The Scream (Norwegian: Skrik) is the popular name given to each of four versions of a composition, created as both paintings and pastels, by the Expressionist artist Edvard Munch between 1893 and 1910. The German title Munch gave these works is Der Schrei der Natur (The Scream of Nature). The works show a figure with an agonized expression against a landscape with a tumultuous orange sky. Arthur Lubow has described The Scream as "an icon of modern art, a Mona Lisa for our time."
Edvard Munch created the four versions in various media. The National Gallery, Oslo, holds one of two painted versions (1893, shown here). The Munch Museum holds the other painted version (1910, see gallery, below) and a pastel version from 1893. These three versions have not traveled for years.
The fourth version (pastel, 1895) was sold for $119,922,600 at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art auction on 2 May 2012 to financier Leon Black, the third highest nominal price paid for a painting at auction. The painting was on display in the Museum of Modern Art in New York from October 2012 to April 2013.

The Scream is the debut studio album by English post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Recorded in one week and mixed in three during August 1978, it was released on 13 November 1978 by record label Polydor. Before the album's release, the band had developed a strong reputation as a live act, and had achieved a Top 10 UK single with "Hong Kong Garden" (which did not appear on the original album).
Upon release, The Scream was widely acclaimed by critics. It was also a commercial success, peaking at No. 12 in the UK Albums Chart. The album is regarded as a landmark of post-punk.
In late 1977 and early 1978, the band received major press coverage but were unable to secure a recording deal. A fan undertook a graffiti campaign in London, spraying the walls of the major record companies with the words "Sign the Banshees: do it now". Polydor finally signed them in June.
John McKay had become their guitarist in July 1977; music historian Clinton Heylin argued that the recruitment of McKay along with the formation of Magazine and PiL between August 1977 and May 1978 marked the "true starting-point for English post-punk". Several songs from The Scream had already been recorded on bbc radio 1 for two John Peel sessions: "Metal Postcard"; "Mirage" and "Nicotine Stain" had been premiered in November 1977 and "Overground" and "Carcass" three months later in February 1978.

The Scream is one of the most famous images in the world (as well as becoming the face of a 90s horror movie franchise). But if you see a man screaming when you look at it, you may have been looking at it all wrong. Curators at the British Museum, where a black and white lithograph of Edvard Munch's masterpiece has now been installed, say it doesn't show someone emitting a scream at all. In fact, they say actually depicts someone hearing one. The revelation comes from a small inscription by Munch on the lithograph which is missing from the better-known coloured-in version, and which references Munch's inspiration for creating it. • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on Facebook: htt...

C'mon everybody, let's do the scream
Sharon do the twist, do that fish Mary-Lou
Well Sheila do the pony and everybody scream
Peggy-Sue do the slop, Lucille do the bop
Donna-Donna do the dive, well everybody scream
It's something that has started way out in L.A.
It keeps on movin' through the U.S.A.
They do it down in Tennessee, on bandstands too
In Paris and in London and in Honolulu
Mary-Jane mashed patatoes
Now what you see is the locomotion
The hully-gully and the popeye, now everybody scream
And everybody scream
In New York City and in Boston too
Well it's the proper thing to do
In Detroit, Chicago and in Cleveland too
Well everybody's doin' it so why don't you
Pittsburg, New Orleans, Dallas, Portland
