closer alignment to the single market, you know, that's something that we've always been open to and something that we'd be very happy to talk to the UK government about."
Johnson pushed for Britain to hold the December election, which is taking place more than two years early, in hopes of winning a majority and breaking Britain's political impasse over Brexit.
Johnson says if voters give the Conservatives a majority he will “get Brexit done” by getting Parliament to ratify his Brexit divorce deal and taking the UK out of the bloc by the current Brexit deadline of January 31.
Plenkovic on Thursday expressed his concerns for the "extremely short" transition period for the new relationship between the UK and the European Union if Johnson wins and the EU withdrawal agreement gets ratified.
Varadkar also commented on migrants that were found in a sealed trailer on the deck of a ferry traveling from France to Ireland.
Ferry officials say they have notified security and immigration officials in Rosslare, the Irish port where the ship is headed.
"The initial response would, of course, be a humanitarian one to make sure that they are alive and in good health and I understand that they are," said Varadkar.
It is scheduled to arrive Thursday afternoon. The ferry left France from the port of Cherbourg.

Welcome to Pelješac Peninsula and Dubrovnik, in Dalmatia! In the third part of our Cracking Croatian Wine's Dalmatia series, we visit the old guards of Plavac Mali: Miloš Winery, Bura-Mrgudic Winery, and Kiridžija Winery, plus a strong newcomer Korta Katarina Winery. It was hard to cherry-pick the Croatian wine producers to feature in this episode, and we've selected these four because they make four distinctly different styles of Plavac Mali wines. If you would like to understand the sensory merits of Plavac Mali, these producers should not be missed.
As we travel along the Dalmatian coast, we also highlight other points of interest that you can add to your Dalmatia travel's itinerary, including the first two Croatian wine appellations, Dingač and Postup; the villages of Ston and Mali Ston, and Unesco World Heritage Site, Dubrovnik Old Town. Parts of the popular HBO series "Game of Thrones" was filmed in Dubrovnik.

Their primary vineyards are located on the southern slopes of the island Hvar, Croatia and on Makarska vineyards below Mt Biokovo, as well as the vineyard in Šibenik which is owned by their family business Vinoline.
Zlatan Otok has achieved success in various national, international competitions and exhibitions to include: Vinovita Zagreb, Split GAST, WINE Ljubljana, Zurich, Bordeaux, Decanter, Sabatine, Nürnberg, Paris, and many, many more.
➡️ More than one hundred awards, medals and recognitions have been given to this amazing winery. This is validation of their passion, hard work, and tradition of wine making on this beautiful island.

➡️ Good vintage (Dobra berba in Croatian) was established in 2013 by Saša Štula who has always been driven by enthusiasm and desire to offer something new and different to the market. I knew he was the right guy to teach me all about fermentation of wine.
➡️ Besides making quality wines in Croatia, His first breakthrough product was a winter cooked wine presented at Advent in Zagreb where it was recognized as an innovative and high quality product. Through the years this product has become a staple for all winter events all across Croatian cities and even now to surrounding countries.
➡️ In 2017, Šasa has his mind set on another innovative product. A sparkling wine known as Piena. Through the technological and enological guidelines, Charmat method and production from the local varieties of the region proved to be an excellent choice for this new Croatian sparkling wine. Since then, Piena became a hit as soon as it was placed on the market.

Croatia (i/kroʊˈeɪʃə/ kroh-AY-shə; Croatian: Hrvatska [xř̩ʋaːtskaː]), officially the Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska, listen ), is a sovereign state at the crossroads of Central Europe, Southeast Europe, and the Mediterranean. Its capital city is Zagreb, which forms one of the country's primary subdivisions, along with its twenty counties. Croatia covers 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) and has diverse, mostly continental and Mediterranean climates. Croatia's Adriatic Sea coast contains more than a thousand islands. The country's population is 4.28 million, most of whom are Croats, with the most common religious denomination being Roman Catholicism.
The Croats arrived in the area of present-day Croatia during the early part of the 7th century AD. They organised the state into two duchies by the 9th century. Tomislav became the first king by 925, elevating Croatia to the status of a kingdom. The Kingdom of Croatia retained its sovereignty for nearly two centuries, reaching its peak during the rule of Kings Peter Krešimir IV and Dmitar Zvonimir. Croatia entered a personal union with Hungary in 1102. In 1527, faced with Ottoman conquest, the Croatian Parliament elected Ferdinand I of the House of Habsburg to the Croatian throne. In 1918, after World War I, Croatia was included in the unrecognised State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs which seceded from Austria-Hungary and merged into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. A fascist Croatian puppet state existed during World War II. After the war, Croatia became a founding member and a federal constituent of Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a constitutionally socialist state. In June 1991, Croatia declared independence, which came into effect on 8 October of the same year. The Croatian War of Independence was fought successfully during the four years following the declaration.

A report by the European Court of Auditors has fuelled debate on the conflict of interests of some of the EU's 31 agencies.
In times of austerity we ask two MEPs, Bart Staes from the Green Party and Marina Yannakoudakis from European Conservatives and Reformists, what reform should take place.
Are there any examples of conflicts of interests?
In EFSA, the agency for food safety, the chair of the management board was linked with some industries. We've also seen that some people who worked at EFSA have left EFSA and found jobs with major pharmaceutical companies.
There's also problems in the European Medicines Agency: the revolving door culture.
The former director left to take a job in the pharma industry, and then you have former pharma industries coming into the agency, so it's not clear if there is a crossover in that area.
What reform of EU agencies should take place?
I think we should tighten the rules inside this agency. That's one point. But the Court of Auditors also says the Commission must propose legislation on the conflicts of interests of all those who work in the European institutions.
We will need to shut down some of these agencies. In times of austerity we have to be
sensible where we spend money and make sure we get the value added. These agencies can actually be more carefully managed. If they were private companies they wouldn't be running that way. And a lot of them can merge together and do the same thing for less money.

Croatians have gone to the polls in parliamentary elections widely expected to strengthen the hand of incumbent President Franjo Tudjman.
Tudjman fought the campaign with promises of reintegrating Eastern Slavonia, the last swathe of Croatian land held by rebel Serbs.
U-S and U-N envoys are frantically trying to head off renewed Serb-Croat fighting in the area on the eve of Bosnian peace negotiations in the U-S.
Croatia's early parliamentary poll has all the trappings of a vigorous democratic election.
But it is widely-believed here that President Franjo Tudjman called the election a year early to capitalise on his army's recent military successes.
Tudjman himself voted on Sunday for his ruling Democratic Union party.
Even though the increasingly nationalistic leader is not running for election -- it is his party which is being voted on -- he has dominated the campaign.
A recent poll suggested 27-point-five per cent of Croatians believe they are voting for Tudjman as president.
Tudjman has not been shy of playing the nationalist card to secure his party's re-election.
He repeatedly promised to reclaim the one last remaining piece of Serb-held land -- Eastern Slavonia.
And he seemed confident that his party would win.

The leader of the biggest opposition party, Drazen Budisa, appeared equally confident when he cast his vote an hour later.
But there is little doubt here that Tudjman's party will romp to victory. The opposition has failed to present a united front -- fielding joint candidates in 28 constituencies.
And in towns like Glina in Krajina the nationalistic card is likely to win Tudjman's party votes.
The debris of fighting is still littered in the streets and many of the Croats voting here have only just reclaimed their houses from the ousted Serbs.
For the Serbs who failed to escape in August, democracy was less in evidence.
This woman was turned away from the polling station because she didn't have the correct Croatian document.
The nationalistic line appears to have played well at home. It has also over-shadowed another issue in the election.
With a two-thirds majority in parliament, Tudjman will have the power to amend the Constitution to strengthen his power.
Osijek -- a town only a few miles from Serb-held Eastern Slavonia -- is likely to be one of the first places to be affected by Tudjman's increasingly nationalistic approach.
If he stands by his pre-election word, Croatia could soon launch a fresh military offensive to retake Eastern Slavonia.
But western diplomats were playing down the significance of the election with regard to talks on Eastern Slavonia.

Still, the west has already said that any military action in Eastern Slavonia could have a damaging effect on Bosnian peace talks to be held in America next week.

(21 Nov 2019) Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic met Thursday to discuss Brexit issues and the upcoming UK elections in December.
Croatia is to take European Union presidency from January 2020, following on from Finland.
During a news conference following their talks, Varadkar said if the current UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson did not win the election in December, Ireland would be willing to work with the newly elected leader.
"In a hypothetical scenario that a new UK government wants to talk about a customs union with the European Union or a closer alignment to the single market, you know, that's something that we've always been open to and something that we'd be very happy to talk to the UK government about."
Johnson pushed for Britain to hold the December election, which is taking place more than two years early, in hopes of winning a majority and breaking Britain's political impasse over Brexit.
Johnson says if voters give the Conservatives a majority he will “get Brexit done” by getting Parliament to ratify his Brexit divorce deal and taking the UK out of the bloc by the current Brexit deadline of January 31.
Plenkovic on Thursday expressed his concerns for the "extremely short" transition period for the new relationship between the UK and the European Union if Johnson wins and the EU withdrawal agreement gets ratified.
Varadkar also commented on migrants that were found in a sealed trailer on the deck of a ferry traveling from France to Ireland.
Ferry officials say they have notified security and immigration officials in Rosslare, the Irish port where the ship is headed.
"The initial response would, of course, be a humanitarian one to make sure that they are alive and in good health and I understand that they are," said Varadkar.
It is scheduled to arrive Thursday afternoon. The ferry left France from the port of Cherbourg.
