A dear friend in Christ and I discuss her resistance to faith healing - a resistance that she viewed as noble but I still view as tragic.
Daiva was a native Lithuanian and died over the 2012 Christmas holidays - a few months after being diagnosed with cancer.

I believe in some ways she was already a mystic. And I believe she would have become an outright mystic if she had lived longer. But her mainline authoritarian upbringing taught her to think that only children look for miracles - and mature worship rejects the supernatural. So she had a lifetime of indoctrination to overcome - a lifetime that proved too short.
We were working on this dialogue at the time of her death. My hope was that it would end with her acceptance of my advice to pursue a healing miracle. And I believe that she was on the verge of accepting it.
In any case she is with God now - as she was indeed a genuine Christian with her own sort of integrity in Christ. And whose integrity is ever perfect?

Mark - How can a Christian justify not seeking a healing miracle during a dire health emergency?
Daiva - I don't know where to go in Lithuania for a healing miracle.
Mark - Lithuania was once world-famous for its Christian mystics, and now its mystics are all gone? That is a very sad commentary on modern times!
Daiva - In any case - why can't God cure me without a mediator?
Mark - Healers are special Christians and the service they offer in Christ is very special.
Daiva - But I'm a genuine Christian. How can a Christian be something more special than genuine?
Mark - Healers bear a special anointing, a blessing in reward for their peculiarly intense sort of devotion.
Daiva - But surely the prayers of a genuine Christian are enough. God is hearing my genuine prayer. If He wishes to heal me - then He will. And so in that sense a mystic is no closer to God than I am.
Mark - Mystics are definitely closer. And illness is an opportunity for us to honor their superior closeness. Meet a healer and become more special. : )
Daiva - But I feel that I don't need a healing experience to grow more in Christ. The experience I need instead is to deal with this illness. God is teaching me a special lesson through this illness. I'm learning now about who I really am in Him. There is more growth for me in dying than in healing.
Mark - Healing would only accelerate your spiritual growth. But still your attitude in resisting it is somewhat mystical. Maybe you are meant not to meet a mystic but to become one!
Daiva - All I know is that I didn't love life so much until I became ill. Life is precious to me now - very sacred. I have now a genuine love for life - a calm and gentle love. And I feel in this love nothing like the hysteria that's involved in faith healing.
Mark - Mysticism is centered on that feeling of an all-pervasive love that's calm and gentle. And the achievement of a humble and accepting attitude toward Life and God, a willingness to flow along in His Will, amounts to a certain initial stage of becoming a mystic, the stage of developing a heart-felt desire to surrender ones very being to Him. But the next stage is special - as it involves physical surrender.
Daiva - Death will be my physical surrender.
Mark - ... And what is death but an expansion of life?
Daiva - I agree. - There really is no death!
Mark - And mystics experience this expansion ... while still alive! They can teach you through healing to live the expanded life of Heaven right here on Earth.
Daiva - But again ... I don't know any healers and no one whom I ask knows any!
Mark - Well ... I would just have you reflect on that fact with sadness rather than relief.
Daiva - I would like to set up a little experiment: Tell a mystic that he is gravely ill and will die soon. I am sure that his mystical poise will go up in smoke!
Mark - No - because one becomes a mystic by dying. Physical surrender is very much like death. A mystic is already familiar with death in that way, as it's by this dying that he became what he is. In fact a mystic dies every day in meditation - so to remain what he is. Facing actual death wouldn't upset him at all. A mystic views his actual death as just an expansion of his life's work.
Daiva - Then mystics have courage only because they live in their own reality. But I live in this reality, and here I must accept that my illness is incurable. And so my courage in Christ is at least equal to theirs - if not superior.

John Winston Ono Lennon, MBE (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a co-founder of the band the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of popular music. With fellow member Paul McCartney, he formed a celebrated songwriting partnership.
Born and raised in Liverpool, Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze as a teenager; his first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into the Beatles in 1960. When the group disbanded in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine, and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance", "Working Class Hero", and "Imagine". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to raise his infant son Sean, but re-emerged with Ono in 1980 with the new album Double Fantasy. He was murdered three weeks after its release.

John Lennon (Royal Navy officer)
John Lennon (1768–1846), was a naval captain, born at Downpatrick, Northern Ireland in 1768. He is stated to have served as a midshipman in the British Royal Navy during the American Revolution. In 1796, when in command of the schooner Favorite of Martinique, carrying letters of marque, he was very severely wounded, and his ship was taken, after a fierce engagement of one hour and twenty minutes' duration, by a French privateer of very superior force.
In 1798 he was in command of the General Keppel, also of Martinique, which was capsized in a white squall on passage from Philadelphia, when Lennon and some of his crew were rescued by a passing schooner, after suffering great perils and hardships. Lennon performed various daring feats in the West Indies in 1806–9; but his most remarkable exploits were in the Hibernia, a Cowes-built barque, carrying six guns and about twenty-two men and boys all told, in which he traded for some years from the West India island of St. Thomas. In 1812 orders were issued that no vessels should leave the island without convoy, on account of the American privateers. The Hibernia and three other merchantmen, whose aggregate cargoes were valued at half a million sterling, had long been waiting. Unwilling to detain them further, Governor Maclean agreed to their sailing without convoy, on condition of Lennon hoisting his pennant as commodore. Although harassed by the Rossie, Commodore Joshua Barney, an American privateer of superior force, Lennon brought his vessels safe into the English Channel on 18 October 1812.

Death of John Lennon

John Lennon was an English musician who gained worldwide fame as one of the members of the Beatles, for his subsequent solo career, and for his political activism and pacifism. He was shot by Mark David Chapman in the archway of the building where he lived, The Dakota, in New York City on 8 December 1980. Lennon had just returned from Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono.
After sustaining four major gunshot wounds, Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at Roosevelt Hospital. He was 40 years old. At the hospital, it was stated that nobody could have lived for more than a few minutes after sustaining such injuries. Shortly after local news stations reported Lennon's death, crowds gathered at Roosevelt Hospital and in front of the Dakota. Lennon was cremated on December 10, 1980 at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York; the ashes were given to Ono, who chose not to hold a funeral for him. The first media report of Lennon's death to a US national audience was announced by Howard Cosell, on ABC's Monday Night Football.

Mark - How can a Christian justify not seeking a healing miracle during a dire health emergency?
Daiva - I don't know where to go in Lithuania for a healing miracle.
Mark - Lithuania was once world-famous for its Christian mystics, and now its mystics are all gone? That is a very sad commentary on modern times!
Daiva - In any case - why can't God cure me without a mediator?
Mark - Healers are special Christians and the service they offer in Christ is very special.
Daiva - But I'm a genuine Christian. How can a Christian be something more special than genuine?
Mark - Healers bear a special anointing, a blessing in reward for their peculiarly intense sort of devotion.
Daiva - But surely the prayers of a genuine Christian are enough. God is hearing my genuine prayer. If He wishes to heal me - then He will. And so in that sense a mystic is no closer to God than I am.
Mark - Mystics are definitely closer. And illness is an opportunity for us to honor their superior closeness. Meet a healer and become more special. : )
Daiva - But I feel that I don't need a healing experience to grow more in Christ. The experience I need instead is to deal with this illness. God is teaching me a special lesson through this illness. I'm learning now about who I really am in Him. There is more growth for me in dying than in healing.
Mark - Healing would only accelerate your spiritual growth. But still your attitude in resisting it is somewhat mystical. Maybe you are meant not to meet a mystic but to become one!
Daiva - All I know is that I didn't love life so much until I became ill. Life is precious to me now - very sacred. I have now a genuine love for life - a calm and gentle love. And I feel in this love nothing like the hysteria that's involved in faith healing.
Mark - Mysticism is centered on that feeling of an all-pervasive love that's calm and gentle. And the achievement of a humble and accepting attitude toward Life and God, a willingness to flow along in His Will, amounts to a certain initial stage of becoming a mystic, the stage of developing a heart-felt desire to surrender ones very being to Him. But the next stage is special - as it involves physical surrender.
Daiva - Death will be my physical surrender.
Mark - ... And what is death but an expansion of life?
Daiva - I agree. - There really is no death!
Mark - And mystics experience this expansion ... while still alive! They can teach you through healing to live the expanded life of Heaven right here on Earth.
Daiva - But again ... I don't know any healers and no one whom I ask knows any!
Mark - Well ... I would just have you reflect on that fact with sadness rather than relief.
Daiva - I would like to set up a little experiment: Tell a mystic that he is gravely ill and will die soon. I am sure that his mystical poise will go up in smoke!
Mark - No - because one becomes a mystic by dying. Physical surrender is very much like death. A mystic is already familiar with death in that way, as it's by this dying that he became what he is. In fact a mystic dies every day in meditation - so to remain what he is. Facing actual death wouldn't upset him at all. A mystic views his actual death as just an expansion of his life's work.
Daiva - Then mystics have courage only because they live in their own reality. But I live in this reality, and here I must accept that my illness is incurable. And so my courage in Christ is at least equal to theirs - if not superior.
