Diego Garcia: The Strategic U.S Military Base in Indian Ocean
Diego Garica was discovered by Portuguese explorers in the early sixteenth century and its name is believed to have come from either an early explorer's ship captain or its navigator. Under the Treaty of Paris of 1814, many of the islands in the Indian Ocean under the control of the French were ceded to Britain, including the Mauritius and the Chagos Islands. In 1965, these islands became the British Indian Ocean Territory. During the 19th Century, the islands were used as plantations, producing copra and coconut oils. Plantations on Diego Garcia were closed in 1971, following a decision to establish the U.S. Navy Support Facility based on the 1966 Exchange of Notes between Great Britain and the United States. In January 1971, U.S. Navy Seabees were transported to the island by landing sh...

Stealing a Nation - How the UK/US Stole the Diego Garcia Island
Stealing a Nation is a 2004 Granada Television documentary written and directed by John Pilger, produced and directed by Christopher Martin and with reconstruction footage directed by Sean Crotty. The documentary is about the expulsion of Chagossians from the Chagos Archipelago, chiefly from Diego Garcia Island, forcibly removed by the British government between 1967 and 1973 to Mauritius, 1,000 miles away, so that the island could be used as an American and British airbase.

Did the UK steal the Chagos Islands? | The Stream
British Prime Minister Theresa May is defying a United Nation’s ruling that said Britain's occupation of the Chagos Islands is illegal and that it should hand over the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius. Right to Go Home - Chagos (Peros Banhos, Diego Garcia) | Olivier Bancoult | TEDxPlainesWilhems
Not known to many, beginning in 1968, the inhabitants of the Chagos Archipelago, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean, were forcibly expelled from their birthplace to make way for a military base. Olivier Bancoult, leader of the Chagos Refugee Group, speaks about the fight and struggle of his people for the right to go home.
The irony of it is that in times where people from war torn countries are looking for a safe place for their families in other countries in Europe, USA etc, these Chagossians are fighting to go back home. Louis Olivier Bancoult is a Chagossian who is the leader of the Chagos Refugee Group. He was born in 1964 on the island of Peros Banhos in the Chagos Archipelago, and works by day as an electrician, but by night for the juridical fight for the right of the Chago...

In January 1971, U.S. Navy Seabees were transported to the island by landing ship to begin building the U.S. military presence on Diego Garcia. Today Diego Garcia is home to 15 separate commands, including the U.S. Navy Support Facility, which functions as the host command.
Its position is strategically vital for the US, allowing it to project its military strength northwest into the Middle East and South Asia, east into Asia, or west into Africa. It's the most important US base in the Indian Ocean region. Diego Garcia is surrounded by about 60 other atolls. Its coast forms a deep natural harbor, making it the perfect site for a naval base. Diego Garcia has been the site of important military action by the US. On the remote tropical island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean lies a secretive, strategically vital US military base. Before that, the site had proved its strategic importance for US military operations in the Middle East as a base for Air Force attacks in 1991 during the first Gulf War. From the base, long-range B52 bombers embarked on missions to
Afghanistan in 2001, targeting Taliban and Qaeda positions in the country's mountains. The base is also vital as a refueling point for the US Navy and Air Force. Its deep port is able to accommodate aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, and other ships. With Diego Garcia accessible only to restricted US military personnel, its secrecy has attracted speculation. Unlike the US military base in Guam, the spouses of personnel are not allowed on Diego Garcia. No journalist has visited. The UN court ruled that it was illegal for the British to demand possession of the islands as a condition of independence. Shortly afterward, the British leased Diego Garcia to the US. The UN has now served an eviction notice to the British. Though the ruling is not enforceable, it exerts moral pressure and has placed the future of the base in doubt. The base has served as a launchpad for US military operations in the Middle East and as a refueling point for Air Force patrols headed to the South China Sea, and it was even designated an emergency landing spot for space missions by NASA.

The US were granted permission to use the island as a military base in 1966 in exchange for cancelling a $14 million British debt for a military hardware purchase. Diego Garcia is now home to around 4,000 military personnel and support staff in 654 buildings.
Diego Garcia is the site of an ancient volcano. However, it has now been reduced to a horseshoe-shaped coral reef, with a perimeter of approximately 40 miles and a maximum elevation of 22 feet. It stretches for 15 miles, north to south, and about 35 miles from tip to tip of its horseshoe shape.
According to the 2009 book 'Island of Shame', when the US Navy took control of Diego Garcia it forcibly removed its 2,000 inhabitants, sending them to Mauritius and the Seychelles, where they were left on the docks, with no money and no housing, to fend for themselves. Prior to their departure their pet dogs were rounded up and gassed, their bodies were burned in front of their eyes.
As well as the network of GPS satellites, there are just five ground antennas the world that assist the operation of the Global Positioning System, and one of those antennas is located on Diego Garcia.
Retired United States Army General Barry McCaffrey twice made claims that Diego Garcia is the site of a secret US prison camp. These rumours could be routed in claims of credible evidence exists supporting allegations that ships serving as black sites have used Diego Garcia as a base. However, in 2004, the British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw stated that US government had repeatedly assured him that no detainees had passed in transit or been held on Diego Garcia.
The island was a major launch pad for the US attacks on
Afghanistan and Iraq. The island is home to some of the US's most deadly planes, including B-52s, B-1Bs and B-2 bombers. In 2007, the Pentagon granted a $32 million contract to add a submarine base to the island's existing dock.
Conspiracy theorist made wild claims this year, that missing Malaysian flight MH370 was landed on the more than adequate runway of Diego Garcia. A freelance journalist claims to have received a photo via text message from an MH370 passenger calling himself Phillip Wood. Data contained with in the black iPhone photo contained GPS information which placed Wood on the island. The internet was quick to quash these claims offering the more likely explanation that the photo is a fake. The question of whether the plane was landed on the island was asked in a White House press conference, press secretary Jay Carney simply answered "I'll rule that one out."

British Prime Minister Theresa May is defying a United Nation’s ruling that said Britain's occupation of the Chagos Islands is illegal and that it should hand over the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius. May’s government calls the ruling an “advisory opinion” because it is a non-binding resolution.
During the 1960s, while decolonising Mauritius, Britain split the Chagos Islands off and held on to it. About 2,000 Chagosians were then deported from their homes on the island of Diego Garcia in the early 1970s so that the United States could build a military base. The islanders have never been allowed to return and the only people permitted on the island are military personnel and the Mauritian and Filipino workers who cook and clean for them.
The military facility is a linchpin of the US Defense Department’s strategy in the region. It is its largest installation outside of the US and has been used to launch military attacks in Somalia, Iraq and Syria.
Authorities in Mauritius have said that the US base can remain whether the island is under the political control of the United Kingdom or not. So what next? Britain has extended the US lease on the island until 2036, the islanders are lobbying to return and Mauritius wants the territory back. We explore with a panel of experts on this episode of The Stream.

Story
During the Second World War America made a start establishing what would later be known as the Military-Industrial Complex, an intricate relation between government legislation, weapons industry and economy. After World War II the United States gradually transformed itself into an economic super power. This development was accompanied by the creation of a global network of military bases, consisting of 716 bases in 38 countries, hosting around 250.000 US soldiers. What is the purpose of this immensive so called Standing Army? The documentary Standing Army zooms in on the how and why of this foreign military policy and shows the effects of this policy on US economy and the host nations.

The US has silently encircled the world with a web of military bases unlike any other in history. This Standing Army is present on all continents and has shaped the lives of millions of people. After all the wars the US waged semi-permanent military bases in the countries of conflict were established, but also on locations with an important strategic and tactical advantage like for example
Afghanistan and the Islands Okinawa and Diego Garcia. Most of these bases never disappeared, even decennia after the conflict was resolved or the threat of war was neutralized. The participation of the host Nations is usually secured in secret treaties. However the host population on the locations of the base usually suffers from it. Their voice is not heard. A good example are the protests in Vicenza Italy, where a local referendum about a new US military base in town was banned by the Italian government. The unofficial referendum the inhabitants organised showed that over 90% percent of the people opposed the plans. The new base, Caserma del Din was build anyway making it the second base in Vicenza besides Caserma Ederle.
Political and Historical Relevance
With the election of the first black president in the USA, Barack Obama, many people thought a lot of things would change, especially concerning the military budgets. As some of the graphics in the documentary show the military budget has only increased, despite the economic crisis. The yearly budget for military spending is now comparable to the amount reserved to tackle the negative effects of the financial crisis, while there are no actual wars fought. The Military-Industrial Complex and the US Standing Army are a big factor in this contradiction. Is the US economy so dependent on the weapons industry? Are Standing Armies a new form of Colonialism? Or is there another underlying reason for all these US military outposts around the world?

He was born in 1964 on the island of Peros Banhos in the Chagos Archipelago, and works by day as an electrician, but by night for the juridical fight for the right of the Chagossians to return from Mauritius to their original homeland. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
