Abstract
Entity Linking or Entity Disambiguation refers to the task of aligning unstructured text to collections of linked data. Given a text that mentions an entity, the task is to establish a link between any substring that refers to an entity to the entity's entry in the knowledge base. For instance, in a text about the American University of Beirut, we want to identify all of the substrings that refer to AUB and annotate them with links into the knowledge base. In this talk we use Wikipedia as our example knowledge base, but approaches are directly applicable to any other collection of Linked Data.
A solution for Entity Linking is the key to extract more knowledge, such as facts and relations from text; Entity Linking provides the means to improve text retrieval (IR) and linked data retrieval.
In this talk I am going to cover several approaches to Entity Linking from simple to complex and discuss advantages and shortcomings. Different approaches will make use of natural language processing, information retrieval, machine learning and graphical probabilistic models.
Bio
Dr. Laura Dietz is a post-doctoral researcher working with Bruce Croft at the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at the University of Massachusetts. Before that she was working with Andrew McCallum at University of Massachusetts. She obtained her doctoral degree with a thesis on topic models for networked data from Max Planck Institute for Informatik in early 2011, being supervised by Tobias Scheffer and Gerhard Weikum.

Abstract:
Named Entity Disambiguation (NED) is the task of mapping textual mentions to entities in a database. A key challenge in NED is generalizing to rarely seen entities, termed tail entities. Traditional NED systems use hand-tuned features to improve tail generalization, but these features make the system challenging to deploy and maintain. In 2018, a subset of the authors built and deployed a self-supervised NED system at a major technology company, which improved performance over its hand-tuned predecessor. Motivated to understand the core reasons for this improvement, we introduce Bootleg, a clean-slate, open-source, self-supervised NED system. In this talk, we'll show how to succeed on the tail by reasoning over structured data. We demonstrate that Bootleg matches or exceeds state-of-the-art performance on three NED benchmarks and that the learned representations from Bootleg demonstrate up to 8% performance lift in a production task. Finally, we observe that embeddings from self-supervised models like Bootleg are increasingly being served to downstream applications, creating an embedding ecosystem. We initiate the study of the data management challenges associated with this ecosystem.

Ireland (
i/ˈaɪərlənd/; Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə]; Ulster-Scots: Airlann [ˈɑːrlən]) is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest on Earth.
Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (officially named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and located in the northeast of the island. In 2011 the population of Ireland was about 6.4 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.

Plot: The story of a pious introvert whose religious conviction begins to crumble under the weight of a cruel and strange existence, Buddy Boy is a study of faith, obsession, alienation and madness. The film's title character, Francis, lives with his invalid, abusive mother in a dingy tenement apartment, and has suffered a life of unrelenting misfortune and brutality. Over time, he has withdrawn from the world and into himself, silently observing others rather than interacting with them. His only solace has been his Catholicism, but he has begun to question his faith in a loving God who could countenance so much evil and pain. When he discovers he can see into the apartment of a beautiful, mysterious woman from his own back stairs, Francis cannot stop watching her, even after he meets her and they become romantically involved. Unable or unwilling to believe that she could actually love him, he becomes ever more obsessive in his voyeurism. And it is what Francis sees - or thinks he sees - that leads ultimately to his undoing.

Given a text that mentions an entity, the task is to establish a link between any substring that refers to an entity to the entity's entry in the knowledge base. For instance, in a text about the American University of Beirut, we want to identify all of the substrings that refer to AUB and annotate them with links into the knowledge base. Gwent Valleys No matter which metric you choose to measure Gwent Valleys scores poorly. Crime? Check. Poor healthcare? Check. A-hole teenagers all around? Oh yeah. In a country that’s filled with coastline and rolling hills, Gwent Valleys has none of that. It’s just the worst. At Number 3. High Wycombe Petty crime and drug use are present; as is a low employment rate. The little money High Wycombe does have it spends on the schools which is great. Its arrival will bring winds of up to 70mph in exposed coastal locations and further downpours. There was flooding around the country on Christmas Day, with 1,300 residents living in parts of Bedfordshire urged to leave their homes. One woman described how she had only an hour to move her father's belongings before floodwater from the River Great Ouse, which had burst its banks, started 'coming through the walls'. An amber wind warning, which warns travel could be disrupted, has been issued for parts of south Wales and across southern England on Saturday. Meanwhile, a yellow warning of wind for the whole of England and Wales as well as the far south of Scotland has also been issued and will be in force from 3pm on Boxing Day. Further rain is expected on Sunday and Monday and the area is one of three under a severe flood warning, meaning a danger to life, along with the Cogenhoe Mill caravan site and Billing Aquadrome Holiday Park, both on the River Nene in Northamptonshire. Bella follows relatively calm and cold conditions across the UK on Friday, which saw early morning snowfall recorded in some areas. Meanwhile, a yellow warning of wind for the whole of England and Wales as well as the far south of Scotland has also been issued and will be in force from 3pm on Boxing Day. In addition to the strong winds, the Met Office said a period of heavy rain will affect western and southern areas on Boxing Day. A yellow warning for rain has been issued for parts of Scotland, Wales and much of north and south west England on Saturday, including areas where there has already been flooding from recent downpours. In Ireland, Met Eireann issued a country-wide status yellow wind and rain warning, in force until 4am on Sunday. As of 5am, England had 78 flood warnings and 99 flood alerts, two flood warnings and five flood alerts are in force in Wales, and seven warnings and 13 alerts have been issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Bedfordshire Police on Friday 'strongly urged' residents living near the River Great Ouse to seek alternative accommodation as high levels of floodwater passed through Kempston and Bedford. Nine people and three dogs had to be rescued from a flood-hit property in Harrold, Bedfordshire. Emergency centres were set up at the Bedfordshire Athletic stadium and Bromham Village Hall. Debbie Radford, whose father lives in the village of Odell, near the river, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Saturday how she had to help him move many of his possessions from the ground floor to a higher level late on Christmas Eve. 'At about 11 O'clock he rang me and said he was in trouble. So I jumped in the car, it was just a couple of miles away and we had literally an hour to move everything off the floor so that we could save washing machines, tumble driers, fridges, carpets, furniture,' she said. 'Literally an hour later, the water started coming in through the walls. Last night it was sitting at 1ft deep throughout the whole ground floor. 'The water has risen 15ft. It is 12ft from the river level to the top of the garden, to the bank. 'The last time it flooded was 22 years ago and from all the records in Odell it has never, ever been this bad. It just came up, the water was coming up through the drains yesterday.' A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said on Christmas Day: 'Residents living near the River Great Ouse in north Bedfordshire are strongly urged to leave their homes and seek alternative accommodation due to the risk of flooding. 'People should seek alternative accommodation. This overrides the current Covid-19 regulations.' Superintendent Steve Ashdown, who is leading the response, said officers had visited just over 1,300 homes in the area the previous evening. 'A number of serious flood warnings are now in place across the north of the country where we are expecting flooding, including some for serious flooding which has the potential to endanger life. 'We contacted 1,309 properties along the river last night and suggested they evacuate, and we would strongly reiterate this advice again based on latest information.' He added: 'River levels are extremely high and we are expecting this to have a significant impact across Bedford Borough over the next 24 hours. 'The fact this is happening on Christmas Day makes the situation even worse, especially after the disruption so many of us have had to our plans already, and I really do sympathise with people. There was flooding around the country on Christmas Day, with 1,300 residents living in parts of Bedfordshire urged to leave their homes. One woman described how she had only an hour to move her father's belongings before floodwater from the River Great Ouse, which had burst its banks, started 'coming through the walls'. An amber wind warning, which warns travel could be disrupted, has been issued for parts of south Wales and across southern England on Saturday. Meanwhile, a yellow warning of wind for the whole of England and Wales as well as the far south of Scotland has also been issued and will be in force from 3pm on Boxing Day. Further rain is expected on Sunday and Monday and the area is one of three under a severe flood warning, meaning a danger to life, along with the Cogenhoe Mill caravan site and Billing Aquadrome Holiday Park, both on the River Nene in Northamptonshire. Bella follows relatively calm and cold conditions across the UK on Friday, which saw early morning snowfall recorded in some areas. Meanwhile, a yellow warning of wind for the whole of England and Wales as well as the far south of Scotland has also been issued and will be in force from 3pm on Boxing Day. In addition to the strong winds, the Met Office said a period of heavy rain will affect western and southern areas on Boxing Day. A yellow warning for rain has been issued for parts of Scotland, Wales and much of north and south west England on Saturday, including areas where there has already been flooding from recent downpours. In Ireland, Met Eireann issued a country-wide status yellow wind and rain warning, in force until 4am on Sunday. As of 5am, England had 78 flood warnings and 99 flood alerts, two flood warnings and five flood alerts are in force in Wales, and seven warnings and 13 alerts have been issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Bedfordshire Police on Friday 'strongly urged' residents living near the River Great Ouse to seek alternative accommodation as high levels of floodwater passed through Kempston and Bedford. Nine people and three dogs had to be rescued from a flood-hit property in Harrold, Bedfordshire. Emergency centres were set up at the Bedfordshire Athletic stadium and Bromham Village Hall. Debbie Radford, whose father lives in the village of Odell, near the river, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Saturday how she had to help him move many of his possessions from the ground floor to a higher level late on Christmas Eve. 'At about 11 O'clock he rang me and said he was in trouble. So I jumped in the car, it was just a couple of miles away and we had literally an hour to move everything off the floor so that we could save washing machines, tumble driers, fridges, carpets, furniture,' she said. 'Literally an hour later, the water started coming in through the walls. Last night it was sitting at 1ft deep throughout the whole ground floor. 'The water has risen 15ft. It is 12ft from the river level to the top of the garden, to the bank. 'The last time it flooded was 22 years ago and from all the records in Odell it has never, ever been this bad. It just came up, the water was coming up through the drains yesterday.' A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said on Christmas Day: 'Residents living near the River Great Ouse in north Bedfordshire are strongly urged to leave their homes and seek alternative accommodation due to the risk of flooding. 'People should seek alternative accommodation. This overrides the current Covid-19 regulations.' Superintendent Steve Ashdown, who is leading the response, said officers had visited just over 1,300 homes in the area the previous evening. 'A number of serious flood warnings are now in place across the north of the country where we are expecting flooding, including some for serious flooding which has the potential to endanger life. 'We contacted 1,309 properties along the river last night and suggested they evacuate, and we would strongly reiterate this advice again based on latest information.' He added: 'River levels are extremely high and we are expecting this to have a significant impact across Bedford Borough over the next 24 hours. 'The fact this is happening on Christmas Day makes the situation even worse, especially after the disruption so many of us have had to our plans already, and I really do sympathise with people. Abstract Entity Linking or Entity Disambiguation refers to the task of aligning unstructured text to collections of linked data. Given a text that mentions an entity, the task is to establish a link between any substring that refers to an entity to the entity's entry in the knowledge base. For instance, in a text about the American University of Beirut, we want to identify all of the substrings that refer to AUB and annotate them with links into the knowledge base. In this talk we use Wikipedia as our example knowledge base, but approaches are directly applicable to any other collection of Linked Data. A solution for Entity Linking is the key to extract more knowledge, such as facts and relations from text; Entity Linking provides the means to improve text retrieval (IR) and linked data retrieval. In this talk I am going to cover several approaches to Entity Linking from simple to complex and discuss advantages and shortcomings. Different approaches will make use of natural language processing, information retrieval, machine learning and graphical probabilistic models. Bio Dr. Laura Dietz is a post-doctoral researcher working with Bruce Croft at the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) at the University of Massachusetts. Before that she was working with Andrew McCallum at University of Massachusetts. She obtained her doctoral degree with a thesis on topic models for networked data from Max Planck Institute for Informatik in early 2011, being supervised by Tobias Scheffer and Gerhard Weikum.5:40

A key challenge in NED is generalizing to rarely seen entities, termed tail entities. Traditional NED systems use hand-tuned features to improve tail generalization, but these features make the system challenging to deploy and maintain. In 2018, a subset of the authors built and deployed a self-supervised NED system at a major technology company, which improved performance over its hand-tuned predecessor. Motivated to understand the core reasons for this improvement, we introduce Bootleg, a clean-slate, open-source, self-supervised NED system. In this talk, we'll show how to succeed on the tail by reasoning over structured data. We demonstrate that Bootleg matches or exceeds state-of-the-art performance on three NED benchmarks and that the learned representations from Bootleg demonstrate up to 8% performance lift in a production task. Finally, we observe that embeddings from self-supervised models like Bootleg are increasingly being served to downstream applications, creating an embedding ecosystem. We initiate the study of the data management challenges associated with this ecosystem.9:05

It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest on Earth.Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland (officially named Ireland), which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and located in the northeast of the island. In 2011 the population of Ireland was about 6.4 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland.
The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable climate which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the Middle Ages. As of 2013, the amount of land that is wooded in Ireland is about 11% of the total, compared with a European average of 35%. There are 26 extant mammal species native to Ireland. The Irish climate is very moderated and classified as oceanic. As a result, winters are milder than expected for such a northerly area. However, summers are cooler than those in Continental Europe. Rainfall and cloud cover are abundant.

Sandwell The available jobs in this West Midlands town are so poorly paid that the average resident has zero disposable income. The good news for locals is that Sandwell has a pretty high mortality rate, so they don’t have to suffer for very long. At Number 4. Gwent Valleys No matter which metric you choose to measure Gwent Valleys scores poorly. Crime? Check. Poor healthcare? Check. A-hole teenagers all around? Oh yeah. In a country that’s filled with coastline and rolling hills, Gwent Valleys has none of that. It’s just the worst. At Number 3. High Wycombe Petty crime and drug use are present; as is a low employment rate. The little money High Wycombe does have it spends on the schools which is great. Of course, that doesn’t do the average tourist any good. At Number 2. Southampton Southampton is simply filled with half-destroyed buildings blotting the landscape. Its arrival will bring winds of up to 70mph in exposed coastal locations and further downpours. There was flooding around the country on Christmas Day, with 1,300 residents living in parts of Bedfordshire urged to leave their homes. One woman described how she had only an hour to move her father's belongings before floodwater from the River Great Ouse, which had burst its banks, started 'coming through the walls'. An amber wind warning, which warns travel could be disrupted, has been issued for parts of south Wales and across southern England on Saturday. Meanwhile, a yellow warning of wind for the whole of England and Wales as well as the far south of Scotland has also been issued and will be in force from 3pm on Boxing Day. Further rain is expected on Sunday and Monday and the area is one of three under a severe flood warning, meaning a danger to life, along with the Cogenhoe Mill caravan site and Billing Aquadrome Holiday Park, both on the River Nene in Northamptonshire. Bella follows relatively calm and cold conditions across the UK on Friday, which saw early morning snowfall recorded in some areas. Meanwhile, a yellow warning of wind for the whole of England and Wales as well as the far south of Scotland has also been issued and will be in force from 3pm on Boxing Day. In addition to the strong winds, the Met Office said a period of heavy rain will affect western and southern areas on Boxing Day. A yellow warning for rain has been issued for parts of Scotland, Wales and much of north and south west England on Saturday, including areas where there has already been flooding from recent downpours. In Ireland, Met Eireann issued a country-wide status yellow wind and rain warning, in force until 4am on Sunday. As of 5am, England had 78 flood warnings and 99 flood alerts, two flood warnings and five flood alerts are in force in Wales, and seven warnings and 13 alerts have been issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Bedfordshire Police on Friday 'strongly urged' residents living near the River Great Ouse to seek alternative accommodation as high levels of floodwater passed through Kempston and Bedford. Nine people and three dogs had to be rescued from a flood-hit property in Harrold, Bedfordshire. Emergency centres were set up at the Bedfordshire Athletic stadium and Bromham Village Hall. Debbie Radford, whose father lives in the village of Odell, near the river, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Saturday how she had to help him move many of his possessions from the ground floor to a higher level late on Christmas Eve. 'At about 11 O'clock he rang me and said he was in trouble. 'Literally an hour later, the water started coming in through the walls. Last night it was sitting at 1ft deep throughout the whole ground floor. 'The water has risen 15ft. It is 12ft from the river level to the top of the garden, to the bank. 'The last time it flooded was 22 years ago and from all the records in Odell it has never, ever been this bad. It just came up, the water was coming up through the drains yesterday.' A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said on Christmas Day: 'Residents living near the River Great Ouse in north Bedfordshire are strongly urged to leave their homes and seek alternative accommodation due to the risk of flooding. 'People should seek alternative accommodation. This overrides the current Covid-19 regulations.' Superintendent Steve Ashdown, who is leading the response, said officers had visited just over 1,300 homes in the area the previous evening. 'A number of serious flood warnings are now in place across the north of the country where we are expecting flooding, including some for serious flooding which has the potential to endanger life. 'We contacted 1,309 properties along the river last night and suggested they evacuate, and we would strongly reiterate this advice again based on latest information.' He added: 'River levels are extremely high and we are expecting this to have a significant impact across Bedford Borough over the next 24 hours. 'The fact this is happening on Christmas Day makes the situation even worse, especially after the disruption so many of us have had to our plans already, and I really do sympathise with people.
