You can't compare rent to a mortgage payment. This way of thinking about the rent versus buy decision is extremely flawed. Comparing a mortgage payment to rent is not an apples to apples comparison. In order to properly assess the rent versus buy decision, we need to compare the total *unrecoverable costs* of renting to the total unrecoverable costs of owning.
That may sound like a complicated task, but I have boiled it down to a simple calculation.

When deciding between renting vs. buying a home, it's easy to get caught up in the countless misconceptions. For example, most people see home ownership as a requirement for building long term wealth or that renting a place to live is just throwing money away. But this is not necessarily true. These misconceptions are no doubt fanned by a hot housing market in various areas of North America.
Ben Felix from PWL Capital introduced me to a great way to finally clear up the decision between renting and buying a home: the 5% rule. In this video I'll break down what the rule is, how it works, and how to apply it to your own financial decision making.

You can't compare rent to a mortgage payment. This way of thinking about the rent versus buy decision is extremely flawed. Comparing a mortgage payment to rent is not an apples to apples comparison. In order to properly assess the rent versus buy decision, we need to compare the total *unrecoverable costs* of renting to the total unrecoverable costs of owning.
That may sound like a complicated task, but I have boiled it down to a simple calculation.

Please note that while this content is broadly applicable, it was originally intended for a Canadian audience.
You can't compare rent to a mortgage payment. This way of thinking about the rent versus buy decision is extremely flawed. Comparing a mortgage payment to rent is not an apples to apples comparison. In order to properly assess the rent versus buy decision, we need to compare the total *unrecoverable costs* of renting to the total unrecoverable costs of owning.
That may sound like a complicated task, but I have boiled it down to a simple calculation.

When deciding between renting vs. buying a home, it's easy to get caught up in the countless misconceptions. For example, most people see home ownership as a requirement for building long term wealth or that renting a place to live is just throwing money away. But this is not necessarily true. These misconceptions are no doubt fanned by a hot housing market in various areas of North America.
Ben Felix from PWL Capital introduced me to a great way to finally clear up the decision between renting and buying a home: the 5% rule. In this video I'll break down what the rule is, how it works, and how to apply it to your own financial decision making.
